Overview

This document is an instruction manual for Makita Cordless Impact Wrenches, covering models XWT07, XWT08, XWT09, XWT07XV, XWT08XV, and XWT09XV. It provides essential information regarding the tool's function, technical specifications, usage, and maintenance.

Function Description

The Makita Cordless Impact Wrench is designed for fastening applications, specifically for bolts and nuts. It operates on a D.C. 18V battery system and utilizes an impact mechanism to deliver high torque for efficient fastening. The tool features a reversing switch to change the direction of rotation (clockwise or counterclockwise) and an impact force adjustment system, allowing users to select between hard, medium, and soft impact modes to suit different fastening requirements. Some models can also be adapted for drilling with specific drill bit/socket adapters. The tool is equipped with an electric brake for quick stopping and a front lamp for illuminating the work area. A battery protection system is integrated to prevent damage from overdischarge, overheating, and overcurrent.

  • XWT09/XWT09XV: 3.4 kg (7.6 lbs) - 3.7 kg (8.1 lbs)

The manual emphasizes that specifications and battery cartridges may differ by country and are subject to change due to ongoing research and development.

Usage Features

Battery Installation and Removal: The battery cartridge slides into the tool until it locks in place. A red indicator on the button's upper side signals if it's not fully locked. To remove, slide the button on the front of the cartridge.

Switch Action: The tool is activated by pulling the switch trigger, with speed increasing with pressure. Releasing the trigger stops the tool. The tool automatically stops after approximately 6 minutes of continuous pulling.

Reversing Switch: A lever changes the rotation direction. Depressing it from side A results in clockwise rotation, and from side B, counterclockwise. The switch should only be operated when the tool is completely stopped. When not in use, it should be set to the neutral position to prevent accidental starting.

Impact Force Adjustment: The impact force can be adjusted in three steps (hard, medium, soft) by pressing a dedicated button. This allows for precise tightening suitable for various tasks. The impact force setting can be changed for approximately one minute after releasing the switch trigger.

  • Hard mode: For tightening where force and speed are desired (2,200 min⁻¹ blows/min).
  • Medium mode: For good controlled power (2,000 min⁻¹ blows/min).
  • Soft mode: For fine adjustment with small diameter bolts (1,800 min⁻¹ blows/min).

Impact Socket Installation:

  • Without O-ring and pin (XWT07, XWT08, XWT07XV, XWT08XV): Align the socket with the square drive and push until it locks. Pull to remove.
  • With O-ring and pin (XWT07, XWT08, XWT07XV, XWT08XV): Remove the pin and O-ring, align the socket hole with the square drive hole, insert the pin, and return the O-ring to its groove.

Drill Bit/Socket Adapter Installation (XWT09, XWT09XV): For models with a hex drive shank, a specific drill bit/socket adapter (11.2 mm / 7/16") can be used. Pull the sleeve, insert the drill bit fully, and release the sleeve to secure it.

Front Lamp: The front lamp can be turned on or off by pressing a button for one second. When the lamp status is ON, pulling the switch trigger activates the lamp. It turns off approximately 10 seconds after releasing the trigger. If the tool overheats, the light flashes for one minute before turning off.

Ring (XWT09, XWT09XV): A ring is provided for hanging the tool with a hoist. Users must ensure the bracket and ring are secure and undamaged before use.

Hook: A hook can be installed on either side of the tool for temporary hanging. It is secured with two screws.

Fastening Operation: Hold the tool firmly, place the impact socket over the bolt/nut, and turn the tool on. The proper fastening torque depends on bolt type, size, and workpiece material. The manual includes charts illustrating fastening torque versus time for standard and high tensile bolts across different models. It advises performing a test operation to determine the correct fastening time and checking torque with a torque wrench after fastening. Factors affecting fastening torque include battery charge, impact socket condition (wear, size), bolt characteristics (diameter, torque coefficient, class, length), use of universal joints or extension bars, tool holding manner, and operating speed.

Battery Protection System:

  • Overloaded: If the tool is operated under heavy load, it will stop, and the lamp will flash. The tool will not start until it cools down.
  • Low battery voltage: The tool will stop when the battery capacity is too low, and the lamp will flash. The battery needs to be recharged.

Maintenance Features

General Maintenance:

  • Always ensure the tool is switched off and the battery cartridge is removed before inspection or maintenance.
  • Avoid using gasoline, benzine, thinner, alcohol, or similar substances, as they can cause discoloration, deformation, or cracks.
  • Repairs and adjustments should be performed by Makita Authorized or Factory Service Centers using genuine Makita replacement parts to maintain safety and reliability.

Battery Cartridge Care:

  • Read all instructions and cautionary markings on the battery charger, battery, and product before use.
  • Do not disassemble the battery cartridge.
  • Stop operation immediately if the operating time becomes excessively shorter, as it may lead to overheating, burns, or explosion.
  • Do not short the battery terminals by touching them with conductive materials or storing the cartridge with other metal objects.
  • Do not expose the battery cartridge to water or rain.
  • Do not store the tool and battery cartridge in locations where the temperature exceeds 50 °C (122 °F).
  • Do not incinerate the battery cartridge.
  • Avoid dropping or striking the battery.
  • Do not use a damaged battery.
  • Follow local regulations for battery disposal.

Tips for Maintaining Maximum Battery Life:

  • Charge the battery cartridge before it is completely discharged. Recharge when tool power decreases.
  • Never recharge a fully charged battery cartridge, as overcharging shortens service life.
  • Charge the battery cartridge at room temperature (10 °C - 40 °C / 50 °F - 104 °F). Allow hot battery cartridges to cool before charging.
  • Charge the battery cartridge if it will not be used for a long period (more than six months).

The manual also includes general power tool safety warnings, electrical safety guidelines, personal safety advice, and specific cordless impact wrench safety warnings, emphasizing the importance of wearing ear protectors, checking impact sockets for damage, and holding the tool firmly.
