Overview

The Panther 55-0416 is an aluminum auxiliary outboard motor bracket designed for 4-stroke motors with a maximum weight of 263 lbs and up to 35 HP. This instruction manual provides comprehensive guidelines for mounting, operating, and maintaining the bracket to ensure optimal performance and safety.

Function Description:

The primary function of the Panther 55-0416 bracket is to securely mount an auxiliary outboard motor to a boat's transom. It is designed to allow for vertical adjustment of the motor, ensuring the cavitation plate is positioned correctly relative to the water surface for efficient operation. The bracket facilitates the use of a secondary motor, which can be beneficial for trolling, as a backup, or for maneuvering in shallow waters. The design emphasizes stability and durability, crucial for supporting the weight and forces exerted by a 4-stroke outboard motor.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Model Number: 55-0416
  • Material: Aluminum
  • Motor Compatibility: Designed for 4-stroke motors
  • Maximum Horsepower (HP): Up to 35 HP
  • Maximum Motor Weight: Up to 263 lbs
  • Bracket Travel (X-value for calculation): 16 inches
  • Mounting Hole Pattern:
    • Overall height: 9.875 inches
    • Width between vertical mounting hole rows: 6.000 inches
    • Mounting holes center to center (vertical): 8.500 inches
    • Hole diameter: 0.312 inches (typical)
    • Top horizontal spacing: 10.000 inches
    • Bottom horizontal spacing: 2.000 inches
    • Vertical spacing between holes: 1.250 inches and 0.750 inches (alternating)
  • Required Cavitation Plate Position: 2 inches below the surface of the water.

Usage Features:

The manual outlines several key usage features and guidelines to ensure safe and effective operation:

  • Motor Removal for Trailering: Always remove the motor from the bracket when trailering to prevent damage to the boat, motor, or bracket.
  • Weight and HP Limits: Adhere strictly to the stated HP and weight ratings to avoid equipment failure or safety hazards.
  • Motor Clamp Verification: Before each use, verify that the motor clamps are tight to prevent the motor from dislodging.
  • Safety Cable: Always use a safety cable when operating the motor for an added layer of security.
  • Operating Speed: Operate the motor at low speed and avoid full throttle turns or sharp turns to minimize stress on the bracket and motor.
  • Optimal Performance Position: For best performance, operate the motor in the lowest possible position.
  • Raising and Tilting: Only raise and tilt the motor when it is not in use or running to prevent injury or damage.
  • No Alterations: Do not alter the motor mounting plate or bracket in any way, as this could compromise its structural integrity and safety.
  • Trim Adjustment: The bracket features a trim adjustment mechanism to ensure the engine's cavitation plate is parallel to the boat's bottom and 2 inches below the waterline. This adjustment involves removing an adjustment bolt, swiveling the bracket, and reinstalling the bolt without overtightening to allow smooth movement. For Model 55-0408SS, a specific bolt adjustment is available.
  • Mounting Process:
    • Positioning: Position the bracket on the transom (starboard or port side), ensuring it does not interfere with the existing engine or rudder.
    • Height Adjustment: The bracket's height should be set so that a yardstick, attached to the black plastic mounting board at a calculated "TOTAL distance," is flush with the bottom of the boat (for powerboats) or the waterline (for sailboats). The "TOTAL distance" is calculated by subtracting 2 inches from the distance between the outboard motor's clamp screw bracket and its cavitation plate, then adding the bracket's travel value (X=16" for 55-0416).
    • Hole Marking and Drilling: Mark four primary holes (extreme top and bottom on each side) for attachment. Alternative holes are provided for obstructions. Drill 3/8" holes at the marked locations.
    • Attachment: Attach the bracket to the transom using 5/16 stainless steel fasteners. For transoms 2 inches or less in thickness, a backing plate is required.
    • Nut Tightening: When tightening locking nuts on attachment bolts, ensure at least two threads protrude through the nut for secure locking.

Maintenance Features:

  • Greasing Pivoting Bolts: Occasional greasing of the pivoting bolts is recommended to ensure smoother operation of the bracket.
  • Safety: To avoid personal injury, users are advised not to contact moving parts and to observe all the provided guidelines.
