Do you have a question about the Maxeon SPR-X22-485-COM and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

This document provides safety and installation instructions for Maxeon Photovoltaic Panels, specifically X-Series, MAX3, and MAX6 modules. These panels are designed for generating electricity from sunlight and are UL Listed, meeting or exceeding UL 61730 and UL 61215 standards for flat-plate PV modules intended for installation on buildings or as freestanding units. The listing requires modules to be mounted with a rack or standoff structure and does not cover integration into building surfaces. The modules are not intended for use with artificially concentrated sunlight.

Function Description:

Maxeon Photovoltaic Panels convert solar energy into direct current (DC) electricity. They are designed for integration into solar energy systems, where they can be connected in series and/or parallel to achieve desired electrical outputs. Each module incorporates three bypass diodes to optimize performance. The panels are compatible with high-efficiency transformerless inverters and do not have grounding restrictions.

Important Technical Specifications:

The document lists various module models with their electrical characteristics at Standard Test Conditions (STC: 1000 W/m², 25°C cell temperature, AM 1.5 global spectrum). Key electrical specifications include:

  • Rated Power (W): Ranges from 335 W to 485 W, with a tolerance of +5/-0%.
  • Voltage at Rated Power (Vmpp): Varies by model, e.g., 57.3 V for SPR-X21-335-BLK, 78.8 V for SPR-X22-485-COM, and 44.2 V for SPR-MAX6-480-COM.
  • Current at Rated Power (Impp): Varies by model, e.g., 5.85 A for SPR-X21-335-BLK, 6.16 A for SPR-X22-485-COM, and 10.87 A for SPR-MAX6-480-COM.
  • Open Circuit Voltage (Voc): Ranges from approximately 40.7 V to 92.7 V, with a tolerance of +/-3%.
  • Short Circuit Current (Isc): Ranges from approximately 6.23 A to 13.15 A, with a tolerance of +/-3%.
  • Maximum System Voltage: 600 V, 1000 V, or 1500 V, depending on the module series.
  • Maximum Series Fuse Rating: 15A for X-Series, 20A for MAX3 and MAX6 modules.
  • Fire Rating: Type 2 per UL1703, 2013 edition.
  • Operating Temperature Range: -40°C to +85°C (-40°F to +185°F).
  • Ambient Air Temperature Range: -40°C to +40°C (-40°F to +104°F).
  • Ammonia Corrosion Resistance: IEC 62716, 6,667ppm concentration.
  • Salt Mist Corrosion Testing: IEC 61701 Severity 6.
  • Maximum Altitude: 3000 m.
  • Module Dimensions: Examples include 1046 mm [41.18in] x 1559 mm [61.38in] for Maxeon 3 96-cell panels, 1046 mm [41.18in] x 1690 mm [66.5in] for Maxeon 3 104-cell panels, 1032 mm [40.63in] x 1872 mm [73.70in] for Maxeon 6 66-cell panels, and 1039 mm [40.91in] x 2047 mm [80.59in] for Maxeon 6 72-cell panels.
  • Frame Profiles: Gen 4.0, Gen 4.2, Gen 5.0, Gen 5.2, and Gen 5.6 frame profiles are detailed, showing dimensions for side and end frames.

Usage Features:

  • Installation: Modules can be mounted at any angle from horizontal to vertical, with a minimum of 5 degrees to reduce soiling. A minimum of 1.5" clearance between module frames and the structure/ground is required for wiring and air circulation. An additional 1/4" minimum clearance is required between installed modules.
  • Mounting Methods:
    • Frame Holes: Modules can be secured using factory mounting holes with 1/4" stainless steel bolts, nuts, washers, and lock washers, tightened to a minimum torque of 10 in-lb.
    • Clamps: Modules can be mounted with clamps on the longer and/or shorter sides. Clamps must apply force collinear with the module frame wall, not just the top flange, and should not exceed 132 in-lbs (15 Nm) torque to prevent frame deformation or glass breakage. Minimum clamp width is ≥25mm for corner clamping.
    • Quarter-mount method (nuts and bolts): Used for mounting to rails on the longer side, 50mm to 400mm from the shorter edge in portrait orientation.
    • No-hole Invisimount mounting system: Used with MAX6 module series, mounting to rails using clamps on the longer side (50mm to 400mm from short edge in portrait orientation) or shorter side (50mm to 400mm from longer edge in landscape orientation). Mid-clamps and End Clamps are used, tightened to 85 in-lb (9.6 N-m). Rail splices are tightened to 40 in-lb (4.5 N-m).
  • Grounding: Module frames must be grounded per NEC and local codes, typically using lay-in lugs (e.g., Ilsco GBL-4DBT) attached to grounding holes with stainless steel hardware, torqued to 20-25 in-lb.
  • Electrical Connections: Modules are connected in series/parallel. Unconnected connectors must be protected from pollution. Maxeon recommends a minimum cable bend radius of 40 mm (1.5").
  • Serial Identification: Each module has a unique serial number (ABBCDEEEEEEE) indicating the year of manufacture (A), week of manufacture (BB), factory location (CD), and unique identification number (EEEEEEE).

Maintenance Features:

  • Annual Inspection: Trained Maxeon dealers or support personnel should annually inspect modules for safe electrical connections, sound mechanical connections, and freedom from corrosion.
  • Periodic Cleaning: Regular cleaning of module glass is recommended, especially in regions with low annual precipitation, to improve performance.
  • Cleaning Procedure: Wash glass surface with potable, non-heated water. Normal water pressure is adequate. Fingerprints, stains, or dirt can be removed with over-the-counter glass cleaners (e.g., Windex) or a 3% soap-and-water solution. For smaller systems, wet the glass with solution, let it stand for five minutes, then wipe with a soft sponge or seamless cloth in a circular motion. For larger systems, rinse with high-pressure water or a soft squeegee after applying the cleaning solution.
  • Prohibited Cleaning Materials: Do not use harsh industrial-strength cleaning materials such as scouring powder, steel wool, scrapers, blades, or other sharp instruments, as this will void the product warranty.
  • Handling Precautions: Avoid placing modules face-forward on abrasive surfaces. Protect modules from rain or liquids during storage, maintaining a dry environment between 10°C and 40°C (30-80% humidity). Handle anti-reflective coated glass with gloves to avoid fingerprints. Do not use vacuum lifting pads as they can cause permanent marks.
  • System Disconnection: Always switch off the inverter before disconnecting or reinstalling modules. Cover modules with an opaque cloth before making or breaking electrical connections.
  • Frame Integrity: The module is only certified for use when its factory frame is fully intact. Removing or altering the module frame, creating additional mounting holes, or removing stacking pins is not allowed.
