If your engine is running rough, missing, or backfiring, here are some possible reasons: * The fuel filter might be clogged. Replace the filter. * The fuel could be stale or contaminated. If contaminated, drain the tank and fill it with fresh fuel. * A fuel line or fuel tank vent line may be kinked or clogged. Replace any kinked lines or blow out the lines with compressed air to remove any obstructions. * The flame arrestor could be dirty. Clean the flame arrestor. * A component of the ignition system might be faulty. Service the ignition system.

How to troubleshoot poor performance in my MerCruiser 4.3 TKS?
    • M
      Melissa MillerAug 11, 2025
If you are experiencing poor engine performance, consider the following: * The throttle may not be fully open. Inspect the throttle cable and linkages for proper operation. * The propeller may be damaged or improper. Replace the propeller. * There may be excessive bilge water. Drain the bilge and check for the cause of entry. * The boat may be overloaded, or the load improperly distributed. Reduce the load or redistribute it more evenly. * The flame arrestor could be dirty. Clean the flame arrestor. * The boat bottom may be fouled or damaged. Clean or repair as necessary. * There could be an ignition problem. Refer to the Engine Runs Rough, Misses or Backfires information.
