This document is an operating and installation manual for a Miele Ventilation Hood, specifically models DAS 4720 and DAS 4920.
Function Description
The Miele Ventilation Hood is designed to extract and clean vapors produced during cooking. It can operate in two modes:
- Extraction mode: Air entering through the intake is cleaned by grease filters and conducted out of the building. This mode requires proper external venting.
- Recirculation mode: The air is drawn in and cleaned first by the grease filter and then by charcoal filters before being circulated back into the kitchen. This mode is suitable when external venting is not possible and requires optional accessories (conversion kit and charcoal filters).
The ventilation hood features a pull-out canopy, overhead lighting, and controls for various functions including:
- Switching the lighting on and off, and dimming the lighting.
- Switching the blower on and off, and setting the blower power (levels 1, 2, 3, and a Booster setting 'B').
- Setting a delayed shutdown function to continue running the blower for a set time after cooking.
- Filter saturation indicators for both grease and charcoal filters, which remind the user when cleaning or replacement is needed.
The appliance can be integrated with Miele@home for remote control and monitoring via a WiFi network and the Miele app. This allows for:
- Selecting extraction or recirculation mode.
- Switching the blower and lighting on/off.
- Monitoring filter saturation.
- Setting the delayed shutdown function.

- Multiburner Gas Cooktops (> 73,800 BTU/hr): Not possible.
Usage Features
- Turning on the fan: Switch the fan on as soon as you start cooking to capture vapors effectively. Pulling out the canopy activates the fan.
- Selecting power level: Power levels 1 to 3 are available for light to heavy cooking. The Booster setting (B) is for temporarily produced strong odors and vapors.
- Reducing power down from the Booster setting: If power management is activated, the blower automatically switches back to level 3 after 5 minutes.
- Delayed shutdown: This function runs the blower for a few minutes after cooking to neutralize lingering odors. The duration can be set (e.g., 5 minutes for 5 lights up, 15 minutes for 15 lights up).
- Turning off the fan: Push in the canopy. If the canopy is pulled out, the fan will operate at power level 2 again. An On/Off control is also available.
- Dimming/switching the cooktop lighting: The lighting can be switched on/off by pulling out the canopy and pushing it in, or by pressing the lighting control. Brightness can be adjusted.
- Safety shut-off: If power management is activated and the ventilation hood is left on for 12 hours, it will switch itself off automatically.
- Energy-saving tips:
- Ensure sufficient ventilation in the kitchen.
- Cook with the lowest possible setting.
- Check the power level selected on the hood; a lower power level is generally sufficient for most cooking.
- When large volumes of cooking vapors are produced, switch to a high power level in good time.
- Switch off the hood after use.
- Clean or change filters at regular intervals.
Maintenance Features
Adjusting the grease filter saturation indicator:
- The factory default setting is a cleaning interval of 30 hours.
- This can be shortened to 20 hours for frequent frying or lengthened to 40 or 50 hours for less frequent cooking.
- The indicator lights (1, 2, 3, B) show the current time setting (30, 40, 50 hours).
- To adjust, press the "-" control for a shorter duration or "+" for a longer duration, then confirm the selection by pressing the filter saturation indicator.
Adjusting or deactivating the filter saturation indicator for the charcoal filter:
- Charcoal filters are needed for recirculation mode.
- The factory default setting is an interval of 180 hours.
- This can be shortened to 120 hours (Indicator 1), or lengthened to 240 hours (Indicator 3).
- The indicator can also be deactivated.
- To adjust, press the "+" button and the operating-hours button at the same time.
- To confirm, press the filter saturation indicator.
Deactivating power management:
- Power management can be deactivated to increase energy consumption.
- To deactivate, press the "-" control to deactivate power management.
- The 1 and B indicators will flash.
- To activate, press the "+" control to activate power management.
Cleaning and care:
- Stainless steel housing: Clean with a non-abrasive cleaning agent designed specifically for use on stainless steel. Avoid unsuitable cleaning agents (soda, acid, chloride, solvent, abrasive powders, aggressive cleaners).
- Filter saturation indicator: The indicator reminds you when the grease filter needs cleaning or the charcoal filter needs replacing.
- Grease filter: An oversaturated grease filter is a fire hazard. Clean the grease filter at regular intervals (every 3 to 4 weeks).
- Removing: Pull out the canopy, push the grease filter on the right-hand side to the left and unlock it, then pull it down to remove.
- Cleaning: Can be cleaned in a dishwasher (Miele "Normal" program) or by hand with a soft nylon brush in a mild solution of hot water and dish soap.
- Replacing: If damaged, replace the grease filter.
- Resetting the filter saturation indicator: After cleaning, leave the filters on an absorbent surface to dry. While the fan is turned on, press the filter saturation indicator for approx. 3 seconds until 1 is the only indicator flashing.
- OdorFree Charcoal Filter: Replace charcoal filters when they no longer absorb kitchen odors (every 6 months).
- Installing/replacing: Remove the grease filter. Push the charcoal filters into the frames until they engage firmly. Reinsert the grease filter.
- Resetting the filter saturation indicator: After changing, press the filter saturation indicator twice with the blower turned on and hold it for approx. 3 seconds until 1 is the only indicator flashing.
- Disposing: Used charcoal filters can be disposed of with normal household waste.
- Reactivatable charcoal filters: Reactivatable charcoal filters are available for this ventilation hood and can be used several times after being reactivated in the oven. Follow operating instructions supplied with the filters.
