2. AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM “OFF SEASON”
FUNCTIONAL TESTS
During cold winter months, the system should be oper-
ated for a minimum of 15 minutes every two weeks to
maintain a thin film of oil on the compressor drive shaft
dynamic seal to prevent leakage.
-CAUTION-
Extended operation of the system at low am-
bient temperatures could result in major dam-
age of the R- 134a compressor.
-NOTE-
If ambient temperature is below 32
o
F(0
o
C) the
pressure switch may require an electrical jumper
to allow the compressor drive motor power con-
tactor to energize and enable system to operate.
21-59-00 - SERVICE PRECAUTIONS
1. Refrigerant handling
Always wear eye and hand protection when servicing
an air conditioning system. Liquid refrigerant can
cause frostbite and/or blindness.
2. Recovery of refrigerant
Do not discharge R- 134a refrigerant into the atmo-
sphere. Although its ozone depletion potential is zero, it
can have an effect on global warming. In the United
States, recovery and recycling are mandated by the
Clean Air Act.
Refrigerant recovery/recycling service equipment
must be approved for use with R- 134a refrigerant. Re-
cycling machines must be approved by Underwriters
Laboratories and meet SAE standard J2210 and SAE
standard J2099 for refrigerant purity.
3. Ventilation
Keep refrigerants and oils away from open flames. Re-
frigerants can produce poisonous gasses in the pres-
ence of a flame. Work in a well ventilated area and
avoid breathing refrigerant/lubricant vapor mist if acci-
dental discharge occurs.
4. Avoid use of compressed air
Do not introduce compressed air or oxygen into an air
conditioning system or refrigerant container. R- 134a in
the presence of air or oxygen above atmospheric pres-
sure may form a combustible mixture.
