Why does my Monessen Hearth Gas Heater produce unwanted odors?
    • K
      kelly93Aug 16, 2025
If your Monessen Hearth Gas Heater produces unwanted odors, it could be due to several reasons. It might be burning vapors from paint, hair spray, or glues; in this case, ventilate the room and avoid using odor-causing products while the heater is running. A gas leak could also be the source; locate and correct any leaks. Alternatively, it could be due to the initial burn-off; ventilate the room and turn the unit on high until the odor disappears, which should happen after about 6 hours of continuous use.

How to fix no spark at pilot on Monessen Hearth DEB20?
    • D
      Daniel JohnsonAug 26, 2025
If the ignitor button is pressed and there is no spark at the ODS/pilot of your Monessen Hearth Gas Heater, there could be several reasons. The ignitor electrode might be positioned wrong or broken, in which case you should replace the ignitor. The ignitor electrode might not be connected to the ignitor cable; reconnect the ignitor cable. The ignitor cable could be pinched or wet; free the ignitor cable if it's pinched by any metal or tubing. A broken ignitor cable should be replaced. Finally, a bad piezo ignitor should also be replaced.

Why does the pilot light go out on my Monessen Hearth DEB20 when I release the knob?
    • W
      Walter JohnsonAug 31, 2025
If the ODS/pilot lights, but the flame goes out when the control knob is released on your Monessen Hearth Gas Heater, ensure the control knob is fully pressed in. If that doesn't work, after the ODS/pilot lights, keep the control knob pressed in for 30 seconds. Also, fully open the manual shutoff valve. Check the thermocouple connection at the control valve and hand tighten it until snug, then tighten it an additional 1/4 turn. If the pilot flame is not touching the thermocouple, contact your local gas company, as this could be due to low gas pressure or a dirty/partially clogged ODS/pilot. Replace the thermocouple if it is damaged. Finally, the control valve might be damaged, so replace it if necessary.

    • R
      ryanloganSep 9, 2025
If the logs appear to smoke after initial operation of your Monessen Hearth Gas Heater, it is likely due to vapors from paint or the curing process of the logs. This problem should stop after a few hours of operation. Run the heater with the damper open (if you have one) or open a window for the first few hours. If the log heater is intended to be smokeless, turn off the heater and call a qualified service person.

What to do if my Monessen Hearth DEB20 Gas Heater shuts off during use?
    • M
      Matthew PrinceSep 12, 2025
If your Monessen Hearth Gas Heater shuts off during use, it may be due to several reasons. Insufficient fresh air for the ODS/pilot operation can cause this; try opening a window or door for ventilation. Low line pressure could also be the cause; contact your local gas company to check this. A partially clogged ODS/pilot can also lead to shutdowns; try cleaning the ODS/pilot. A defective thermopile may also be responsible, so check the wire connections and ensure the output is 500 mV across the TH/TP and TP terminals when the ON/OFF switches are off. Restrictions in incoming airflow, such as a bottom riser on a glass door, a sunken fireplace, or excessive lava rock/cinders densely packed against the grate, can also cause the heater to shut off.

Why is my Monessen Hearth DEB20 whistling?
    • M
      Matthew SinghSep 12, 2025
If your Monessen Hearth Gas Heater produces a whistling noise when the burner is lit, it could be due to turning the control knob to the HIGH position when the burner is cold; turn the control knob to the LOW position and let it warm up for a minute. Air in the gas line could also cause this; operate the burner until the air is removed from the line and have the gas line checked by your local gas company. Alternatively, dirty or partially clogged burner orifices might be the cause; clean the burner or replace the burner orifice.

      Alexis RamirezNov 27, 2025
If the ignitor button is pressed and there is a spark at the ODS/pilot, but no ignition occurs on your Monessen Hearth Gas Heater, there are several potential causes. First, check if the gas supply is turned off or if the manual shutoff valve is closed; if so, turn on the gas supply or open the manual shutoff valve. Next, ensure the control knob is in the PILOT position. Also, make sure the control knob is pressed in while in the PILOT position. If there is air in the gas lines from installation, continue holding down the control knob and repeat the igniting operation until the air is removed. A clogged ODS/pilot can also prevent ignition; replace the ODS/pilot assembly or get it serviced. Finally, the gas regulator setting might not be correct; check the incoming pressure and replace the ...
