Overview

This document provides comprehensive assembly and operating instructions for the Monument Mesa 405BZ Liquid Propane Gas Grill, designed for outdoor use only. It emphasizes safety, proper installation, and maintenance to ensure optimal performance and longevity of the appliance.

Function Description

The Monument Mesa 405BZ is a liquid propane gas grill intended for outdoor cooking. It features multiple burners, a warming rack, and cast iron cooking grids, allowing for various cooking methods such as direct and indirect grilling. The grill is designed to operate with a standard 20 lb. Liquid Propane Gas tank, which is not included. It incorporates an Overfill Prevention Device (OPD) in the gas tank connection to prevent overfilling and ensure safe operation. The grill includes an electronic ignition system for easy lighting of the main and side burners. An LED lamp panel and control knobs provide user-friendly operation. The grill also features a grease tray and grease box for efficient management of cooking by-products.

Usage Features

The grill offers both direct and indirect cooking methods. Direct cooking involves placing food directly over the lit burners with the lid up, ideal for searing meats, poultry, or fish to achieve a barbecued taste. Indirect cooking requires placing food on the left or right side of the grill with the burner on the opposite side lit and the lid down, suitable for slower cooking.

Before initial use, a "burn-off" procedure is recommended to eliminate any manufacturing odors or foreign matter. This involves igniting the burners, closing the lid, and operating the grill on the HIGH setting for 3 to 5 minutes.

The grill provides different temperature settings for various cooking needs:

  • High setting: Used for fast warm-up, searing steaks or chops, and burning off food residue after cooking. It is not recommended for extended cooking.
  • Medium to Low settings: Suitable for most recipes, including smoking, rotisserie cooking, and cooking lean cuts like fish. Temperature settings may vary based on external conditions like wind.

The electronic ignition system allows for quick and easy lighting of the main burners and the side burner. To light a main burner, the user must open the grill lid, push and turn a main burner knob to the IGNITE/HI position, and simultaneously press and hold the electronic ignition button for 3 to 5 seconds. A similar procedure applies to the side burner, requiring the side burner lid to be fully open.

The manual also includes a cooking chart with USDA-recommended safe minimum internal temperatures for various foods, along with special instructions and tips for grilling different types of meat, vegetables, and poultry. This helps users achieve desired doneness while ensuring food safety.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for the safe and efficient operation of the Mesa 405BZ grill. The manual outlines several cleaning and inspection procedures:

Cleaning Cooking Grids: These should be washed with a mild soap and warm water solution using a washcloth or soft brush to remove cooking residue.

Cleaning Heat Diffusers: Periodically, these should be washed in a soap and warm water solution with a soft brush to remove stubborn burnt-on residue. They must be dry before reinstallation.

Cleaning Grease Tray: The grease tray should be emptied and wiped down regularly and washed with a mild detergent and warm water solution. A small amount of sand or cat litter can be placed in the bottom of the tray to absorb grease. Frequent checks are necessary to prevent excessive grease accumulation and overflow.

Annual Cleaning of Grill Interior: Once a year, a thorough cleaning of the entire grill interior is recommended. This involves:

  1. Turning all burner valves and the LP gas tank valve to OFF.
  2. Detaching the LP gas hose and regulator assembly and inspecting for damage.
  3. Removing and cleaning heat diffusers, cooking grids, and grill burners.
  4. Covering gas valve orifices with aluminum foil.
  5. Brushing the inside and bottom of the grill with a nylon brush and washing with mild soap and warm water solution, then rinsing and drying thoroughly.
  6. Removing the aluminum foil and reinstalling heat diffusers and cooking grids.
  7. Reconnecting the gas source and observing burner flame for correct operation.

Cleaning Exterior Surface: The exterior of the grill should be washed with a mild soap and warm water solution using a washcloth or sponge. Abrasive cleaners or brushes should be avoided to prevent damage to the finish. For stainless steel surfaces, a stainless steel cleaner is recommended to polish and prevent tanning discoloration caused by weathering, heat, or manufacturing oils.

Cleaning Burner Tubes and Burner Ports: This is a critical maintenance task to prevent "FLASH-BACK" fires, especially during late summer or early fall when spiders are active, or after extended periods of non-use. The procedure involves:

  1. Turning all burner valves and the gas tank valve to OFF.
  2. Detaching the LP gas regulator assembly.
  3. Removing cooking grids, heat diffusers, and the grease tray.
  4. Removing screws from the underside of each burner and lifting the burners away from the gas valve orifice.
  5. Using a bent stiff wire, air hose, or bottle brush to clean inside the burner tubes to remove debris.
  6. Replacing the burners, ensuring the burner tube correctly fits over the gas valve orifice.

Checking for LP Gas Leaks: This should be done prior to first use, at the beginning of each season, and every time the LP gas tank is changed. A 50/50 soap/water solution is applied to all gas connections. The appearance of growing bubbles indicates a leak, requiring tightening or repair of connections. The tank seams should also be checked for leaks.

Replacing the Battery: If the LED lights do not illuminate, the battery in the battery box (located on the side panel) needs to be replaced with four "AA" size batteries, ensuring correct polarity.

The manual also provides troubleshooting steps for common issues such as the grill not lighting, yellow or orange burner flames, low heat, and error codes, guiding users to resolve problems or seek professional assistance when necessary.
