Overview

The Matelec FSA-25000 is a 240Vac Photoelectric Smoke Alarm designed for residential use, intended to detect smoke and alert occupants to potential fire hazards. It is certified to AS3786:2014, ensuring compliance with Australian standards for smoke alarms. This device is designed for installation by a licensed electrician in accordance with Australian wiring rules.

Function Description:

The primary function of the FSA-25000 is to detect smoke and sound a loud audible alarm, accompanied by a flashing red LED, to warn occupants of a fire. It operates as a standalone unit or can be interconnected with up to 19 other FSA-25000 alarms, creating a network where all interconnected alarms sound if one detects smoke. In standby mode, a periodic flash of the red LED indicates correct operation. A green LED glows continuously when the alarm is connected to main power. The alarm also features a silence function, allowing temporary silencing for up to 8 minutes in cases of nuisance alarms caused by non-hazardous sources like cooking. During the dormant period after silencing, the red light remains on.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Main Power Source: 220-240 V AC/50 Hz
  • Secondary Power Source: DC 9V battery (recommended to be replaced every 12 months)
  • Interconnecting: Max. 20 units
  • Operating Temperature: 0 °C to 40 °C
  • Ambient Humidity: ≤ 93%
  • Alarm Volume: ≥ 85dB(A)
  • Sound Pattern: ISO8201
  • Compliance: AS3786:2014
  • Wiring: Minimum 1mm² 250V insulated wire for all wiring, including interconnecting.
  • Interconnection Distance: Maximum 150 meters between the first and last interconnected smoke alarm.
  • Power Source Compatibility: Suitable for use with non-pure sinusoidal power sources (e.g., power derived from square-wave inverters).

Usage Features:

  • Installation: Must be installed by a licensed electrician according to Australian wiring rules. Smoke alarms should be located between sleeping areas and potential fire sources. For single-story homes, at least one alarm is required in the hallway outside the sleeping area. In multi-level dwellings, alarms should be installed outside and inside each sleeping area, in the basement, and on every level. Alarms should be as close to the center of the ceiling as possible, at least 60cm from walls (or 30cm if wall-mounted). For peaked or cathedral ceilings, alarms must be at least 90cm from the apex.
  • Interconnection: Allows multiple alarms to be linked, so that if one alarm detects smoke, all interconnected alarms will sound. All interconnected alarms must be supplied from a single power circuit. The interconnect wire should not be connected to active or neutral.
  • Silence Feature: A built-in button allows temporary silencing of the alarm for up to 8 minutes if triggered by non-hazardous sources. It is crucial to identify and confirm the safety of the smoke source before using this feature.
  • Testing: Weekly testing is recommended to confirm normal operation. This is done by pressing the Test button for 3 seconds until the alarm sounds.
  • Low Battery Warning: The alarm will emit an audible beep at 30-40 second intervals when the battery is low, indicating the need for immediate replacement.
  • Power-up Sequence: Several audible beeps may sound when the unit is first powered up, which is normal operation.
  • Calibration Phase: After installing a new battery, the alarm may enter a calibration phase, indicated by a continuously flashing red LED and possible intermittent chirps, lasting up to 10 minutes. Normal operation resumes afterward.

Maintenance Features:

  • Battery Replacement: The 9V backup battery should be replaced at least every 12 months, or immediately when the low battery audible beep sounds. Recommended battery types include GOLDPEAK 1604P, 1604S, 1604G, 1604A, CR-9V; EVEREADY 1222; ENERGIZER 522; DURACELL MN 1604; and ULTRALIFE U9VL-J-PFDK CP-V9J. After replacing the battery, the alarm must be tested.
  • Troubleshooting Nuisance Alarms: If the alarm sounds for no apparent reason, check for signs of fire or smouldering material. Consider if the alarm is too close to an air vent (dust from HVAC systems can cause false alarms) or if tiny insects are present in the photoelectric chamber. A simple smoke alarm reset may resolve continuous or random alarming.
  • Warranty: The FSA-25000 smoke alarm is warranted for a period of 5 years against defects in materials or workmanship under normal use. For warranty issues, contact the place of purchase.

Avoid These Locations:

  • Kitchens or garages.
  • Areas with relative humidity outside 10%-93%, such as bathrooms.
  • Areas where the temperature falls below 0°C or exceeds 40°C.
  • Within 1m of any heating or cooling vents.
  • Bug or insect infested areas.
  • External walls of mobile homes, due to excessive heat exposure.
  • On circuits with LED lighting or fans, as this can cause signal interference and nuisance alarms. Smoke alarms should be on their own circuit.
