This user guide, P/N 5900383, Revision A, released in November 2023, outlines the setup, operation, maintenance, and safety precautions for the product. Manufactured in China, it is designed and engineered by BendPak Inc. in Southern California, USA.

Function Description:

The MaxJax Reclining Creeper Seat serves as a mobile and adjustable platform, allowing users to comfortably work in various positions. Its primary function is to offer a stable and ergonomic solution for tasks that require working close to the ground, such as automotive maintenance or repair. The device features a reclining backrest and an adjustable seat, enabling users to customize their working posture for optimal comfort and access. The inclusion of swivel casters ensures freedom of movement across the workspace.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Maximum Load: The creeper seat is designed to support a maximum load of 600 lbs. (272 kg). Users must not exceed this weight rating to ensure safety and prevent damage to the device.
  • Dimensions:
    • Length (backrest up): 33 in. (840 mm)
    • Length (backrest down): 45.25 in. (1,150 mm)
    • Width (frame): 17 in. (430 mm)
    • Width (overall): 20.75 in. (530 mm)

    • Backrest Height (up): 31.5 in. (800 mm)
    • Seat/Backrest Width: 14.75 in. (376 mm)
    • Ground Clearance: Approximately 3 in. (76 mm)
  • Adjustability:
    • Backrest Angle Adjustment: The backrest angle is adjustable via a gas spring mechanism, offering a range of approximately 0° to 70°.
    • Seat Angle Adjustment: The seat angle is mechanically adjustable with a lock in three positions, allowing for a range of approximately 0° to 30° (in three 10° steps, for a 30° maximum angle).
  • Casters: The creeper seat is equipped with six 360° swivel casters. These casters are 2.5 in. x 0.75 in., feature sleeve bearings, and are made of oil-resistant, non-marring rubber, ensuring smooth movement and protecting floor surfaces.
  • Materials:
    • Seat Materials: The backrest and seat are padded with Marine Vinyl, which is known for its abrasion, chemical, and oil resistance, contributing to the product's durability and ease of cleaning.
    • Frame Materials: The frame is constructed from full powder-coated and welded square steel tubing, providing robust support and corrosion resistance.
  • Weight: The total weight of the MaxJax Reclining Creeper Seat is 41.25 lbs. (19 kg).
  • Components: The device consists of a backrest (1), seat (1), spring release (1), gas spring assembly (1), and caster assemblies (6).

Usage Features:

  • Setup: The creeper seat arrives in a shipping box. Setup involves carefully cutting and removing straps and plastic securing the unit, then placing it on the floor. Users are cautioned not to damage the seat or backrest during this process.
  • Backrest Adjustment:
    • Raising: To raise the backrest, remove weight from it, then pull the backrest spring release handle. The backrest will rise, and the handle should be released when the desired angle is reached.
    • Lowering: To lower the backrest, apply weight (push) against it, then pull the backrest spring release handle. The backrest will lower, and the handle should be released at the desired angle.
  • Seat Adjustment: To raise or lower the creeper seat, remove weight from the seat, grasp the front of the seat, and simultaneously pull the seat lock release handle upwards. Push or pull the seat to one of the three lock positions, then release the handle. Pushing down on the seat verifies the lock has engaged.
  • Spring Release Control Position Change: The spring release control can be installed on either the left or right side of the creeper. The process involves removing weight from the backrest, pulling the control forward to raise the backrest, releasing the control, and then carefully detaching and reattaching the gas spring and control assembly to the opposite side of the frame. Users are instructed to test the recline function after repositioning. If the backrest does not recline, troubleshooting steps involve adjusting the lock nut and gas spring connection.
  • Mobility: Six 360° swivel casters allow for easy and unrestricted movement across smooth, unbroken surfaces. Users are warned against operating the creeper on cracked, rocky, or inconsistent flooring, as this can cause jamming or tipping.
  • Safety Precautions: The user guide emphasizes critical safety instructions, including reading the entire guide before use, inspecting for loose or damaged components, being aware of pinch and crush hazards, adhering to the maximum weight limit, replacing damaged warning labels, wearing appropriate personal protective equipment, and not operating the creeper if maintenance issues exist. It also highlights the importance of using the MaxJax only on hard, flat surfaces and sitting gently to avoid shock loads. The product is not intended as a toy or for standing on.

Maintenance Features:

  • Storage: The MaxJax Reclining Creeper Seat should always be stored in a dry, clean, and well-ventilated area.
  • Regular Inspections:
    • Monthly: Users are advised to inspect all welds and structural components for cracks or corrosion on a monthly basis, or as required.
    • Monthly: Inspect for damaged powder coat and repair to prevent rust.
    • Monthly: Inspect all fasteners to verify they are secured, tightening any loose fasteners.
  • Lubrication: Lubricate the caster bearings with a spray lubricant as required to maintain smooth operation.
  • Cleaning:
    • Vinyl surfaces should be washed frequently with soap and water, then wiped dry.
    • For more powerful cleaning, a small amount of dish soap and a soft bristle brush can be used.
    • After cleaning, rinse with water, wipe dry, and allow to air dry fully.
    • Important: Do not use bleach, vinegar, alcohol, or excessively harsh cleaners, as these can damage the vinyl.
  • End of Service Life: When the MaxJax Creeper reaches the end of its service life, it must be disposed of properly. Users are encouraged to contact local metal recyclers to determine methods for recycling and reusing materials, diverting them from landfills. The best option is to find a metal recycling center that can deconstruct the unit and recover usable components and metals, in accordance with all national, state, and local regulations.
