Overview

The NEILSEN CT2129 (Ref no. TH210) is a 3-in-1 stud center finding, metal, and AC live wire detector designed for various scanning tasks. This instruction manual provides comprehensive details on its specifications, important safety information, technical description, usage, and maintenance.

Function Description:

The device is a multi-functional scanner capable of detecting different types of objects behind surfaces. Its primary functions include:

  • Stud Center Finding: Locates the center of wood and metal studs.
  • Metal Detection: Identifies metal rebar and other metallic objects.
  • AC Live Wire Detection: Detects live electrical wires, enhancing safety during work.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Detection Depth:
    • Detects wood and metal studs up to 1-1/2" (38mm).
    • Detects metal rebar up to 3" (76mm).
    • Detects AC live wire up to 3" (76mm).
  • Operating Conditions:
    • Operating temperature / humidity: 0°C to 40°C.
  • Power Supply:
    • DC 9V (battery included).
  • Safety Warning:
    • Users are advised to wear approved safety glasses and ear defenders during operation.

Usage Features:

General Operating Tips:

  • Tool Position: Always place the scanner flat against the surface before turning on power for proper use.
  • Calibration: Place the unit flat on the wall, then press and hold the Scan button. Do not move the unit until calibration is complete (1-2 seconds). A short beep will sound, and the bars on the display will clear, indicating successful calibration.
  • Operation: Move the unit slowly, keeping it flat against the wall. Avoid rocking or lifting the unit during scanning.

Mode Selection:

The device offers different scan modes to suit various detection needs:

  • Stud Scan Modes:
    • 1/2" Scan Mode: Scans through surfaces up to 1/2 inch thick.
    • 1" Scan Mode: Scans through surfaces up to 1 inch thick.
    • 1-1/2" Scan Mode: Scans through surfaces up to 1-1/2 inch thick.
    • If the thickness of the scanning surface is unknown, it is recommended to start with 1-1/2" Scan Mode and then choose a more suitable mode to verify the center of studs.
  • Metal Mode: Select this mode when scanning for metal pipes or rebar.
  • AC Mode: Select this mode when scanning for electrical wires.

Scanning in Stud Mode:

  1. After calibrating, continue to hold the scan button and slowly slide the unit across the surface.
  2. As the unit approaches the edge of a stud, bars on the display will indicate proximity.
  3. Continue moving the scanner slowly until the display indicates the "EDGE" of the stud.
  4. Further movement will cause the audio signal and display to indicate the "CENTER" of the stud.
  5. Continue in the same direction to locate the other edge of the stud.

Scanning in Metal or AC Mode:

  1. Select the appropriate mode (Metal or AC).
  2. After calibrating, continue to hold the scan button and slowly slide the unit across the surface.
  3. Mark the spot where the display bars peak and a steady tone sounds.
  4. Continue in the same direction until the display bars reduce.
  5. Reverse direction and mark the spot where the display bars peak from that direction.
  6. The midpoint of these two marks represents the approximate center of the object.

AC Wire Warning (Continuous in All Modes):

  • For safety, the AC Wire Warning feature operates continuously in all modes.
  • When AC voltage is detected, a specific icon will be displayed on the screen.
  • Caution: Wires deeper than 2 inches (51mm), in conduit, or behind plywood shear walls may not be detected. Extreme caution is advised under these circumstances or whenever hot AC wires are present. Always turn off power when working near electrical wires.
  • Users should always verify the unit is in good working order before use by testing it in a known correctly wired socket or distribution board.
