Overview

This document describes the Michelin Compact 'Top Up' Digital Tyre Inflator, a device designed for topping up tyre pressure.

Function Description:

The Michelin Compact 'Top Up' Digital Tyre Inflator is a portable device used to add air to car and bicycle tyres. It features a digital gauge for precise pressure readings and a 5V USB port for charging mobile phones. The inflator is designed for "topping up" existing pressure rather than inflating from a completely flat tyre. It operates by connecting to a vehicle's 12V DC socket.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Max Pressure: 40 PSI for car tyres, 100 PSI for cycle tyres.
  • Pressure Accuracy: Backlit pressure gauge with +/- 1 PSI up to 50 PSI.
  • Pressure Resolution: PSI / BAR / kPa.
  • Max Current: 6.0A / 72W.
  • Fuse Size: 10A glass.
  • Hose Length: 14 cm (approx.).
  • Power Cord Length: 280 cm (approx.).
  • USB Output: 5V, maximum 0.5A.

Usage Features:

  • On/Off Button (1): Used to power the device on and off. When off, the button protrudes slightly; when on, it is flush with the unit.
  • White LCD Digital Display (2): Shows the current tyre pressure and selected pressure format.
  • High Pressure Air Hose with Tyre Valve Connector (3): A 14 cm (approx.) hose for connecting to the tyre valve.
  • 5V USB Outlet Source (4): Located under the right-hand cover, this port allows charging of mobile phones.
  • PSI, BAR & kPa Button / Reset Button (5): Used to select the desired pressure format (PSI, BAR, or kPa) and to reset the device if troubleshooting is required.
  • Input for Detachable Power Cord (6): Connects the 280 cm (approx.) power cord to the inflator.

Operating Procedure:

  1. Ensure the On/Off button (1) is in the 'Off' position.
  2. Unwind the power cord and plug the small end into the input (6) and the 12V power plug into the vehicle's 12V power plug socket.
  3. Wait a few seconds for the digital display (2) to show zero.
  4. Press the PSI, BAR & kPa button (5) to select the desired pressure format.
  5. Lift the high-pressure hose and screw the tyre valve connector (3) onto the tyre valve. Always connect the 12V power plug before connecting the high-pressure hose to the tyre.
  6. Check the tyre pressure shown on the display. If the display reads "0.00" or "Err," refer to the troubleshooting guide.
  7. Once connected correctly, the gauge will display the current tyre pressure. If this matches the vehicle's handbook, the user can simply remove the tyre valve connector (3).
  8. To start inflating, press the On/Off button (1).
  9. The pressure on the display (2) will increase. Due to the sensitive nature of the measuring system, the gauge may drop slightly when switched off at the required pressure. If this occurs, switch back on and inflate to a slightly higher pressure, then switch off and re-check.
  10. For inflating multiple tyres, repeat steps 3-4. If the 12V power supply is disconnected, always reconnect it before connecting the high-pressure hose to the tyre valve. If a power interruption occurs during inflation, follow the reset procedure in the troubleshooting guide.

Maintenance Features:

  • Fuse Replacement: The 10A glass fuse in the 12V plug can be replaced by undoing the knurled ring anti-clockwise.
  • Pre-use Inspection: Inspect the tyre inflator before each use for any damage (bent, broken, melted, burnt, wet components).
  • Cleaning: Ensure the 12V socket is clean and free of debris.
  • No User Serviceable Parts: The compressor contains no user-serviceable parts; users should not open it.

Safety Warnings and Cautions:

  • Never allow children to use this inflator.
  • Never overinflate tyres.
  • Always use in a safe area away from traffic and other dangers.
  • Only suitable for vehicles with a negative earth.
  • Designed for topping-up pressure, not inflating from flat. Do not inflate over 40 PSI (for car tyres).
  • When topping up vehicle tyres, this inflator should ONLY be used for car tyres and bicycle tyres.
  • Max power requirement during normal use: 6A / 72W.
  • Never leave unattended when running.
  • Never run for more than 8 minutes. After each 8-minute run, allow the inflator to cool down.
  • Correct tyre pressure is vital for road safety; under or overinflated tyres can be dangerous.
  • Carry out regular weekly checks of tyre pressures, including the spare (excluding space saver tyres).
  • Always check pressures before a long journey or after loading/unloading the vehicle.
  • Always check pressures in an ambient temperature, never immediately after a long journey.
  • Do not leave connected to a 12V DC socket unattended.
  • Do not kink or block the air hose while the compressor is working.
  • Do not use if any components are damaged.

Troubleshooting Guide:

  • Gauge does not illuminate / Unit fails to run: Check if the plug is fully inserted into the 12V socket, check the internal plug fuse (10A glass type), and ensure the car's ignition key is turned to the accessory position if required.
  • Power lead/plug becomes hot: Uncoil the power lead to its full length, ensure the 12V socket is clean, and ensure 12V plug components are tight.
  • Gauge appears to read incorrectly or is unreadable / Gauge reads 0.0 or ERR: When the tyre valve connector is attached, ensure the gauge is reading the current tyre pressure. Disconnect the valve connector from the tyre, remove the plug from the power source for at least 5 seconds, then reconnect. Press and hold the yellow reset button until the display shows all digits then returns to 0.0. Reconnect the valve connector to the tyre.
  • Unit is running but tyre is not inflating: Check that the tyre valve connector is correctly fitted to the tyre valve.
  • Gauge does not display when tyre valve is connected: Ensure the tyre valve is correctly connected to the tyre valve connector.
