Overview

This document describes the Harry Potter Quidditch™ set, an electric, plug-in action set designed to bring the excitement of Quidditch™ home with high-performance motorized action for super-realistic competition.

Function Description

The Quidditch™ set allows players to recreate the magical sport of Quidditch. It features motorized player figures that zoom around a specially designed field. The objective is to score points by passing the Quaffle™ through goals and by capturing the Golden Snitch™. The set includes a Quaffle™ Counter to track points and a Bludger™ mechanism that can knock players off the field, adding an element of challenge. The game is played with hand controllers that allow players to control the speed of their figures. The set is designed for authentic game play, utilizing high-performance components.

Usage Features

Setting up the Quidditch™ set requires adult assistance and takes about 30 minutes to assemble the Quidditch™ field. It's important to take your time and be patient during assembly. The set is electric and plugs in, so it's crucial to read all safety information regarding its safe operation. A separate "QUIDDITCH™ SETUP & MATCH PLAY" instruction sheet provides detailed setup and game play instructions.

To begin a match, players first complete assembly, power connections, and battery installation. Player figures are placed into designated slots on the field, with the Harry Potter™ figure on the inside slot and the Slytherin™ opponent figure on the outside slot. Players then press their hand controllers to start their figures zooming around the field. Each time a player figure passes the Quaffle™, it automatically moves through a goal, and the Quaffle™ Counter records ten points for that house. The speed of the player figure is controlled by how much the hand controller trigger is squeezed, allowing for practice at slower speeds before engaging in full-speed play.

Players must watch out for the Bludger™! If a player figure is hit by the Bludger™ as it zooms past, it will be knocked off the field. To get back into the game, the player must replace their figure just past the Bludger™ mechanism, turn the Bludger™ mechanism OFF, replace the Bludger™ in one of its holders, and then turn the Bludger™ mechanism back ON. This serves as a time penalty.

The match concludes when one of the players captures the Golden Snitch™. The Golden Snitch™ is unpredictable, appearing at random times. Players must race to be the first to reach and capture it. If a player figure flies off the field during the match, it should simply be replaced in the same area. If a player figure detaches from its motorized base, it needs to be snapped back into place before resuming play.

After the match, player figures can be detached from their motorized bases and attached to clear display bases for display on the Quidditch™ Field.

Scoring is straightforward: after the match, players check the Quaffle™ Counter for their "Quaffle™" points and record them on the scorecard. The player who captures the Golden Snitch™ receives an additional 150 points, which are added to their Quaffle™ points. The player with the highest total points wins the match. The set includes one scorecard, but additional scorecards can be made using a pencil and paper or by photocopying the provided scorecard.

The Quidditch™ season consists of five matches, which can be played consecutively or with a running total. The included scorecard helps keep track of scores throughout the season, with the player having the highest point total at the end of the five-match season winning the house championship.

Maintenance Features

The set uses high-performance components that may require occasional maintenance for optimal performance. A separate "MAINTENANCE MANUAL" provides detailed technical information.

Cleaning Rails: Clean rails are crucial for best performance. Dirty rails can cause player figures to stop moving, though a slight push can often get them going again. After 3-4 "laps," figures usually run properly. If oxidation forms on the rails, causing figures to stop, it must be removed. Use the supplied sandpaper to GENTLY rub the rails until they are shiny. Avoid rubbing hard. After cleaning, wipe the rails with a soft, clean, lint-free cloth to remove any residue; do not use tissue or paper towels. NEVER use steel wool for cleaning, as fibers can be picked up by the motor's magnets, causing severe damage. Only very fine sandpaper should be used, and liquid cleaners should be avoided.

Cleaning Wheels: Dirty wheels can cause player figures to run poorly. To clean them, place a piece of adhesive tape sticky-side up on a hard, flat surface and roll the rear wheels across the tape until clean.

Cleaning Axle: Lint may accumulate around the axles of the motorized base, leading to poor player figure performance. Use tweezers or a toothpick to remove any lint.

Cleaning Contacts: Regularly clean the contacts of the motorized base to remove oxidation. Use a pencil eraser, as shown in the manual, to carefully scrub the contacts. Do not apply excessive pressure, as this may bend the contacts. DO NOT use steel wool. Worn-out contacts can be replaced.

Axle Alignment: The axle assembly of the motorized base may become "dislocated" due to sudden impact. To realign it, simply snap the assembly back into the motorized base.

Chassis Alignment: Occasionally check that the tires are not rubbing against the plastic housing of the motorized base. If necessary, carefully snap the motorized base back into the housing. DO NOT use any tools to snap the chassis back in place; use only your fingers.

Contact Replacement: The contacts of the motorized base are designed to last a minimum of 8-10 total hours of play with regular cleaning. Contacts may need replacement if they become overly worn, bent, or dislodged after an impact. The best way to replace contacts is one at a time, using the remaining contact assembly as a guide. To replace, hold the chassis bottom side up, securely holding the spring with your thumb and forefinger. Hook the narrow end of the new contact under the motor shaft, then hook the curved side tab of the contact over the spring to hold it in place. Snap the wide (slotted) end of the contact into place with the tab through the slot. Still holding the spring securely, turn the chassis over. You may need to press the top of the contact into place with a pencil tip. When properly installed, the contact should spring back when pushed.

Testing Power Connections: To test power connections, hold the motorized base with its metal contacts touching the rails, holding the front end down while lifting the rear end. Squeeze the hand controller; the wheels should spin. If they don't, there's a connection problem, and the track and power connections should be carefully checked.

Troubleshooting: A troubleshooting guide is provided to address common issues:

  • Player figure stops or won't run: May require rail cleaning, maintenance (wheels, axles, contacts), or checking connections.
  • Player figure runs poorly: May require rail cleaning or maintenance.
  • Player figure spins off the rails: May require rail cleaning, maintenance, or checking alignment.

Battery Safety Information: Ensure correct battery polarity. Use only recommended battery types. Do not mix old and new batteries, or alkaline, standard (carbon-zinc), and rechargeable (nickel-cadmium) batteries. Remove used-up batteries immediately and remove batteries if the vehicle will not be used for an extended period. Do not recharge non-rechargeable batteries or short-circuit terminals. Remove rechargeable batteries before recharging (if removable) and recharge them only under adult supervision. Dispose of batteries safely; do not dispose of batteries or products containing non-replaceable batteries in fire, as they may explode or leak. For best performance, use alkaline batteries. If the vehicle comes with standard (carbon-zinc) batteries for initial use, replace them with alkaline batteries when necessary. Battery life may vary by brand.

Special Note to Adults: Always unplug the set before assembling or disassembling track, and unplug the Power Pack when not in use. Regularly inspect the cord, plug, enclosure, and other parts for damage. If any damage is found, the toy must not be used with the transformer until repaired. Do not connect to more than the recommended number of power supplies. Adult supervision is recommended if the toy is operated in the presence of children under 8 years old. This toy is not intended for children under 3 years old and must only be used with the recommended transformer, which is not a toy itself.
