Overview

This document outlines the firmware update process for Nextbase Dash Cams, specifically the 222G model, using an SD card via a supplied USB cable. The instructions are designed to guide users through updating their dash cam's software to ensure optimal performance and access to the latest features.

Function Description

The Nextbase Dash Cam is a device designed to record video footage while driving, providing a record of events on the road. Firmware updates are crucial for these devices as they can introduce new functionalities, improve existing features, enhance stability, and resolve any known issues. This particular update method involves transferring a firmware file to the dash cam's SD card, which the device then uses to update its internal software. The process ensures that the dash cam operates with the most current and efficient programming available, contributing to its reliability as an in-car recording device.

Usage Features

The firmware update process itself is a key usage feature, enabling users to maintain their device. The instructions detail a step-by-step approach for both Windows and Mac users.

  1. Downloading the Firmware: The first step involves downloading the latest firmware version, identified as 'FW222GA' for the 222G model, from the Nextbase Support & Downloads page. This file is typically saved to the computer's downloads folder. It's important to note that this file is not meant to be opened directly on the computer.

  2. Copying the Firmware File:

    • For Windows users: Right-click on the downloaded .bin file (e.g., FWXXXX.bin) and select 'Copy' from the context menu.
    • For Mac users: CMD-click on the .bin file and select 'Copy' from the context menu. This action prepares the file for transfer to the dash cam's SD card.
  3. Preparing the Dash Cam:

    • Accessing Setup Menu: Users need to access the dash cam's Setup Menu. This is typically done by pressing the 'Menu' button twice when the camera is not actively recording.
    • Formatting the SD Card: Within the Setup Menu, users should navigate to the 'Format SD Card' option and press 'OK' to confirm. This step is crucial as it ensures the SD card is clean and ready to receive the new firmware file, minimizing potential conflicts or errors during the update.
  4. Connecting the Dash Cam to the Computer:

    • The dash cam is connected to the computer using the supplied USB cable.
    • Upon connection, the dash cam will display a 'PC Connection' screen. Users must select the 'Firmware Update' option by pressing 'OK'.
  5. Accessing the Dash Cam as a Storage Device:

    • Once connected, the dash cam should appear as a storage device named 'NEXTBASE' in File Explorer (Windows) or Finder (Mac).
    • Users then click on this 'NEXTBASE' drive to view the contents of the SD card.
  6. Pasting the Firmware File:

    • Within the 'NEXTBASE' drive (representing the SD card), users right-click (or CMD-click on Mac) in the white space and select 'Paste'. This action transfers the copied firmware file (FW222GA.bin) onto the SD card.
    • A critical note here is to ensure the file is not renamed during this process. If the file appears as FW222GA(1).bin or similar, the update will fail. The file name must remain exactly as downloaded.
  7. Initiating the Update:

    • After the file has been successfully copied to the SD card, the dash cam can be safely unplugged from the PC.
    • The dash cam will then shut down, and the Nextbase logo will appear, indicating it's ready for the next step.
    • Users then plug the dash cam back into their PC and select 'Power On' from the 'PC Connection' screen. The firmware update process should begin automatically. During this phase, a message like "Firmware Updating... Update takes approx 1 minute. Do not disconnect power!" will be displayed.
  8. Verifying the Update:

    • Once the update is complete, the dash cam will restart and again display the 'PC Connection' screen. Users should select 'Power On' to continue.
    • To verify the successful update, users navigate back to the Setup Menu (pressing 'Menu' twice), scroll to 'System Info', and press 'OK'. The displayed firmware version should reflect the newly installed update (e.g., Rxx.x).

Maintenance Features

The entire firmware update process is a core maintenance feature for the Nextbase Dash Cam. Regular updates ensure the device remains in optimal working condition, addressing potential bugs, improving performance, and enhancing security.

  • Proactive Problem Solving: Firmware updates often include fixes for previously identified issues, preventing potential malfunctions or improving the reliability of recordings.
