Overview

The Meade LX85 is a versatile astronomical telescope system designed for both visual observation and astrophotography. It features a German Equatorial Mount (GEM) that provides precise tracking of celestial objects, making it suitable for long-exposure imaging. The system is equipped with an AudioStar handbox for computerized control, offering a vast database of celestial objects and automated Go-To capabilities.

Function Description:

The Meade LX85 system serves as a platform for observing and imaging celestial objects. Its primary function is to accurately track the apparent motion of stars and other deep-sky objects across the night sky, compensating for the Earth's rotation. This tracking capability is crucial for keeping objects centered in the eyepiece during visual observation and, more importantly, for preventing star trails in long-exposure astrophotography.

The German Equatorial Mount (GEM) design allows the telescope to be aligned with the Earth's rotational axis (polar alignment), enabling it to track objects by rotating along a single axis (Right Ascension). The mount also has a Declination axis for pointing the telescope to different celestial latitudes.

The AudioStar handbox is the brain of the system, providing a user-friendly interface for controlling the telescope. It contains a database of over 30,000 celestial objects, including planets, stars, galaxies, nebulae, and star clusters. Users can select an object from the database, and the AudioStar will automatically slew the telescope to that object (Go-To function). It also assists with alignment procedures, calculates object positions, and provides information about celestial events.

The system supports various optical tube assemblies (OTAs), including both Reflector and Advanced Coma-Free (ACF) designs, allowing users to choose the best optical configuration for their specific needs. The inclusion of a dovetail mounting rail and saddle ensures easy attachment and detachment of the OTA.

Important Technical Specifications (Derived from the manual):

  • Mount Type: German Equatorial Mount (GEM)
  • Control System: AudioStar Handbox with Go-To capabilities
  • Database: Over 30,000 celestial objects (implied by AudioStar functionality)
  • Connectivity:
    • ST-4 Autoguider Port: For connecting an autoguider camera to improve tracking accuracy during astrophotography.
    • Auxiliary Port: For connecting optional accessories.
    • AudioStar Handbox Port (HBX): For connecting the AudioStar handbox.
    • Declination Cable Port (Dec): For connecting the Declination motor cable.
    • Serial Port: For connecting to a computer for software updates or control.
    • 12V DC Power Source: Required for operation.
  • Optical Tube Compatibility: Dovetail mounting rail and saddle for attaching various OTAs.
  • Balancing: Features counterweight shaft and counterweights for balancing the telescope in Right Ascension. The Declination axis also requires balancing.
  • Adjustment Knobs:
    • Altitude Adjustment Knob: For setting the mount's latitude.
    • Azimuth Adjustment Knobs: For fine-tuning the mount's orientation in azimuth.
    • Altitude Lock Knob: To secure the latitude setting.
    • R.A. Lock Lever: To engage/disengage the Right Ascension drive.
    • Declination Lock Lever: To engage/disengage the Declination drive.
    • Dovetail Attachment Knobs: To secure the optical tube to the mount.
  • Finder Scope: Included for initial target acquisition and alignment.
  • Focusing: Coarse and Fine Focus Knobs (for Reflector OTAs) or a single Focus Knob (for ACF OTAs).
  • Power: Requires a 12V DC power source.

Usage Features:

  • Easy Setup: The manual outlines a clear, step-by-step assembly process, starting from tripod setup, mount attachment, accessory tray installation, and optical tube mounting.
  • Polar Alignment: The mount is designed for polar alignment, which is critical for accurate tracking. The Altitude and Azimuth adjustment knobs facilitate precise alignment with the celestial pole. The "Rough Polar Alignment" step guides users to align the tripod assembly North.
  • Balancing: The system emphasizes the importance of balancing both the Right Ascension (RA) and Declination (Dec) axes. This ensures smooth motor operation, reduces strain on the gears, and improves tracking accuracy. Counterweights are provided for RA balancing, and the optical tube's position on the dovetail rail allows for Dec balancing.
  • AudioStar Control: The AudioStar handbox provides intuitive control over the telescope.
    • Go-To Functionality: Automatically slews the telescope to selected celestial objects.
    • Alignment Procedures: Guides the user through alignment steps (e.g., "Press 0 to Align, Mode for Menu").
    • Date, Time, and Location Input: Essential for accurate Go-To and tracking.
    • Object Database: Access to a vast catalog of celestial objects.
    • Utility Light: Built-in light for nighttime use.
    • Audio Speaker: For audible feedback or information.
  • Finder Scope Alignment: A dedicated step ensures the finder scope is aligned parallel to the main telescope, making it easier to locate objects.
  • Starting Home Position: The manual defines a specific "Home Position" for the telescope, which is the starting point for alignment procedures.
  • Cable Management: Clear instructions for connecting the AudioStar and Declination cables.
  • Interchangeable OTAs: The dovetail system allows users to easily swap between different optical tubes, adapting the telescope for various observational or imaging tasks.

Maintenance Features:

  • Regular Balancing: The manual implies that balancing should be performed regularly or whenever the optical tube configuration changes, which is a key maintenance aspect for optimal performance.
  • Software Updates: The serial port on the AudioStar suggests that firmware updates can be performed, ensuring the system remains current with the latest features and bug fixes.
  • Cleaning: While not explicitly detailed in the provided pages, the presence of a front dust cover for the optical tube indicates the importance of protecting the optics from dust and debris, implying regular cleaning practices.
  • Secure Connections: The emphasis on securing various knobs and levers (e.g., dovetail attachment knobs, lock levers) ensures the stability and longevity of the system by preventing loose components from causing damage or misalignment.
  • Power Source: The requirement for a 12V DC power source means users should ensure a stable and clean power supply to prevent electrical issues.
  • Warranty Information: The manual provides contact information for warranty claims, indicating support for potential defects or issues.
  • Safety Warning: A critical safety warning about not pointing the telescope at or near the Sun is included, highlighting a key user responsibility to prevent eye damage and potential damage to the telescope.
