Do you have a question about the Nidec Leroy-Somer LSA 47.3 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The LSA 47.3 is a Low Voltage Alternator, specifically a 4-pole machine, designed for electricity generation, primarily in generator applications. It is manufactured by Leroy-Somer, a Nidec company, and comes with an installation and maintenance manual.

Function Description

The LSA 47.3 alternator is a machine without sliprings or revolving armature brushes, wound as "2/3 pitch" with 12 wires and Class H insulation. It features a field excitation system available in SHUNT, AREP, or PMG versions. The alternator is designed to produce electricity and is a sub-assembly delivered without a system of protection against short-circuits; protection must be provided by the generator's circuit-breaker, sized to interrupt the fault current.

Usage Features

  • Applications: Primarily designed for electricity production in generator sets.
  • Usage Restrictions: Operation is restricted to conditions (environment, speed, voltage, power, etc.) compatible with the nameplate characteristics.
  • Commissioning: The machine is factory-tested and set up. Before first use, ensure insulation is at least 1 megohm for the stator and 100,000 ohms for other windings. Drive speed must be correct and stable. For regreasable bearings, greasing is recommended at commissioning.
  • Connection: 12-wire stator allows for various terminal connections (Parallel Star, Series Star, Series Delta) to match operating voltage. Winding code is specified on the nameplate.
  • Safety: Personnel must wear appropriate PPE for mechanical and electrical hazards. During operation, do not allow anyone in front of air outlet guards. Do not allow children younger than 14 near air outlet guards. Alternators must not be put into service until the machines they are incorporated into comply with EC Directives.
  • Storage: Store away from humidity (< 90%). Check insulation after long storage. Avoid environments with significant vibration to prevent bearing marks.

Maintenance Features

  • Routine Checks: After approximately 20 hours of operation, check all fixing bolts, general machine state, and electrical connections.
  • Electrical Servicing: Use commercially available volatile degreasing agents. Avoid trichlorethylene, perchlorethylene, trichloroethane, or alkaline products. Perform cleaning at a station with a vacuum system. Dry windings with a dry cloth.
  • Mechanical Servicing: Do not clean with water or high-pressure washers. Degrease with a brush and detergent. Dust with an air gun. Clean or replace air inlet/outlet filters regularly. After cleaning, check winding insulation.
  • Bearings:
    • Permanently greased bearings: Approximate life of grease is 20,000 hours or 3 years.
    • Regreasable bearings (optional): Regreasing interval is 4000 hours in operation or every 6 months. Amount of grease: 45g for DE and NDE bearings. Lubricate front and rear bearings simultaneously. In dusty or high ambient temperature (> 40°C) environments, divide relubrication interval by two. Check compatibility before using a different grease.
  • Dismantling/Reassembly:
    • During warranty, operations should only be carried out in an approved workshop or factory to maintain warranty validity.
    • Machine should remain horizontal during handling.
    • Tools required: ratchet spanner + extension, torque wrench, flat spanners (8, 10, 18 mm), socket set (8, 10, 13, 16, 18, 21, 24, 30 mm), puller (U35 / U32/350).
    • When dismantling brackets, antifriction bearings, "O" ring seal, preloading (wavy) washer, and adhesive paste must be changed.
    • Rotor rebalancing is required if dismantling involves changing parts or rewinding.
  • Spare Parts: First maintenance parts kits are available for single and two-bearing machines, including bearings, washers, and seals. Complete crescents equipped with diodes, surge suppressors, and various AVR models (SHUNT R250, AREP D350, AREP D550) are also listed.
  • Disposal and Recycling: Leroy-Somer is committed to limiting environmental impact. Alternators are mainly constructed from iron, steel, and copper, which are recyclable. Electronic materials (AVR, current transformers, interference suppression modules, semiconductors), diode bridges, surge suppressors, and major plastic components require special treatment and must be separated before recycling. These materials should be entrusted to specialist recycling companies. Oil and grease must be treated as hazardous waste. The specified lifetime is 20 years, after which operation should cease.
