SUGGESTED ALARM LOCATIONS
As close to the centre of the ceiling as possible; or at least no closer than 60cm to any wall or corner. If mounting smoke alarm
on wall, always locate the top of the smoke alarm 10-30cm from the ceiling (diagram A).
As a minimum, smoke alarms should be located between sleeping areas and potential sources of re such as a kitchen,
heated garage or basement. In single storey homes with one sleeping area, an alarm should be installed in the hallway outside
the bedrooms. In single story homes with two sleeping areas, a minimum of two alarms are required. One outside each
sleeping area. In multilevel homes (includes guest, hostel etc), an alarm should be installed outside and inside each sleeping
area, in the basement and on every level of the home.
Additional smoke alarms should be installed in bedrooms in anticipation of res originating within these rooms, caused by
faulty wiring lamp, appliances, smoking or other hazards.
For best protections, smoke alarms should be installed in every room, or every level of your home.
Install smoke alarm in hallways at a distance no greater than 4 metres from the farthest wall and no greater than 8 metres from
the next alarm.
The distance from the apex of cathedral ceiling to the top of the smoke alarm should be 90cm minimum.
For mobile homes, smoke alarm must be mounted on an internal wall not external wall or ceiling as these surfaces heat up etc.
Including Smoke Alarms on a circuit with LED Lighting or fans, can cause signal interference, resulting in nuisance alarming or
beeping. A load correcting device should be installed before the rst smoke alarm on a circuit to rectify any nuisance alarms
on installs where this has occurred.
AVOID THESE LOCATIONS
DO NOT INSTALL A SMOKE ALARM:
in the kitchen or the garage as this can result in nuisance triggering.
within 1 metre of heating and cooling vents or within one metre of
return air or fresh air vents.
in areas where temperatures may fall below 0°C or rise above 40°C.
in areas where relative humidity may be outside the range of
10% - 90%, for example bathrooms.
within 1 metre of a uorescent light.
in areas where bugs or insect are present before eliminating
or minimising the problem.
in the dead air space where the wall meets the ceiling.
on the ceiling of a caravan or mobile home.
