Overview

The Makita UH200D Cordless Hedge Trimmer is a versatile and portable tool designed for trimming hedges and, with optional accessories, can also function as a grass shear. This instruction manual provides comprehensive details on its operation, safety, and maintenance.

Function Description

The UH200D is primarily a cordless hedge trimmer, utilizing a reciprocating blade mechanism to cut through foliage. Its cordless design offers freedom of movement without the constraints of power cords. The tool is equipped with a lock-off button and switch trigger for controlled operation. An indication lamp provides feedback on battery capacity and overload status. For hedge trimming, the tool is designed to cut branches up to 10 mm in diameter.

With the addition of specific optional accessories, the UH200D can be converted into a grass shear. This involves replacing the hedge shear blades with grass shear blades and utilizing a 2-way change set, which includes a grass shear blade cover, storage case, and base frame. The base frame allows for three-stepped adjustment of shearing height (10 mm, 15 mm, 25 mm) when used as a grass shear.

  • Uncertainty (K) for vibration: 1.5 m/s²

The specifications are subject to change due to ongoing research and development. Battery cartridge specifications may also vary by country. The weight is determined according to EPTA-Procedure 01/2003.

Usage Features

  • Cordless Operation: Powered by a D.C. 10.8 V battery, offering portability and ease of use without a power cord.
  • Safety Mechanisms: Features a lock-off button to prevent unintentional starting and requires the battery cartridge to be removed before adjustments or maintenance.
  • Battery Indication Lamp: The indication lamp blinks red when battery power is low, signaling the appropriate time for replacement. It lights up red when battery power is almost depleted, causing the tool to stop immediately. It also lights up red to indicate an autostop due to overload.
  • Hedge Trimming Technique: For even hedge trimming, it is recommended to tilt the blades towards the trimming direction and move the tool calmly and slowly (3-4 seconds per meter). For cutting hedge sides evenly, it helps to cut from the bottom upwards. For hedge tops, tying a string at the desired height and trimming along it can serve as a reference line.
  • Chip Receiver (Accessory): An optional chip receiver can be attached to collect cut-off leaves, reducing cleanup time. It can be installed on either side of the tool.
  • Grass Shear Functionality (with accessories): When converted to a grass shear, the tool allows for three-stepped adjustment of shearing height (10 mm, 15 mm, 25 mm).
  • Operating Conditions: The tool should be used in good light and visibility. Users are advised to avoid operating in rain, wet/damp conditions, or under scorching sunlight. It is crucial to maintain proper footing and balance.
  • Material Limitations: Do not attempt to cut branches thicker than 10 mm with the hedge trimmer. Avoid cutting dead trees, hard objects, or trimming grass/weeds with the hedge shear blade. When using as a grass shear, avoid contact with the ground, curbs, fences, or trees to prevent blade dulling or damage.

Maintenance Features

  • Cleaning: The tool should be cleaned by wiping off dust with a dry or soap-dipped rag. Solvents like gasoline, benzine, thinner, or alcohol should not be used as they can cause discoloration, deformation, or cracks.
  • Shear Blade Maintenance:
    • Before and once per hour during operation, smear the blade with machine oil or similar low-viscosity oil.
    • After operation, remove dust from both sides of the blade with a wired brush, wipe with a rag, and apply low-viscosity oil.
    • Do not wash the blades in water to prevent rust or damage.
  • Blade Replacement: The manual provides detailed instructions for removing and installing both hedge shear blades and grass shear blades. It emphasizes wearing gloves during blade replacement to avoid direct contact with the blades and installing the blade cover before removal/installation.
  • Battery Care:
    • Charge the battery cartridge before it is completely discharged.
    • Stop operation and charge when tool power decreases.
    • Never recharge a fully charged battery cartridge to avoid shortening its service life.
    • Charge the battery at room temperature (10°C - 40°C / 50°F - 104°F).
    • Allow hot battery cartridges to cool down before charging.
    • Do not short the battery terminals, expose to water/rain, or store with other metal objects.
    • Do not disassemble or incinerate the battery cartridge.
  • Storage: Store the tool indoors in a dry, locked-up place, out of reach of children. Always fit the blade cover onto the shear blades before storage. The hook hole in the tool bottom allows for convenient hanging.
  • General Maintenance: Regularly check for loose fasteners, damaged parts, misalignment, or binding of moving parts. Any repairs or adjustments should be performed by Makita Authorized Service Centers using genuine Makita replacement parts. Keep handles dry, clean, and free from oil and grease.
