MAGNETIC LOCATOR
Question and Answer IconNeed help?

Do you have a question about the Metrotech 880B and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The Metrotech Model 880B Locator is a highly sensitive and discriminating instrument designed for locating buried magnetic (iron and steel) objects, while rejecting non-magnetic objects such as aluminum cans and bottle caps. Its "fine-tuned" sensitivity allows it to locate magnetic objects at greater depths.

Function Description:

The 880B provides utility companies, contractors, engineers, and surveyors with a sensitive, rugged instrument for rapid location of buried curb stops, property markers, valve boxes, manhole or vault covers, well casings, and other iron and steel objects. It also locates objects that generate their own magnetic field, such as magnetic markers. This discriminating feature simplifies the operator's search for specific magnetic targets. A sensitive, wide-range meter, combined with a frequency-modulated audio tone, enables the operator to identify subtle magnetic fields. The meter needle deflects in response to a magnetic field, with higher needle positions indicating closer proximity to an iron or iron and steel object. The speaker emits an audible tone when the 880B is near a magnetic object, and the tone frequency increases or decreases with gradient field intensity, indicating the object's closeness.

Technical Specifications:

  • Model Number: 880B
  • Description: Ferromagnetic Locator
  • Batteries: Two 9V Alkaline (Neda 1604A)
  • Battery Life: 50-60 hours, depending on temperature extremes. An automatic battery test is activated when the instrument is turned on.
  • Control: Combination On/Off and Sensitivity Knob. This knob turns the instrument on and off and adjusts its sensitivity to the magnetic field. It should be set as low as possible to avoid picking up magnetic fields from nearby objects.
  • Meter: Indicates signal level and battery condition. When the receiver is turned ON, the needle should move into the BATT test area. If it does not, the batteries need to be replaced.
  • Speaker: Approximately 20 Hz idle tone. Tone frequency increases or decreases with gradient field intensity.
  • Weight: 1 lb. 10 oz. (0.75 kg)
  • Dimensions: 43"L x 2 ½"W x 1 ½"T (109 x 6.9 x 3.8 cm)
  • Operating Temperature: 0° F to +122° F (-10° C to +50° C)
  • Storage Temperature: -4° F to +158° F (-20° C to +70° C)
  • Construction: High Impact UV Resistant Plastic.
  • Standard Equipment: 880B Ferromagnetic Locator, Carrying Case (500D109), Operation Manual (600A095-B).

Usage Features:

To operate the 880B, turn the ON/OFF/SENSITIVITY knob "ON." An automatic battery test (accompanied by a high squeal) will take place for two seconds. If the needle stays within the green area on the meter, the battery is good. After the battery test, the instrument switches to operating mode. Turn the ON/OFF/SENSITIVITY knob so that the meter reads in the “SET” position. Hold the instrument in front of you and sweep it from side to side, keeping the end of the instrument as close to the ground as possible. When the 880B approaches a ferrous target, the audible tone will increase, corresponding to the increase shown on the meter. If there is no indication of a signal, increase the sensitivity and search the area again. For the most accurate readings, it is recommended to operate the 880B within the range of 40 to 80 on the meter.

The size, shape, depth, and orientation of the target object define the “profile” or “signature” indicated on the 880B meter. Operators can develop a good sense of target depth by taking two readings from a target: one with the instrument tip at the ground surface, and one with the end of the 880B four to twelve inches above the ground. The response to a shallow target diminishes more rapidly than that of a deeper target. Once a target depth has been estimated, a rough idea of its size can be gauged by the amount of sensitivity setting needed to read "25" on the meter. Long and narrow targets provide the greatest response when the instrument is parallel to the target.

Maintenance Features:

The 880B is designed for rugged, outdoor use, but rough handling should be avoided. Keep the equipment dry, clean, and free of grit. Store the 880B in its carrying case in a cool, dry place, and do not expose it to excessive temperatures. The only maintenance requirement for the Model 880B is to monitor the battery condition and replace it when necessary.

Battery Replacement Procedure:

  1. Have two Alkaline NEDA 1604A 9V batteries ready.
  2. Unscrew the two screws on the handle end of the 880B.
  3. Carefully pull out the battery/meter housing (which will be attached to inner workings by a cable).
  4. Remove and replace both batteries.
  5. Replace the battery/meter housing and screw it into place.

If the equipment does not function properly after battery replacement, contact one of the Metrotech Customer Service departments. The unit has no other serviceable parts.
