Make certain that
commutator
slots are
clean.
Test
armature
for
ground,
open or
shorted
circuit
with
a
growler.

brushes
and brush
springs at
each
overhaul.

Inspecl for loose
pole
shoes,
damaged
field
coil insulation,
and
worn
or
frayed
leads.
Test f.or
grounded
coils by
placing
an
ohmmeter
between the
input terminal
and
motor
housing.
Strould
a
reading be
obtained,
either
the
coil
or
the
input terminal is
grounded.
Eliminate
ground
or replace motor housing.
Test
for
open or shorted fields by
placing
on
an ohmmeter
between
starter
motor
terminal
and a brush
attached to the field.
Re-
sistance
should be
.012
ohms. If ohmmeter is
not
available,
check for
continuity.

Tighten to
40-50
inch-pounds.

Apply
a
light film
of SAE
#10
oil
to
the
end
of the shaJt
and
to the
portions
of the
sha-ft
that
contact the
bearings.

as
many
spacing washers as
re-
quired
to
obtain
an armature end-play
of
.005"-
.015".

Assemble
together before
placing
on
armature
shaft.

Tighten
to
130-150
inch-pounds.

Tighten
to 40-55
inch-pounds.
