TROUBLE SYMPTOM POSSIBLE CAUSE/REMEDY
Propeller Overspeed: The RPM of the propeller or engine
exceeds predetermined maximum
limits; the condition in which the en-
gine/propeller RPM is higher than
the RPM selected by the pilot
through the propeller control lever.
Check:
1 - Tachometer error.
2 - Low pitch stop adjustment.
3 - Governor maximum RPM set too
high.
4 - Loss of oil pressure
- Oil starvation
- Governor failure
5 - Oil leaking past piston causing
hydraulic lock of piston in cylinder.
Propeller Underspeed: The actual engine/propeller RPM is
lower than the RPM selected by the
pilot through the propeller control le-
ver.
Check:
1 - Tachometer error.
2 - Governor oil passage clogged.
Oil or Grease Leakage: - CAUTION -
Grease leakage that can be de-
scribed as excessive and appear-
ing suddenly, especially when ac-
companied by vibration, should
be investigated immediately be-
fore further flight.
NOTE:
Hartzell recommends that new or
newly overhauled propellers be lu-
bricated after the first one or two
hours of operatio n because centrif-
ugal loads will pack and redistrib-
ute grease, which may result in a
propeller imbalance. Redistribu-
tion of grease may also result in
voids in the blade bearing area
where moisture can collect.
Check for:
1 - Improperly torqued or loose lu-
brication fitting.
2 - Defective lubrication fitting.
3 - Damaged blade shank to hub O-
ring seal.
4 - Damaged hub seal (at hub part-
ing line).
5 - Damaged engine transfer O- ring
at hub/engine flange interface.
6 - Cracked hub. A cracked hub is
often indicated by grease emerging
from a seemingly solid surface, es-
pecially in the blade arm area.
61-40-00 - PROPELLER BALANCING
The propeller/spinner combination assembly is dynam-
ically balanced at Mooney Aircraft Company, Inc. Any
maintenance action to be accomplished on any compo-
nent of these two assemblies should take this into con-
sideration. There are many different models of Dynam-
ic Propeller Balancing Equipment, therefore details of
proper operation and procedures should be taken from
manuals of the specific manufacturer for equipment be-
ing used.
