What to do if my MTD 462 thru 465 unit does not discharge?
    • R

If your MTD Chippers/Shredders unit isn't discharging, it might be because the discharge chute is clogged. Immediately stop the engine, disconnect the spark plug wire, and clean both the flail screen and the inside of the discharge opening. Another reason could be a foreign object stuck in the impeller; if so, stop the engine, disconnect the spark plug wire, and remove the object. Also, ensure the engine is running at full throttle. Finally, check if the vacuum bag is full and empty it if necessary.

How to fix MTD Chippers/Shredders engine that fails to start?
    • M
      maryreidAug 3, 2025
Your MTD Chippers/Shredders engine might fail to start because the spark plug wire is disconnected. Connect the wire to the spark plug. The fuel tank could be empty or contain stale fuel; if so, fill the tank with clean, fresh gasoline. Ensure the throttle control lever is in the FAST position. Also, check that the choke is in the CHOKE position. A blocked fuel line could also be the culprit, so clean the fuel line. Lastly, the spark plug might be faulty; in that case, clean, adjust the gap, or replace it.

Why does my MTD Chippers/Shredders engine run erratic?
    • Z
      zherreraAug 9, 2025
If the engine of your MTD Chippers/Shredders runs erratically, check the spark plug wire and make sure it is connected and tightened. Ensure the unit is not running on CHOKE by moving the choke lever to the OFF position. A blocked fuel line or stale fuel could also cause this issue; clean the fuel line and refill the tank with fresh gasoline. Check for water or dirt in the fuel system and drain the fuel tank, then refill with fresh fuel. Additionally, a dirty air cleaner can cause erratic engine performance, so clean or replace the air cleaner. If none of these steps resolve the issue, the carburetor might be out of adjustment, and you should see an authorized service dealer.
