Why won't my MTD 760-770 engine start?
    • J
      Joseph BarnesAug 13, 2025
If your MTD Lawn Mower engine won't start, several factors could be at play. First, ensure the PTO/Blade is disengaged by placing the knob or lever in the OFF position and the parking brake is engaged. Check that the spark plug wire is securely connected to the spark plug. Make sure the fuel tank isn't empty and contains clean, fresh gasoline (less than 30 days old). Activate the choke by placing the throttle control in the CHOKE position, or position the throttle lever to FAST. Inspect the spark plug for faults, cleaning, adjusting the gap, or replacing it as necessary. Clear any blockage in the fuel line and replace the fuel filter. If the engine is flooded, crank it with the throttle in the FAST position.

      Anna AndersonAug 16, 2025
An MTD Lawn Mower engine running erratically can stem from several causes. Ensure the throttle control is out of the CHOKE position. Check and tighten the spark plug wire. Clean any blockages in the fuel line, use clean, fresh gasoline, and replace the fuel filter if needed. Clear any blockage in the gas cap vent, replacing the cap if damaged. Drain the fuel tank and refill with clean, fresh gasoline if there's water or dirt in the fuel system. Finally, replace a dirty air cleaner paper element or clean the foam pre-cleaner, if equipped.

How to fix rough idling on my MTD 760-770 Lawn Mower?
    • H
      huntersharonAug 25, 2025
A rough idle in your MTD Lawn Mower engine could be due to a fouled or faulty spark plug, or one with a gap that's too wide; replace the spark plug and set the correct plug gap. Another potential cause is a dirty air cleaner; replace the air cleaner element and/or clean the pre-cleaner, if equipped.

What to do if my MTD 760-770 will not mulch grass?
    • T
      Tina BrownAug 27, 2025
If your MTD Lawn Mower isn't mulching grass effectively, make sure the engine speed isn't too low by placing the throttle in the FAST position. Avoid mulching when the grass is wet. If the grass is excessively high, mow once at a high cutting height, then mow again at your desired height, or make a narrower cutting swath. A dull blade can also be the culprit, so sharpen or replace it.

Why does my MTD 760-770 leave an uneven cut?
    • K
      Katherine WrightSep 4, 2025
An uneven cut with your MTD Lawn Mower can result from several factors. The deck may not be leveled properly, so perform a side-to-side deck adjustment. A dull blade can also cause this issue, so sharpen or replace the blade. Finally, check the tire pressure in all four tires to ensure they are even.
