The Morphy Richards Verve Pour Over Filter Coffee Maker is designed to bring the superior taste of manual pour-over coffee into your home with the convenience of a programmable machine. This appliance is intended for household and similar applications, such as farmhouses, hotels, motels, and bed and breakfast environments. It is not suitable for use in staff kitchen areas in shops, offices, and other working environments.
The Verve Pour Over Filter Coffee Maker operates by gradually filtering hot water through ground coffee in a controlled manner, a technique known as "pour over." This method is increasingly popular for producing a fuller, smoother, and richer tasting coffee. The machine incorporates two key differences from standard filter products: a "cupcake" filter and a specially developed brewing process.
The "cupcake" filter is shaped like the bottom of a cupcake, rather than the more traditional cone. This design allows for a more even flow of water through the coffee grounds, preventing over-extraction in the narrowest part of the filter and delivering a smoother taste.
The brewing process mimics the manual method used by baristas. It begins with a "pre-soaking" phase, where a small volume of hot water is delivered over the ground coffee. This allows the coffee to "bloom" by releasing carbon dioxide, which would otherwise hinder flavor extraction. The machine waits for this blooming process to finish before proceeding with the main brewing, resulting in a fuller flavor.
The coffee maker features a control panel with various buttons and a display screen. It includes a lid, an internal water gauge, a carafe with a lid, a hot plate, a removable permanent filter, a removable filter holder, and a water reservoir.
Quick Start: Before first use, remove all packaging and wash detachable parts (permanent filter, filter holder, glass carafe) in warm soapy water. Operate the coffee maker with water only for the first use. The lid may be stiff initially, so steady the machine with one hand while lifting the lid with the other.
To make coffee:
Setting the Clock: To set the time of day, plug in the coffee maker, and the display will illuminate. Press and hold the Program/Clock Button (11) for 3 seconds. Use the Select Up & Down (14 & 15) Buttons to adjust the time (12-hour clock). Press the Program/Clock Button (11) again to confirm.
Using the Strength Selector: Adjust the brew strength for 1 to 12 cups of coffee. Press the Strength Selector Button (12) once; the display will flash "STRENGTH" and show the strength icon. Use the Select Up and Down (14 & 15) Buttons to choose the strength, then press the Strength Selector Button (12) to confirm. For brewing 1-4 cups, the machine can automatically set the optimum program. Press and hold the Strength Selector Button (12) for 3 seconds; the screen will display "1-4", and the machine will adjust the cycle automatically.
Pre-setting a Brewing Time: Ensure the clock is set first. Follow the 'Setting the clock' instructions. Follow 'Using your coffee maker - Quick Start' steps 1-3. Press the Program/Clock Button (11); the screen will display "PROGRAM". The default time (12 am) will be shown. Use the Up (14) and Down (15) buttons to change the time, then press Program (11) to confirm. After setting, the machine will beep and display the selected time for 3 seconds before returning to the current time. To cancel, press the Program/Clock Button (11) again until the "PROGRAM" icon disappears.
Keep Warm Function: After brewing, the coffee maker automatically activates a 25-minute keep warm function. The display will show "TIME SINCE BREW" and count up from 0:00. The machine will enter standby mode after the keep warm mode finishes. Press any button to reactivate. To switch off keep warm mode early, press the On/Off Button (16). To prevent the keep warm function from activating at all, press the Keep Warm/Clean Button (13) before setting the brew cycle, then press the Select Down Button (15) until the timer displays 0:00. Press the Keep Warm/Clean Button again to confirm.
Refilling Your Coffee Maker: Switch off the coffee maker and allow 3 minutes to cool before refilling with cold water.
Cleaning Your Coffee Maker: Unplug the coffee maker and allow it to cool. Do not immerse the coffee maker in liquid. Rinse the Water Reservoir occasionally with cold water; do not use a cloth that may leave residue or lint. Remove the Removable Permanent Filter, discard used coffee, and wash. Extended soaking helps remove coffee stains. Wash the Glass Carafe, Carafe Lid, and Removable Filter Holder in warm soapy water. Rinse and dry all parts thoroughly. Refit the Removable Permanent Filter and Removable Filter Holder. Wipe all external surfaces, including the Hot Plate, with a damp cloth and dry thoroughly. Take care not to damage the non-drip valve on the bottom of the removable filter holder during cleaning. Never use harsh or abrasive cleaners. No parts are suitable for cleaning in a dishwasher.
Auto Clean (Descaling): For a deeper clean, combine 6 cups of white vinegar and 4 cups of cold water in the reservoir. Press and hold the Keep Warm/Clean Button (13) until the screen indicates "CLEAN", then press the On/Off Button (16). The coffee maker will beep and begin the cycle. Allow the machine to run for 45-60 minutes until the cycle is complete. Discard the dirty liquid in the Carafe (5) and run your coffee maker with cold water 2 or 3 times before using again.
Descaling: If you live in a hard water area, descale your coffee maker every 2-3 months; in moderately hard water areas, every 6 months. Slower water filtration indicates descaling may be necessary. Use a proprietary liquid descaler specifically made for coffee makers and plastic kettles. Follow the instructions on the bottle or sachet, then operate the coffee maker with just water 3 times before making coffee. Do not use a kettle descaler unless it explicitly states suitability for coffee makers. Note: The removable permanent filter should not be used during descaling.
