Overview

This document describes the Master Forge Propane Patio Heater, Model #FHTS80001D. It is an outdoor infrared patio heater designed for heating outdoor spaces.

Function Description

The Master Forge Propane Patio Heater uses propane gas to produce radiant heat. It is designed for outdoor use only and should not be used in enclosed spaces like buildings, garages, campers, tents, cars, or homes due to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning and fire hazards. The heater consumes air (oxygen) during operation, so adequate fresh air ventilation is crucial. It is equipped with an igniter button for lighting the main flame and a control knob to adjust the heat level from LOW (minimum) to HIGH (maximum). The unit is designed to be used with a standard 20 lb. propane cylinder (approximately 12.2 in./31cm in diameter and 17.9 in./45.5cm high) with a vapor withdrawal supply system.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Fuel Type: Propane gas.
  • Propane Cylinder: Standard 20 lb. propane cylinder (approximately 12.2 in./31cm diameter, 17.9 in./45.5cm high) with a vapor withdrawal supply system.
  • Maximum Inlet Gas Supply Pressure: 250 psi/1750 kPa.
  • Minimum Inlet Gas Supply Pressure: 5 psi/35 kPa.
  • Manifold Pressure with Regulator: 11 inch W.C/2.74 kPa.
  • Safety Standards: Conforms to ANS Z83.26-2014 and CSA 2.37-2014 for Gas-Fired Outdoor Infrared Patio Heaters.
  • Clearances from Combustible Materials: Minimum 3 feet (0.91 m) from the sides and 3 feet (0.91 m) from the top.
  • Assembly Time: Estimated 60 minutes.
  • Tools Required for Assembly (not included): Phillips screwdriver with medium blade, Leak Detection Solution.
  • Battery: Small battery (QQ) for the igniter.

Usage Features

  • Outdoor Use Only: Strictly for outdoor use in well-ventilated spaces.
  • Ignition System: Features an igniter button for easy lighting.
  • Adjustable Heat: A control knob allows users to set the desired heat level (LOW to HIGH).
  • Propane Cylinder Storage: The cylinder housing is designed to securely hold a 20 lb. propane tank, fastened with a tank strap. The door of the cylinder housing should be positioned opposite the wheel assembly to prevent the LP tank from falling out during movement.
  • Stability: The base can be anchored to the ground with screws to protect the heater from strong winds.
  • Safety Warnings:
    • Gas Leak Detection: If gas is smelled, immediately shut off gas, extinguish open flames, and if odor persists, call the gas supplier or fire department.
    • Flammable Materials: Do not store or use gasoline or other flammable vapors/liquids near the heater.
    • Carbon Monoxide Hazard: Emphasizes that the appliance produces CO and must not be used in enclosed spaces.
    • Burn Hazard: High surface temperatures are present during operation; keep children and adults away from hot surfaces to avoid burns or clothing ignition.
    • Combustible Materials: Maintain minimum clearances from solid combustibles (3 feet from sides and top).
    • Wind Velocity: Optimal operation when wind velocity is below 10 mph.
    • Temperature Efficiency: Unit will operate at reduced efficiency below 40°F (4°C).
    • Manual Ignition: Exercise caution when manually igniting; holding the control knob for more than 10 seconds before igniting can cause a ball of flame.
    • Burner Flame Appearance: Emitter screen will be bright red. Burner flames should be blue with straight yellow tops; excessive yellow flame or thick black smoke indicates an obstruction and requires troubleshooting.
  • Shut Down Procedure: Turn cylinder valve clockwise to OFF and disconnect the regulator when not in use.

Maintenance Features

  • Regular Cleaning: Keep exterior surfaces clean with warm soapy water. Ensure the area around the burner assembly is dry. Do not submerge the control valve assembly.
  • Airflow: Keep the appliance area clear of combustible materials, gasoline, and other flammable vapors/liquids. Do not obstruct the flow of combustion and ventilation air. Keep ventilation openings of the cylinder enclosure free from debris.
  • Burner and Orifice Cleaning: Spiders and insects can nest in burner or orifices, causing dangerous blockages. Clean burner holes with a heavy-duty pipe cleaner and use compressed air to clear smaller particles.
  • Carbon Deposits: Clean dome and burner screen with warm soapy water if carbon deposits develop.
  • Corrosion Check: In salt-air environments, check frequently for corroded areas and repair promptly.
  • Appearance Maintenance: Use high-quality automobile wax on exterior surfaces (from the pole down) to maintain appearance; do not apply to the emitter screen or domes.
  • Annual Inspection: The heater should be inspected before use and annually by a qualified service person.
  • Hose Assembly Inspection: Inspect the hose assembly for excessive abrasion, cuts, or wear before each use. Leak test suspected areas and replace if leaks are found.
  • Leak Check Procedure: Perform outdoors using a solution of liquid dishwashing detergent and water. Apply to hose/regulator and regulator/cylinder connections. If bubbles appear, there is a leak. Re-tighten connections or replace defective parts as needed. A complete leak test must be performed whenever gas connections are loosened or removed.
  • Storage:
    • Between Uses: Turn control knob OFF, disconnect LP source, store upright in an area sheltered from inclement weather. Cover if desired. Wait until the heater is cool before covering.
    • Extended Inactivity/Transport: Turn control knob OFF, disconnect LP source, move to a secure, well-ventilated outdoor location. Store upright in a sheltered area. Never leave the LP cylinder exposed to direct sunlight or excessive heat. Wait until the heater is cool before covering.
  • Service: Only a qualified service person should repair gas passages and associated components. Always allow the heater to cool before attempting service.
