The Mitutoyo U-WAVE-T is a wireless communication tool designed to transmit measurement data from Digimatic-output interfaced tools to the U-WAVE-R (an optional receiver) via a supplied connecting cable. This device is available in two types: an IP67 type and a buzzer type, each offering specific features for different operational environments. To ensure optimal performance and longevity, users should thoroughly read the manual and keep it accessible for quick reference.
The primary function of the U-WAVE-T is to enable wireless data transmission from a measuring tool to a receiver. This eliminates the need for physical cables during measurement, offering greater flexibility and mobility in various applications. The device operates on a wireless communication protocol compatible with IEEE802.15.4, utilizing a frequency range of 2.405 to 2.475 GHz across 15 channels. It employs Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) modulation for robust communication.
The U-WAVE-T features an LED display that provides visual feedback using three discrete colors: green, orange, and red. This display indicates various operational states, including successful communication, communication failure, and low battery. The buzzer type U-WAVE-T also incorporates an audible alarm for certain events, such as low battery voltage and communication status.
Data communication is initiated via a DATA switch on the connecting cable. A short press (t ≤ 2 seconds) transmits measurement data. Holding the switch for 2 to 5 seconds transmits a "Cancel" command, which informs the U-WAVE-R of a data error, indicating that the previously transmitted data was different from the current measurement value. Holding the switch for 5 to 10 seconds executes a U-WAVE-R search, allowing the U-WAVE-T to connect with a discoverable U-WAVE-R. If the DATA switch is held for more than 10 seconds, the orange LED stops blinking, and no function is performed.
The device is designed to operate within a temperature range of 0 to 40°C with 20 to 80% relative humidity (non-condensing) and can be stored at -10 to 60°C with the same humidity conditions.
Connecting the Device: Before initial use, the battery must be installed. The U-WAVE-T is shipped without a battery installed. After battery installation, the connecting cable (an optional accessory) must be attached. It is crucial to pay attention to the cable orientation: the black-marked side connects to the U-WAVE-T, and the gray-marked side connects to the measuring tool. Incorrect orientation will prevent data transmission. The cable is secured with two mounting screws, which should be tightened with a size 0 screwdriver to a torque of 5 to 8 N·cm. Ensure that the packing is correctly positioned and not detached during installation to maintain the device's integrity.
Registering Setting Information: After battery installation and cable connection, the U-WAVE-T requires registration of setting information with the U-WAVE-R. This process is detailed in the "U-WAVEPAK User's Manual" and should be performed using the DATA switch on the connecting cable before connecting to the measuring tool. The registered information is stored and retained even after battery changes.
Connecting to Measuring Tool: Once the setting information is registered, the U-WAVE-T can be connected to the measuring tool. To prevent interference with measurements and ensure easy viewing of the LED display, the cable leading to the measuring tool should be clamped using the supplied cable clamp or a Velcro fastener. It is important to tighten the connecting cable securely to the measuring tool to prevent accidental disconnection or damage.
Wireless Communication Environment: The performance of the U-WAVE-T can be affected by its environment. Obstructions such as concrete walls can block communication if the device is completely enclosed. Metallic partitions may reduce communication speed or block communication entirely. Other wireless devices like Wireless LAN, Bluetooth, ZigBee, and microwave ovens can also interfere with communication. To mitigate this, it is recommended to separate the communication channel (band ID) and installation site of each device as much as possible from the U-WAVE-T. In industrial settings, machine tools, electrical discharge machines, cranes, and arc welding equipment can also cause communication speed reduction or blockage.
Safety Precautions: Users should avoid using the U-WAVE-T near medical devices that could malfunction due to radio waves. In environments with external noise, communication may be interrupted, necessitating adequate failure prevention measures. The device should not be disassembled, shorted, modified, or heated. The battery contains an irritating substance; in case of accidental contact with eyes or skin, rinse immediately with clean water. If swallowed, rinse the mouth, induce vomiting, and seek medical attention.
Battery Replacement: The U-WAVE-T uses a CR2032 lithium battery. When the battery voltage becomes considerably low, the LED display blinks red, and the U-WAVE-T sends a low battery alarm error to the U-WAVE-R. The buzzer type also emits a buzzer sound. It is crucial to replace the battery immediately when these indicators appear. Even if the battery voltage temporarily recovers after consecutive transmissions, it should still be replaced if the LED display becomes dim or the buzzer sound weakens.
To replace the battery:
To remove the battery, a small flat-blade screwdriver can be inserted between the battery retaining claw and the battery to pry it out. Always use a size 0 screwdriver for screwing/unscrewing and apply a torque of 5 to 8 N·cm.
Care and Storage: To maintain the IP67 dust and water resistance, ensure the connecting cable is connected and the battery cover is securely mounted. For extended storage, remove the battery from the U-WAVE-T if it will not be used for more than 3 months to prevent damage from battery leaks. Store the device in a safe place, away from direct sunlight, excessively high or low temperatures, and solutions such as acid, alkali, or organic solvents.
Cable Maintenance: The connecting cable sheath should be regularly inspected for damage. If the sheath is broken, liquid can infiltrate the U-WAVE-T and the measuring tool due to capillary action, causing malfunctions. Replace damaged cables immediately. Exercise care to avoid applying undue force or curvature to the connecting cable, which can damage internal electronic parts.
Packing Integrity: The packing on each part of the U-WAVE-T is critical for maintaining dust and water resistance. Ensure that the packing is not damaged by cutting chips, dirt, or other debris. If any packing is damaged, the dust and water resistance will be impaired, and the packing should be replaced, or the U-WAVE-T should be repaired by a service center.
Initialization of Setting Information: If communication issues persist despite troubleshooting, the setting information registered in section 4 can be initialized to default settings. To do this:
Disposal: The U-WAVE-T should not be treated as household waste. In the European Union and other countries with separate collection systems, it should be reused and recycled to minimize environmental impact. Contact local dealers or distributors for further information on proper disposal.
