Overview

This document is the Owner's Manual for Monessen BUF32/36/42 series vent-free fireboxes, providing essential information for care and operation. It is intended for both installers, who should leave it with the user, and owners, who should retain it for future reference.

Function Description:

The Monessen BUF32/36/42 series are vent-free firebox enclosures designed for use with listed gas-fired unvented decorative room heaters. These fireboxes are not intended for burning solid fuels like wood, nor are they designed to be a primary heat source. They serve as a supplemental zone heater or a decorative appliance. The vent-free design means they draw combustion air from the room and exhaust combustion byproducts directly into the room, necessitating adequate ventilation.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Models Covered: BUF32A, BUF36A, BUF42A; BUF32-T, BUF36-T, BUF42-T; BUF32-H, BUF36-H, BUF42-H.

    • Firebox Sides: 0 in.
    • Firebox Top: 0 in.
    • Firebox Bottom: 0 in.
    • Side Wall, from firebox opening: 9 in.
    • Ceiling, from firebox opening: 42 in.
  • Mantel Heights: Detailed guidelines are provided for both combustible and non-combustible mantels, with minimum "A" dimensions (from top of firebox opening) of 17.00 inches (432 mm) for combustible and 12.00 inches (305 mm) for non-combustible. A minimum 24-inch TV height dimension is also specified above the firebox opening.
  • Fuel Type: For use only with a listed gas-fired unvented decorative room heater (liquid propane or natural gas).

Usage Features:

  • Vent-Free Operation: The firebox operates without a vent, meaning it releases heat and combustion byproducts directly into the room. This requires provisions for adequate combustion and ventilation air.
  • Safety First: The manual emphasizes critical safety warnings, including the risk of fire, burns, explosion, and carbon monoxide poisoning if instructions are not followed. It explicitly states not to burn solid wood fuels or any other combustible material in the firebox.
  • Children Safety: Strong recommendations are made to keep children away from the hot surfaces, supervise them carefully, and consider a physical barrier or safety gate.
  • Break-In Procedure: An initial break-in period of two to three hours at the highest setting with maximum ventilation (opening windows or doors) is required to burn off manufacturing oils and bonding agents, which may produce temporary odors and smoke.
  • Over Firing Prevention: The firebox is considered over-firing if flames are higher than the firebox opening. Over-firing can void the warranty and indicates a need for service.
  • Appliance Compatibility: The firebox is designed for use with specific listed gas-fired unvented decorative room heaters. Users must ensure the heater's minimum firebox size requirements are met and its BTU/hr rating does not exceed the firebox's maximum allowable input.
  • Prohibited Uses: Do not use with solid fuel, glass doors, or as a primary heat source. Do not install in bathrooms or bedrooms unless the heater's input rating is 10,000 Btu/hr or less.
  • Drafts and Fans: Avoid drafts that alter burner flame patterns and do not allow fans to blow directly into the firebox, as this can cause sooting and improper burning.
  • Accessories: Only Hearth & Home Technologies-approved optional accessories and decorative fronts should be used to prevent safety hazards and avoid voiding the warranty.

Maintenance Features:

  • Annual Professional Service: Installation and repair, as well as an annual inspection and cleaning, should be performed by a qualified service person. This includes checking paint condition, warped surfaces, corrosion, perforation, and ensuring control compartments, burners, and air passageways are clean.
  • Homeowner Maintenance (Annually):
    • Screen: Assess condition, replace if necessary, inspect for damage, ensure it's not blocked, and vacuum/dust surfaces.
    • Firebox Inspection: Visually inspect for any issues.
    • Light Bulbs: Replace as needed.
    • Refractory: Inspect annually.
  • Cleaning: More frequent cleaning may be required in homes with excessive lint from carpeting or bedding material.
  • Sooting Prevention: Correct installation of logs, proper heater location, and annual cleaning are necessary to prevent sooting.
  • Water Damage: If any part of the room heater has been under water, immediately call a qualified service technician for inspection and replacement of affected parts.
  • Safety Screen/Guard: Any safety screen or guard removed for servicing must be replaced before operating the heater.
  • Odor and Noise: The manual addresses common issues like initial odors from manufacturing and metallic noise from thermal expansion/contraction, clarifying them as normal occurrences that do not affect the firebox's longevity.

The manual also includes a detailed Limited Lifetime Warranty from Hearth & Home Technologies LLC, outlining coverage periods for various components, conditions, exclusions, and limitations. It emphasizes that the warranty covers products purchased from authorized dealers and is subject to proper installation and maintenance.
