Overview

The Mitsubishi Electric PAC-SC36NA-E is a remote ON/OFF signal adapter designed for use with Mitsubishi Electric PAC series air conditioners for building applications. This adapter serves as a crucial wiring component, facilitating the connection of external circuits (which must be locally procured) to the outdoor unit's control board. Its primary function is to enable external control over various operational aspects of the air conditioning system, including low-level sound priority, power consumption, and ON/OFF functions.

Function Description

The PAC-SC36NA-E adapter allows the air conditioning unit to receive external signals, which in turn can modify its operational behavior. One key function enabled by this adapter is the "Low-level sound priority mode." When an external signal is input to the outdoor unit via the adapter, the unit can operate with a reduced sound level, typically 3 to 4 dB lower than its usual operation. This mode is particularly useful in environments where noise reduction is critical. To activate this mode, a commercial timer or an ON/OFF switch contactor, connected to the CNDM connector on the outdoor controller board, sends a signal to the adapter. This setup allows for the control of the compressor operation frequency, which directly impacts the sound output. The effectiveness of this mode is dependent on the load and the conditioned outdoor temperature.

Another significant function is "Demand control" or "ON/OFF Operation." This feature allows for external input to manage the unit's power consumption. In this mode, the power consumption can be decreased within a range of 0% to 100% of the usual consumption. This is achieved by connecting a locally procured switch (SW1) between the Orange (1) and Red (3) terminals of the adapter. The brown lead wire should be insulated. Furthermore, the adapter works in conjunction with internal settings (SW7-1 and SW7-2) on the outdoor unit's control board to define specific power consumption levels. For instance, setting both SW7-1 and SW7-2 to OFF, while SW1 is closed, will stop the operation entirely (compressor and condensing fan stop), though the indoor fan may continue operating based on user settings. Other combinations of SW7-1 and SW7-2 allow for 50% or 75% power consumption when SW1 is closed. This demand control functionality is crucial for energy management and compliance with building energy regulations. It's important to note that while demand control can stop the compressor and outdoor fan, it does not override the functions of the wired controller for the indoor unit.

Usage Features

The PAC-SC36NA-E is designed for straightforward integration into existing Mitsubishi Electric PAC series air conditioning systems. The connection process involves plugging the adapter's connector into the CNDM connector on the outdoor unit's control board. The connector is designed to fit in only one direction, preventing incorrect installation.

For extending the control cable, standard sheathed 2-core cables are recommended, such as CVV, CVS, or CPEV, with a size ranging from 0.5 mm² to 1.25 mm² (16 to 22 AWG). The maximum extension length for the control cable is 10 meters (32 ft). This flexibility in cable length allows for versatile placement of external control devices.

When selecting locally procured parts, such as external timers or switches, it is critical to choose components designed for minute electric current loads. The timer and switch contacts should be rated for 5 VDC, 12 V, or 1 mA. Using incorrect parts can lead to the adapter malfunctioning. For applications requiring a transit relay, especially when specific wiring restrictions apply, a suitable relay must be used.

The installation manual emphasizes safety precautions, advising users to ensure that all electrical work is performed by a licensed technician in accordance with local regulations and the provided instructions. This ensures safe and correct operation, preventing electrical shocks or fire hazards. The manual also highlights the importance of firmly connecting wiring with specified cables, ensuring no tension is exerted on the terminals, which could lead to overheating or fire.

Maintenance Features

The PAC-SC36NA-E itself is not designed for user modification or repair. Any issues or malfunctions should be addressed by a dealer or technical representative. Attempting to modify or repair the unit can lead to electric shock or fire and will likely void any warranty.

In the event of a malfunction, such as a burning smell, users are instructed to immediately stop the operation and turn off the main power supply. Continuing to operate a malfunctioning unit can cause further damage, electric shock, or fire. Contacting a dealer or technical representative for repair is the recommended course of action.

The manual also provides guidelines for installation environments to ensure the longevity and proper functioning of the adapter. It advises against installation in places exposed to flammable gas leakage, as this could cause an explosion. Similarly, environments with oil (including machine oil), steam, sulfuric gas, or acidic/alkaline solutions can deteriorate performance or damage components. Installation in steamy places like bathrooms or kitchens, or where moisture condensation is likely, should also be avoided to prevent electric shock or malfunction.

Furthermore, the adapter should not be installed in places where the temperature is outside the range of 0 °C (32 °F) to 40 °C (104 °F) or exposed to direct sunlight. Wiring should be installed without tension to prevent breakage, heating, or fire. All wiring should be covered by insulation tubing with supplementary insulation, and relays or switches used must comply with IEC or equivalent standards. The electric strength between accessible parts and the control circuit should be at least 2750 V. These guidelines contribute to the overall safety and reliability of the system, minimizing the need for frequent maintenance.
