Why my Mercury Outboard Motor engine will not start?
- RRachel EverettAug 8, 2025
If your Mercury Outboard Motor engine won't start, consider these possible causes: the lanyard stop switch might not be in the RUN position; there might be an incorrect starting procedure (refer to the Operating Section); the gasoline might be old or contaminated; the engine might be flooded (refer to the Operating Section); fuel might not be reaching the engine due to an empty fuel tank, a fuel tank vent that is not open or is restricted, a disconnected or kinked fuel line, a primer bulb that has not been squeezed, a faulty primer bulb check valve, an obstructed fuel filter (refer to the Maintenance Section), a fuel pump failure, an obstructed fuel tank filter, an ignition system component failure, or spark plugs that are fouled or defective (refer to the Maintenance Section).
