What to do if my Mak Grills grill does not light and the display reads 'FLAME OUT, CHECK FIREPOT AND HOPPER'?
    • S
      Steven StewartAug 16, 2025
If your Mak Grills grill displays 'FLAME OUT, CHECK FIREPOT AND HOPPER', it means the hopper has run out of pellets or excessive ash in the firepot is preventing the pellets from lighting. Press any button to end the alarm. Remove all ash from the firepot, ensuring the grill is completely cold first. Unplug the grill before accessing any electrical components.

    • L
      lfosterAug 22, 2025
If the display on your Mak Grills Pellet Boss is no longer readable, it may need a contrast adjustment or the controller has failed. To adjust the contrast, turn on your grill. Press and hold the UP ARROW until you see 'MAK GRILL VER 3.44' (or higher). Press the RIGHT ARROW once, then press STAR once; the contrast number will flash. Use the UP ARROW to adjust the contrast. Press STAR to accept, then UP ARROW to return to the SETPOINT SMOKE setting. Turn off the grill, or adjust the setpoint temperature to begin cooking. If adjusting the contrast doesn't work, contact MAK GRILLS for help.

How to troubleshoot a Mak Grills ONE STAR GENERAL Grill that still does not light?
    • S
      Sierra CamposAug 28, 2025
If your Mak Grills grill still doesn't light, remove the fan panel. Unplug the IGNITER wire from the red connector on the back of the Pellet Boss and plug it back in, ensuring a secure connection. Check that pellets are entering the firepot and that the auger is turning; if not, check the white auger connection on the back of the Pellet Boss. Ensure the fan works; if not, check the fuse on the back of the Pellet Boss. Replace a blown 4-amp fuse with the backup fuse attached to the inside back cover of this manual. If the fuse blows, the fan, auger motor, or igniter has likely failed, so contact MAK GRILLS Service for assistance.

What to do if my Mak Grills pellet boss display says 'HOPPER OPEN' but the auger is not turning?
    • J
      James CollinsSep 3, 2025
If your Mak Grills Pellet Boss displays 'HOPPER OPEN' and the auger isn't turning, first ensure the pellet hopper lid is closed. If the message persists, check the magnet connection inside the hopper lid, ensuring it aligns with the magnet on the hopper body. If the issue continues, override the feature by removing the fan/access panel and disconnecting the connection to the HOPPER SWITCH on the back right side of the Pellet Boss board. This will disengage the feature. If problems persist, contact MAK Grills Service.

Why is my Mak Grills ONE STAR GENERAL Grill not generating as much smoke as before?
    • C
      Courtney PetersSep 6, 2025
If your Mak Grills grill isn't generating as much smoke as before, empty the firepot completely. Clean the louvers in the back of the grill, both inside and out, as well as the louvers going into and out of the Warmer/Smoker box. Clean the thermocouple. Finally, try using a fresh bag of barbecue pellets.

Why won't the display turn on on my Mak Grills grill?
    • G
      gravesadamSep 9, 2025
If the display on your Mak Grills grill will not turn on, it indicates a failure of the GFCI outlet or Pellet Boss controller. Ensure the unit is plugged into a working grounded 110-volt electrical outlet. Check the GFCI to see if it has tripped. If using an extension cord, unplug it and plug the grill directly into a standard electrical outlet. If you cannot plug your grill directly into an outlet, use only a 12-gauge grounded extension cord.

How to fix a Mak Grills ONE STAR GENERAL Grill that is not getting as hot as before?
    • L
      Laura McknightSep 12, 2025
If your Mak Grills grill isn't getting as hot as it used to, several factors could be the cause. First, clean the thermocouple located in the back left-hand corner of the main cooking chamber using moistened steel wool. Next, check for clogged exhaust louvers on the back wall of the cooking chamber, including those in the Warmer/Smoker box. Also, try using a fresh bag of pellets, as damp pellets can affect the grill's temperature. Finally, consider changing the brand and variety of pellets, as some, like fruitwood and alder, have lower BTU's compared to hickory, oak, and mesquite.

What should I do if the fan on my Mak Grills ONE STAR GENERAL does not run?
    • D
      Dr. Brittney WaltersSep 13, 2025
If the fan on your Mak Grills grill does not run, it could be due to obstructed fan blades, a blown fuse, or fan failure. The fan should run whenever the grill is on. If it doesn't, unplug the grill and remove the fan panel. Unplug the FAN wire into the blue receptacle, ensuring the connection is secure. Check fan blades for obstructions like pellets or rocks, and remove any debris. Check the fuse on the back of the Pellet Boss; if blown, replace it with a 4-amp fuse.

How do I fix my Mak Grills auger if it is not turning?
    • J
      Julie WolfDec 1, 2025
If the auger on your Mak Grills is not turning, it may be jammed or has failed. The auger works on a timed interval basis depending on the temperature setting on the Pellet Boss. During start-up, the auger will run for approximately three minutes. It then may shut off for a specified period of time depending on the temperature reading inside the grill, then continue to run again. First, empty the pellet hopper to check for moisture-exposed pellets, which can swell and jam the auger. Also, check for foreign objects in the hopper. If jammed, remove the auger and clean it and the auger tube. Use a shop vac to remove pellets from each end of the auger tube. Remove the fan/access panel, unplug the auger from the Pellet Boss, and remove the auger mounting screws. Remove the auger bracket screws,...
