Overview

This document provides an instruction manual for the Makita Hedge Trimmer models UH4570, UH5570, and UH6570. It includes important safety warnings, functional descriptions, usage instructions, and maintenance procedures. The device is double insulated, indicated by the symbol, and users are advised to read the entire manual before operation.

Function Description

The Makita Hedge Trimmer is designed for trimming hedges. It operates on a single-phase AC supply with the same voltage as indicated on the nameplate. The tool features a triple switching system for enhanced safety. To activate the tool, two out of three triggers (A, B, and C) must be pressed simultaneously. Releasing either of the two pressed triggers will turn the tool off. This design ensures that the tool only starts when both required switches are activated, preventing unintentional starting.

Usage Features

The hedge trimmer offers various cutting techniques for different trimming needs:

  • Straight Cut: For trimming hedges in a straight line, users should pull triggers A and B with both hands.
  • Vertical Cut: To perform a vertical cut, users should pull switch triggers B and C with both hands and move the tool in front of their body, cutting upwards.
  • Far Area Cut: When trimming hedges in hard-to-reach areas, users can pull switch triggers A and C with both hands.

For basic operation, it is recommended to tilt the blades towards the trimming direction and move the tool calmly and slowly at a speed of 3-4 seconds per meter. To achieve an even hedge top, users can tie a string at the desired hedge height and use it as a reference line for trimming. For cutting hedge sides evenly, it is helpful to cut from the bottom upwards. When trimming boxwood or rhododendron, cutting from the base towards the top helps achieve a nice appearance and a good job.

The tool can be equipped with an optional chip receiver accessory. This accessory helps collect cut-off leaves, preventing them from being scattered. The chip receiver can be installed on either side of the tool by pressing it onto the shear blades so that its slits overlap with the nuts on the shear blades. It's important to ensure the chip receiver does not contact the branch catcher at the top of the shear blades and that its hooks fit into the grooves of the shear blade unit. To remove the chip receiver, users press its lever on both sides to unlock the hooks.

When operating the hedge trimmer, it is crucial to keep the cable away from the cutting area, as it may become hidden in shrubs and accidentally cut by the blade. The tool should not be used in rain or wet conditions, as the electric motor is not waterproof. First-time users are advised to seek guidance from an experienced hedge trimmer user. The hedge trimmer should only be used by individuals in good physical condition, and never under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or medication.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is essential for the safe and efficient operation of the hedge trimmer. Before any adjustments, inspections, or maintenance, always ensure the tool is switched off and unplugged from the power source.

  • Cleaning: The tool should be cleaned by wiping off dust with a dry or soap-dipped rag. Solvents such as gasoline, benzine, thinner, or alcohol should not be used, as they can cause discoloration, deformation, or cracks.
  • Blade Maintenance: The blades should be smeared with machine oil or similar lubricants before and once per hour during operation. After use, dust should be removed from both sides of the blade with a wire brush, wiped clean with a rag, and then a low-viscosity oil (like machine oil or spray-type lubricating oil) should be applied. The blades should never be washed with water, as this can lead to rust or damage.
  • Shear Blade Removal/Installation: To remove the shear blades, the tool should be reversed, and four screws loosened. The under cover and gear housing cover are then removed. The crank should be set at the angle shown in the manual using a slotted bit screwdriver. When installing new shear blades, they should be placed on the tool so that the oval holes align with the crank, and the screw holes align with the tool, then secured with two screws. Grease provided with new shear blades should be applied to the periphery of the crank. After installation, the gear housing and under cover are reinstalled, and the tool is turned on to check for proper movement. If the shear blades do not operate properly, it indicates a poor fit between the blades and crank, and the process should be redone. When replacing shear blades, always wear gloves and ensure the blade cover is removed.
  • Storage: The blade cover should always be fitted onto the shear blades to prevent exposure. The tool should be stored in a dry room, away from water and rain, and out of reach of children. The hook hole in the blade cover allows for convenient hanging on a wall.

For all repairs, carbon brush inspection and replacement, or any other maintenance, it is recommended to use Makita Authorized Service Centers and genuine Makita replacement parts to maintain product safety and reliability.
