Overview

The Metabo RTD 18 LTX BL 30 is a cordless lawn trimmer designed for mowing and trimming work, specifically for use with a line head. It is not intended for cutting hedges, bushes, or other vegetation where the cutting plane is not parallel to the ground. The device is powered by an 18V battery pack and features a brushless motor.

Function Description:

The lawn trimmer consists of a two-piece rod (1), a handle (2), a suspension point (3), a second handle (4), a switch lock (5), and a switch (6) for turning the device on/off and adjusting speed. It includes a battery pack release button (7) and, depending on the equipment, a capacity indicator button (8) and a battery pack (9) with a capacity and signal indicator (10). The line head (14) is protected by a safety guard (13) which also incorporates a line cutter (12) with a sharp edge for automatically trimming excess line. A plant guard (15) can be attached to protect plants from the cutting line (16).

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Voltage (U): 18 V
  • Cutting Width (B): 30 cm (11 13/16 in)
  • Max. Cutting Line Length (H): 4 m (157 1/2 in)
  • Cutting Line Diameter (HX): 2 mm (0.0625 in)
  • No-load Speed (n0): 6500 /min (rpm)
  • Weight (m): 3.8 kg (8.4 lbs) (with the smallest battery pack)
  • Vibration Emission Value (ah/Kh): 3.5 / 1.5 m/s²
  • Sound Pressure Level (LpA/KpA): 76 / 3 dB(A)
  • Acoustic Power Level (LWA/KWA): 87 / 1.7 dB(A)
  • Guaranteed Acoustic Power Level (LWA(G)): 93 dB(A)
  • Permitted Ambient Temperature (Operation): -20 °C to 50 °C (limited performance below 0 °C)
  • Permitted Ambient Temperature (Storage): 0 °C to 30 °C
  • Recommended Ambient Temperature (Charging): 0 °C to 40 °C

Usage Features:

The RTD 18 LTX BL 30 is designed for user-friendly operation.

  • Assembly: The two-piece rod (1) can be assembled by pushing the ends together until the unlock button (19) engages, then tightening the wing screw (20). For transport or storage, the rod can be disassembled by releasing the wing screw and pressing the unlock button.
  • Safety Guard: The safety guard (13) is attached to the flange (23) with screws (22) and tightened with a screwdriver (21). Protective gloves should be worn during this process due to the sharp line cutter (12).
  • Line Head: The line head (14) is fitted by locking the drive shaft (24) with an Allen key (26) inserted into the drilled hole (25), then screwing the line head onto the drive shaft counter-clockwise and tightening by hand.
  • Cutting Line Insertion: To insert the cutting line (16), hold the base body (18), turn the cap (17) clockwise until the triangular marks align, then push the straightened line end into the opening marked "LINE IN" until it emerges from the opposite side. Pull the shorter line until both ends are of equal length, then turn the cap clockwise to wind the line. Stop when 13 cm (5.1") of line protrudes from both sides.
  • Handle and Plant Guard: The handle (2) is attached to the rod (1) with screws (27) and an Allen key (26) at a comfortable position. The plant guard (15) is inserted into holes (28) on the housing and can be folded up or down as needed.
  • Battery Pack: The battery pack (9) should be charged before use and recharged when performance diminishes. The capacity indicator (10) shows the charge level when the button (8) is pressed. To insert, slide the battery pack until it engages; to remove, press the release button (7) and pull it out. Always switch off the machine and wait for the motor to stop before inserting or removing the battery pack.
  • Operation: The machine is started by firmly holding both handles, pressing and holding the switch lock (5), and then pressing the switch (6). Speed can be adjusted by varying pressure on the switch. To stop, release the switch (6) and wait for the machine to come to a complete standstill.
  • Mowing: Guide the line head (14) close to the ground, moving it evenly back and forth, and advancing slowly and carefully.
  • Line Readjustment: While the machine is running, briefly tap the line head (14) on the ground to extend the line by approximately 3 cm. Excessively long line is automatically cut by the line cutter (12). If lines break off or are too short, they must be pulled out manually after switching off the machine and removing the battery pack.
  • Safety: Always wear eye protection, ear protection, non-slip footwear, and clothing that covers the legs. Keep bystanders and pets at a safe distance (at least 15m). Do not operate the machine above waist height or on excessively steep slopes. Avoid operating in rain or wet conditions.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning: After each use, clean the machine by removing grass clippings, leaves, dirt, and other deposits. Do not use water for cleaning.
  • Storage: Clean and maintain the machine before storage. Store in a dry place, out of reach of children. The cutting line should always be kept moist to prevent breakage and wear (e.g., by storing it in a bowl of water).
  • General Maintenance: Before each use, check the machine for damaged, missing, or loose parts (screws, nuts, bolts, caps). If damage or wear is found, have it repaired by a specialist workshop. All fasteners and caps should be tightened correctly.
  • Battery Maintenance: Never service damaged battery packs. Battery maintenance should only be performed by the manufacturer or authorized service providers.
  • Cutting Line Replacement: Refer to chapter 6.4 for instructions on replacing the cutting line.
  • Lubrication: Lubrication is not required for this device.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual provides a troubleshooting guide for common issues such as a flashing capacity indicator (empty battery), excessive noise (short cutting line), all LEDs flashing (overload), machine not starting (weak battery), and heavy vibrations (uneven cutting line).
  • Environmental Protection: Observe national regulations for environmentally friendly disposal and recycling of disused machines, packaging, and accessories. Battery packs must not be disposed of with household waste; return faulty or used battery packs to a Metabo dealer. Discharge the battery pack in the power tool before disposal and protect contacts from short-circuiting.
