Overview

This document provides an instruction manual for the Makita Cordless Driver Drill models 6261D, 6271D, 6281D, 6381D, and 6391D. It covers general power tool safety warnings, specific safety rules, important safety instructions for battery cartridges, functional descriptions, assembly instructions, operation procedures, maintenance guidelines, and a list of optional accessories.

Function Description

The Makita Cordless Driver Drill is designed for drilling and screw driving in wood, metal, and plastic. It is a battery-operated power tool, emphasizing portability and convenience for various tasks. The tool features a switch trigger for operation, with speed control directly linked to the pressure applied to the trigger. A reversing switch lever allows for changing the direction of rotation, enabling both clockwise and counterclockwise operation, which is crucial for driving and removing screws, as well as backing out stuck drill bits.

A key functional aspect is the adjustable fastening torque, which can be set in 17 steps using an adjusting ring. This allows users to select the appropriate torque level for different applications, preventing overtightening or damage to materials. The clutch mechanism is designed to slip at specific torque levels (from 1 to 16) but not at the drill marking, ensuring optimal performance for both screw driving and drilling. The tool also incorporates a speed change lever, offering both low and high-speed settings to adapt to various drilling and driving requirements.

The chuck jaws are designed for easy installation and removal of driver bits or drill bits. By turning the sleeve counterclockwise, the jaws open to accept the bit, and turning it clockwise tightens the bit securely in place. This quick-change mechanism enhances efficiency during operation.

Usage Features

Before using the tool, it is essential to read and understand all safety warnings and instructions. Proper handling of the battery cartridge is critical for safe operation. Users must ensure the battery cartridge is fully inserted until it locks with a click to prevent accidental dislodgement and potential injury. The tool should always be switched off before inserting or removing the battery cartridge or making any adjustments.

For screw driving operations, the adjusting ring should be set to the appropriate torque level for the specific work. The driver bit must be inserted straight into the screw head to prevent damage to both the screw and the bit. Starting the tool slowly and gradually increasing speed is recommended until the clutch cuts in. When driving wood screws, predrilling pilot holes is advised to facilitate driving and prevent wood splitting. The manual provides a chart for recommended pilot hole sizes based on the nominal diameter of the wood screw.

For drilling operations, the adjusting ring should be set to the drill marking. When drilling in wood, drills equipped with a guide screw are recommended as they aid in pulling the bit into the workpiece. For drilling in metal, an indentation should be made with a center-punch and hammer at the drilling point to prevent the bit from slipping. A cutting lubricant is generally recommended for drilling metals, with exceptions for iron and brass, which should be drilled dry.

Users should avoid excessive pressure during drilling, as this can damage the bit, decrease tool performance, and shorten its service life. Maintaining a firm grip on the tool is important, especially during hole breakthrough, where significant force can be exerted. If a bit gets stuck, the reversing switch can be used to back it out, but caution is advised to prevent abrupt kickback. Small workpieces should always be secured in a vise or similar device. If the tool is used continuously until the battery is discharged, a 15-minute rest period is recommended before using a fresh battery.

The speed change lever should always be fully set to either the "1" (low speed) or "2" (high speed) position. Operating the tool with the lever in a halfway position can damage the tool. It is also crucial not to use the speed change lever while the tool is running.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is essential to ensure the safety and reliability of the Makita Cordless Driver Drill. Before performing any inspection or maintenance, the tool must be switched off, and the battery cartridge removed.

Users should avoid using gasoline, benzine, thinner, alcohol, or similar substances for cleaning, as these can cause discoloration, deformation, or cracks. All repairs, maintenance, or adjustments should be performed by Makita Authorized Service Centers using genuine Makita replacement parts to maintain product safety and reliability.

Battery cartridge care is a significant aspect of maintenance. The battery cartridge should be charged before it is completely discharged. Users should stop operation and charge the battery when a decrease in tool power is noticed. Overcharging a fully charged battery cartridge should be avoided, as it shortens the battery's service life. The battery cartridge should be charged at room temperature (10°C - 40°C or 50°F - 104°F). If a battery cartridge is hot, it should be allowed to cool down before charging. For Nickel Metal Hydride battery cartridges, charging them if they have not been used for more than six months is recommended.

When the battery cartridge is not in use, its terminals should always be covered with a battery cover. Shorting the battery terminals with conductive materials like paper clips, coins, keys, nails, or screws should be avoided, as this can cause burns or fire. The battery cartridge should not be exposed to water or rain. Storing the tool and battery cartridge in locations where the temperature exceeds 50°C (122°F) should be avoided. The battery cartridge should never be incinerated, even if severely damaged or worn out, as it can explode in a fire. Dropping or striking the battery should also be avoided. If electrolyte from the battery accidentally gets into the eyes, immediate rinsing with clear water and medical attention are necessary to prevent loss of eyesight.
