Overview

This document describes the Mainstays 5-Cup Coffee Maker, a household appliance designed for brewing coffee. The manual provides comprehensive instructions for its safe operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.

Function Description

The Mainstays 5-Cup Coffee Maker is designed to brew up to 5 cups of coffee. It operates by heating water, which then drips through ground coffee held in a filter basket, extracting the coffee's flavor into a carafe. The appliance includes a warming plate to keep the brewed coffee warm after the brewing cycle is complete.

Usage Features

Before first use, it is crucial to remove all packaging materials, labels, and stickers from the appliance. Users should check the package contents for completeness and damage. If any part is missing or damaged, the appliance should be returned to the dealer immediately. For safety, packaging materials like plastic bags, foils, and Styrofoam should be kept away from babies and children to prevent suffocation. The appliance should always be used fully assembled. When switched on for the first time, the coffee maker may produce an odor and emit smoke as residues from the manufacturing process are eliminated; this is normal and not indicative of a defect. It is recommended to operate the appliance for at least two full cycles with water only (no ground coffee) before brewing coffee for consumption.

To operate the coffee maker, first, ensure it is placed on a clean, flat, and stable surface. Open the lid and place the filter basket into the filter housing, ensuring it is correctly aligned. Insert a suitable paper filter into the filter basket, then add the desired amount of ground coffee. The general guideline is one scoop of ground coffee (approximately 5 grams) per cup, but this can be adjusted based on personal preference and the number of cups to be brewed.

Next, fill the carafe with the required amount of fresh water. The carafe has a water level indicator to help measure accurately. Pour this water from the carafe into the water tank. The water tank also has a water level indicator to ensure it is not overfilled. Close the lid securely and place the carafe onto the warming plate. It is essential to ensure the appliance is assembled correctly and completely before proceeding.

Once assembled, connect the power cord plug to a suitable wall outlet. Switch the appliance on by placing the I/O (on/off) button in the 'I' position; the button will illuminate to indicate it is on. During the brewing process, the carafe can be temporarily removed from the warming plate for a short period (less than 30 seconds) to pour coffee, thanks to the drip stop feature. However, removing the carafe for longer periods (more than 30 seconds) may cause the filter basket to overflow and lead to injuries. It is crucial never to touch the warming plate during use or remove accessories when the appliance is plugged in and switched on, as it will be hot. The appliance should never be used with the lid open.

After the brewing process is complete, the coffee will be kept warm by the warming plate until the appliance is manually switched off. To turn off the appliance, place the I/O button in the '0' position. Disconnect the appliance from the mains by unplugging it and allow it to cool down completely before cleaning or disassembling.

For optimal coffee brewing, it is recommended not to place the appliance under kitchen cabinets during operation, as rising steam can cause damage to wooden cabinetwork. Users should always use fresh water for brewing and avoid adding water immediately after brewing, as hot steam will generate.

Maintenance Features

Proper maintenance is key to ensuring many years of service from the Mainstays 5-Cup Coffee Maker. The appliance should be cleaned after every use. It contains no user-serviceable parts, and any servicing or repairs should only be performed by authorized service personnel.

Before cleaning, always disconnect the plug from the wall outlet and allow all parts of the appliance to cool down completely. The power cord with the plug and the appliance itself should never be immersed in water or any other liquid. Abrasive cleaners, steel wool, or scouring pads should not be used for cleaning. All parts should be dried thoroughly after cleaning, before using or storing the appliance, ensuring no water enters the appliance housing.

The appliance and warming plate can be cleaned with a clean, slightly damp cloth. The carafe and filter basket should be washed in hot, soapy water. Both the carafe and filter basket are dishwasher safe. To remove stains from the carafe, fill it with hot water and add baking soda or a mild cleaning agent; for stubborn stains, it can be left to soak overnight. All parts of the appliance should be cleaned after each use.

For deep cleaning and descaling, it is recommended to perform this process every 60 cycles, or more frequently if the water hardness level in your area is high. To descale, fill the water tank with a mixture of half vinegar and half water, or a descaling product. Place the carafe on the warming plate and switch the appliance on. Once the cycle is finished, switch the appliance off and discard the vinegar and water mixture from the carafe. Then, refill the water tank with fresh water and run the appliance with no ground coffee to rinse it thoroughly.

For storage, ensure the appliance is completely cool, clean, and dry. It is recommended to store the appliance in a dry place. The power cord can be stored in the designated cord storage area. The appliance should be stored on a stable shelf or in a cupboard, preferably in its original packaging. To prevent accidents, ensure that both the appliance and its power cord are beyond the reach of children or pets.
