Overview

The Natural Home MG-30 is a point-of-entry filtration system designed for large homes and businesses, offering comprehensive water purification for an average of 5-7 years between service. It effectively reduces a broad spectrum of contaminants, ensuring pure, safe, natural-tasting water and enhancing the quality of bath and shower experiences.

Function Description:

The MG-30 system works by filtering water through a multi-stage media bed. The primary function is to reduce chlorine, chloramines, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), trihalomethanes (THMs), and heavy metals. The filtration process begins with Filter Sand, which prevents channeling in the carbon media and reduces particulates, trapping sediments and foreign debris. Next, the water passes through a Carbon Blend, consisting of 2.5 cubic feet of Centaur and GAC Coconut Carbon. This blend is crucial for reducing harmful chemicals like chlorine, chloramines, THMs, VOCs, dirt, rust, lead, sediment, and foreign odors, while also improving taste. The system also incorporates KDF Mediaguard®, an oxidative mineral that further reduces chlorine and chloramines and extends the life of the carbon media. Finally, Garnet, the second level of the filter bed, helps prevent channeling and further reduces particulates, trapping sediments and foreign debris. The entire process is managed by a Fleck 2815 automatic backwash valve, which regenerates the system every 4 days, flushing out contaminants and extending the filter's life. This valve comes pre-programmed to ensure optimal performance.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Media: The system utilizes a blend of 2.5 cubic feet of GAC & Centaur mix carbon, 3x Mediaguard with parallel KDF85 stages, Filter Sand, Mixed Garnet, and Filter Gravel.
  • Flow Rate: It can achieve a flow rate of 30 gallons (114 liters) per minute at a 50 psi inlet pressure.
  • Water Pressure: The operating pressure range is 40-100 psi (2.76-6.895 bar). A minimum of 35 psi is required for effective operation, and pressure exceeding 100 psi necessitates a pressure regulator.
  • Dimensions: The unit measures 14 inches (35.6 cm) in diameter and 67.5 inches (171.5 cm) in height.
  • Connections: It features 1.5-inch (38.1 mm) Female NPT inlet/outlet and a 1.5-inch (38.1 mm) Female NPT drain.
  • Weight: The system weighs 245 lbs (111 kg).
  • Operating Temperature: The recommended operating temperature range is 40°F – 150°F (4.4°C – 66°C). Exposure to freezing temperatures should be avoided.
  • Construction: The tank is made of polished 304L 14-gauge stainless steel, internally coated to resist chemical pitting and corrosion.
  • Controller Valve: Fleck 2815, operating on AC 110V, 60 Hz (220V, 50Hz optional).
  • Rated Filter Life: 5-7 years.
  • Product Warranty: 3 years mechanical warranty.
  • Water Source Requirement: Engineered for use with potable, municipally treated water only. A minimum water flow of 15 gpm at 35 psi is required for proper regeneration.

Usage Features:

The MG-30 is designed for ease of use and long-term reliability.

  • Automatic Regeneration: The Fleck 2815 controller automatically initiates a backwash cycle every 4 days at 3 AM for 25 minutes, ensuring consistent filtration effectiveness.
  • Manual Regeneration: Users can manually initiate a regeneration cycle by turning the Manual Control Knob clockwise until the service position indicator aligns with the time of day arrow, then one more click clockwise. This is useful for maintenance or after power outages.
  • Time of Day Adjustment: The time of day can be set by pressing and holding the red button, rotating the 24-hour gear to the correct time, and then releasing the button.
  • Regeneration Cycle Adjustment: The frequency of regeneration can be adjusted by sliding tabs on the skipper wheel outward. Each tab represents one day, allowing users to customize the regeneration schedule.
  • Bypass Valves: The system includes bypass valves, which are essential for testing, service, refurbishment, or relocation. These allow water to bypass the filtration system without interrupting the home's water supply.
  • Power Outage Resilience: During a power outage, the MG-30 continues to filter water, but the clock stops, and regeneration will not occur. The time setting needs to be reset once power is restored, and a manual regeneration may be required to maintain filtration effectiveness. A small universal power supply (UPS) can be used to maintain power to the clock during brief outages.

Maintenance Features:

  • Annual Chlorine Testing: It is recommended to test the system's chlorine reduction efficiency once a year. This involves comparing a sample from the kitchen tap (cold water) with an unfiltered control sample. The system should reduce at least 90% of chlorine.
  • Regular Time Setting Check: Users should check the MG-30 time settings and perform a manual regeneration at least every three months to ensure the control valve is working properly.
  • Leak Detection: After installation, a thorough leak check is required. For indoor installations, an electronic water shut-off system (e.g., WaterCop) is highly recommended to prevent water damage from unexpected leaks.
  • Media Inspection: After the initial regeneration cycles, a test spigot is used to flush water through a mesh bag to inspect for carbon or KDF debris. No more than 1/4 teaspoon of granular media should be present, indicating proper system integrity.
  • Outdoor Installation Considerations: For outdoor installations, a concrete foundation and roof or covering are suggested. A ground-fault interrupt (GFI) switch is recommended, and both the valve and switch should be protected from the elements. A drip pan is advised in locations with high-temperature differentials to catch condensation.
  • Plumbing Condition: The existing plumbing should be free from lead, lime, and iron buildup. Heavily built-up piping should be replaced. All new plumbing must comply with local codes.
  • Water Quality Warning: The system is designed for municipally treated water. It cannot be used with water that is microbiologically unsafe, contains unusually high suspended solids, or has extremely high concentrations of chemicals or other elements.
