Overview

The Nelson Mini Regulator (MR) and Mini Regulator Drain Check (MRDC) are devices designed for precise pressure regulation and system management in irrigation applications.

Function Description

Mini Regulator (MR): The MR is primarily designed for accurate pressure regulation. It ensures a consistent output pressure, which is crucial for maintaining the uniformity of sprinkler distribution patterns and optimizing water usage. The MR is identified by a gray inlet.

Mini Regulator Drain Check (MRDC): The MRDC is a patented combination device that integrates both a pressure regulator and a check valve. In addition to providing accurate pressure regulation, it features a check valve that prevents the irrigation system from draining down through the sprinkler when the system is shut off. This feature is particularly useful in preventing crop washout and maintaining system prime. The MRDC is identified by a blue inlet.

How They Work

Normal Pressure: When the system operates at adequate pressure, both the MR and MRDC regulate the pressure to their specified output.

Low Pressure: If the inlet pressure drops below the regulation threshold, neither device will regulate. In this scenario, the MR remains open, allowing flow, while the MRDC's check valve closes to prevent draining.

Draining After Shut Off: When the system is shut off and pressure drops to zero, the MR remains open, allowing any water in the line to drain through the sprinkler. In contrast, the MRDC's check valve closes, preventing the system from draining down through the sprinkler, thereby maintaining the prime of the system.

Usage Features

MRDC Applications:

  1. Portable Irrigation Systems: The MRDC is ideal for portable irrigation systems to eliminate crop washout. This occurs when partially pressurized sprinklers drain during system start-up and shut-down, leading to localized over-watering. The check valve feature prevents this drainage.
  2. Overhead Cooling of Apples and Other Crops: For overhead cooling systems that operate with frequent on-and-off cycles, the MRDC prevents the system from draining in between cycles. This ensures immediate water delivery upon restart and conserves water by preventing unnecessary drainage.
  3. Greenhouse Irrigation Systems: In greenhouses, where any dripping or drainage after shut-down can be detrimental to sensitive plants or lead to undesirable humidity levels, the MRDC ensures a clean shut-off, preventing post-irrigation dripping from sprinklers.
  4. Systems with Uneven Topography or High Friction Loss: For irrigation systems experiencing significant pressure gains or losses due to varied terrain or extensive piping, the MRDC ensures high uniformity and even flow across all sprinklers. Its pressure regulation capability compensates for these variations, providing consistent performance.

General Usage Notes:

  • Pressure Maintenance: Always maintain a minimum of 5 PSI above the nominal pressure rating of the regulator. This is critical to prevent severe distortion of sprinkler distribution patterns and decreased flow, ensuring optimal irrigation performance.
  • Flow Requirement: These devices require flow through them to regulate pressure. They are not designed for use in continuously static conditions where there is no water movement.

Maintenance Features

Checking System Pressure:

  • The Nelson Pressure Gauge Tap assembly can be used to check system operating pressures at the inlet of the MRDC. This allows for easy monitoring and verification that the system is operating within the specified pressure range.

Freezing Conditions:

  • It is crucial to remove the MRDC and drain the irrigation system during freezing conditions. This prevents potential damage to both the MRDC and the overall irrigation system from ice expansion. The product is explicitly not recommended for use in freezing conditions.

Inlet Plugging:

  • Partial plugging of the MRDC inlet can severely distort distribution patterns and decrease flow. Regular inspection and cleaning of the inlet are recommended to maintain optimal performance and uniformity.

Warranty Information

The Nelson Mini Regulator and Mini Regulator Drain Check are warranted for one year from the date of original sale.
