SETUP AND CONFIGURATION
1
Physical Installation
The Epic 4 can be rack-mounted or used as a desktop router. Install
it in a stable/safe place to avoid any possible damage. Make sure
there is adequate space around the router for ventilation and proper
heat dissipation. Avoid placement in direct sunlight. Do not place heavy
articles on the router and verify the ground connection of the outlet
is functioning properly.
Desktop/Shelf Installation
For desktop/shelf installation, attach the four rubber feet to the corner
indentations on the bottom of the router, then place it on
a solid, level platform.
Rack Installation
Use the included L brackets for convenient installation in a 19-inch server or
AV rack. As shown below, use four screws to attach the L-shaped brackets on
either side of the router, and mount the router horizontally in the rack. Use
your desired hardware to ax the router supports to the rack.

Connecting Ethernet and Power
Before installing the router, test the Internet connection to verify that it
is functioning properly. Once Internet access is confirmed to be working,
follow the steps below for installation and configuration.
Connecting Ethernet
Luxul recommends Category-5, super Category-5 or Category-6 unshielded
twisted pair (CAT5/CAT5e/CAT6 UTP). To ensure best performance and
stable data transmission at 1000 Mbps, use Category-6 shielded twisted pair.
1. Connect the WAN: Connect the Internet cable from a telco/ISP
modem/router to the dedicated WAN 1 port on the router.
2. Connect the LAN: Connect a cable from the dedicated LAN 1 port on
the router to a switch, access point, or computer.
For best performance, and to maximize available ports, Luxul recommends
connecting all LAN devices to a Luxul switch, then connecting that switch
to the Epic 4 LAN port via a single Ethernet cable.
n NOTE: WAN 1 and LAN 1-4 are configured by default. The router
must be configured to provide additional WAN ports
.
n NOTE: Connect all LAN devices to a Luxul switch, then connect that
switch to the router for best results.
Connecting Power
Use the included power cable to connect the router to a surge-protected
outlet. The AC input socket and power switch are on the rear panel. The
built-in power supply supports 100~240VAC at 50/60Hz.

Overview

The Luxul Epic 4 XBR-4500 is a Multi-WAN Gigabit Router designed for robust network management and high-performance data transmission. This device serves as a central hub for network connectivity, offering advanced features for both residential and commercial environments where reliable and flexible internet access is paramount. Its primary function is to manage multiple internet connections simultaneously, providing enhanced bandwidth, failover capabilities, and load balancing to ensure continuous and optimized network performance.

One of the core usage features of the Epic 4 is its versatile installation options. It can be conveniently rack-mounted in a standard 19-inch server or AV rack using the included L brackets, allowing for a neat and organized setup in professional environments. Alternatively, it can be used as a desktop router, with rubber feet provided for stable placement on any solid, level surface. Regardless of the chosen installation method, it is crucial to ensure adequate space around the router for proper ventilation and heat dissipation, and to avoid direct sunlight exposure to maintain optimal operating conditions. The physical installation process is straightforward, involving the attachment of the L-shaped brackets to the sides of the router for rack mounting or the rubber feet to the bottom for desktop use.

Connectivity is a key aspect of the Epic 4. It features five RJ-45 Ethernet ports on the front panel. These include a single dedicated WAN port, a dedicated LAN port, and three additional ports that can be flexibly configured as either WAN or LAN ports. This multi-WAN capability allows the router to connect to up to four independent internet connections concurrently, which is ideal for scenarios requiring increased bandwidth, redundancy, or specialized routing. For optimal performance and to maximize available ports, Luxul recommends connecting all LAN devices to a Luxul switch, and then connecting that switch to the Epic 4's LAN port via a single Ethernet cable. This setup streamlines network management and ensures efficient data flow. The router supports Category-5, super Category-5, or Category-6 unshielded twisted pair (CAT5/CAT5e/CAT6 UTP) cables, with Category-6 shielded twisted pair recommended for best performance and stable data transmission at 1000 Mbps. Before final installation, it is advisable to test the internet connection to confirm its functionality.

The Epic 4 also incorporates a USB 3.0 port on the front panel, which expands its functionality beyond basic routing. Users can plug a USB flash drive or hard drive into this port and configure the built-in file/DLNA server. This feature allows the router to serve files to LAN-connected devices, transforming it into a central media or data storage hub within the network. This is particularly useful for sharing documents, photos, videos, or music across multiple devices without the need for a dedicated server.

User access and setup are designed to be intuitive. The router's default IP address is 192.168.0.1, which can be modified if necessary, though retaining it is recommended for seamless integration with other Luxul products. In cases where another device on the network shares this IP address, it will be necessary to reassign the device's IP address or remove it from the network to avoid conflicts. Connecting a client device is simple: just connect it to one of the router's LAN ports or to a switch connected to a LAN port. The built-in DHCP server automatically assigns IP addresses to client devices, eliminating the need for manual configuration. To access the router's web configuration interface, users open a web browser and enter the default IP address. The default login credentials are "admin" for both the username and password, providing immediate access to the router's settings for viewing and modification.

Maintenance features include a recessed Reset button on the front panel, which serves two critical functions. A quick press and release of the button will reboot the router, which can be useful for resolving minor connectivity issues or applying certain configuration changes. To restore the router to its factory default settings, the button must be pressed and held for 15 seconds. This action will erase all custom configurations and revert the device to its original state, which can be helpful for troubleshooting persistent problems or preparing the router for a new setup. It is important to exercise caution when using the Reset button, as holding it for too long during a reboot attempt can inadvertently trigger a factory reset, leading to the loss of all custom settings. A successful factory reset is indicated by all port LEDs flashing once, followed by the System LED beginning to flash when the unit is ready.

The front panel also features a series of LED indicators that provide visual feedback on the router's operational status. The Power LED indicates whether the router is powered on. The System LED flashes when the router is functioning, is solid when booting, and is off if not functioning correctly. The USB LED illuminates when a USB device is connected. For the WAN/LAN ports, a yellow LED indicates 1000 Mbps operation, while a yellow LED with a green LED off signifies 10/100 Mbps operation. A flashing yellow LED indicates network activity, and if both yellow and green LEDs are off, it means there is no network connection. These indicators are crucial for quickly assessing the router's status and diagnosing basic connectivity issues without needing to access the web interface.

Powering the device is straightforward, utilizing the included power cable to connect to a surge-protected outlet. The AC input socket and power switch are located on the rear panel. The built-in power supply supports a wide voltage range of 100~240VAC at 50/60Hz, making it suitable for use in various regions.

In summary, the Luxul Epic 4 XBR-4500 is a feature-rich Multi-WAN Gigabit Router designed for high-performance and reliable network operations. Its flexible installation options, multi-WAN capabilities, USB file/DLNA server, and intuitive setup process make it a versatile solution for managing complex network environments. The clear LED indicators and accessible reset functionality further enhance its usability and ease of maintenance, ensuring a robust and user-friendly experience.
