GENERAL
CMF2 furnaces are high quality, direct vent
furnaces used for manufactured housing,
recreational vehicle, and residential
applications.
These furnaces are offered in either power gas
(designated by PG) or power oil (designated
by PO) models. The power gas models are
designed for operation with either natural or
propane (LP) gas.
The CMF2 series is convertible from power oil to
power gas, and vice versa. Furthermore, the fi ring
rate of the CMF2 80 Convertible Series can be
changed using a certifi ed NORDYNE conversion
kit fi eld-installed by a qualifi ed service technician.
Refer to the “Firing Rate Conversion” section
later in these instructions for more information
on the fi ring rate change.
These furnaces are certifi ed to the UL307
standards (UL 307A for oil models; UL 307B for
gas models), and can be installed in a variety of
applications, as shown in Table 1. This furnace is
not to be used for temporary heating of buildings
or structures under construction.
WARNING:
This furnace must be installed by a qualifi ed
installing agency and in accordance with
applicable local codes and ordinances that
govern this type of equipment. Failure to
properly install the furnace, base assembly,
and venting system as described herein
may damage the equipment and/or the
home, can create a fi re or asphyxiation
hazard, violates U.S. listing requirements,
and will void the warranty. This furnace is
NOT approved for installation with split
system air conditioning. Use a NORDYNE
packaged air conditioning system.

Overview

This document describes the CMF2 80-PG Convertible (65, 75, and 85 KBTU/H Inputs) and CMF2 80-PO Convertible (65, 75, and 85 KBTU/H Inputs) counterflow gas or oil heating appliances, including their installation, operation, and maintenance.

Function Description:

The CMF2 series furnaces are high-quality, direct-vent heating appliances designed for use in manufactured housing, recreational vehicles, and residential applications. They are available in either power gas (PG) or power oil (PO) models. The power gas models are designed to operate with either natural gas or propane (LP) gas. A key feature is their convertibility between power oil and power gas, and their firing rate can be adjusted using a certified NORDYNE conversion kit installed by a qualified service technician. These furnaces are certified to UL307 standards (UL 307A for oil models; UL 307B for gas models). They are not approved for installation with split system air conditioning; NORDYNE packaged air conditioning systems should be used instead. The furnace is not intended for temporary heating of buildings or structures under construction.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Firing Rates: Convertible between 65,000, 75,000, and 85,000 BTU/hr inputs.
  • 75,000 BTUH Input (PG/PO): Output 56,000 BTU/H (PG), 60,000 BTU/H (PO).
  • Fuel Type: Power Gas (PG) models use natural gas or LP gas; Power Oil (PO) models use No. 2 fuel oil (No. 1 may be used in low temperatures).
  • Electrical: 120 Volt, Single Phase / 60 Hz.
  • Combustion Air: Can be drawn from outside (direct vent) or conditioned space (special CB-200A cottage base installations only).
  • Venting: Direct vent system required for most applications, typically using NORDYNE SRJ series roofjacks. Can also vent through existing chimneys for residential applications, adhering to specific material and sizing requirements (e.g., capable of withstanding 700°F, vertical chimney, connecting pipe slope of at least 45 degrees, total sloping pipe length not exceeding 6 feet).
  • Clearances to Adjacent Materials (Minimum):
    • Sides: 0" (Closet/Alcove)
    • Back: 0" (Closet/Alcove)
    • Front: 6" (Closet), 18" (Alcove) - with specific requirements for louvered doors if less than 6" front clearance.
    • Top: 17" (Closet/Alcove)
    • Vent: 6" (Closet/Alcove)
    • Duct within 3' from Furnace: 1/4" (Closet/Alcove)
    • Plenum: 1" (Closet/Alcove)
    • Roof Jack Barrel: 0" (Closet/Alcove)
  • Gas Piping (PG Series): Sized according to ANSI Z223.1/NFPA 54. Inlet gas line pressure: 5-7 in WC (natural gas), 11-13 in WC (LP gas). Manifold pressure: 3.5 in WC (natural gas), 10.0 in WC (LP gas).
  • Oil Piping (PO Series): 3/8" O.D. copper tubing for fuel line. One-line system recommended for vertical lift up to 8 feet; two-line system for lifts exceeding 8 feet.
  • Electrode Setting (PO Series): 5/32" gap, 5/16" above CL, 1/16" from nozzle.
  • CO2 Content (Flue Products): 8.0-9.0% (natural gas), 9.0-10.0% (LP gas).

Usage Features:

  • Direct Ignition: Gas models feature an automatic ignition device; no pilot light.
  • Convertibility: Easily switch between power oil and power gas, and adjust firing rates with a certified conversion kit.
  • Thermostat Control: Standard room thermostat connections for operation. Heat anticipator adjustment: 0.4 amps (oil), 0.9 amps (gas).
  • Fan Operation: FAN ON/OFF switch on the control box allows for automatic blower operation via thermostat or constant blower operation.
  • Safety Lockout: Equipped with safety features that will shut down the burner in case of issues like flame failure or centrifugal switch malfunction. Manual reset limits are included.
  • Air Quality Package (Accessory): Ventilaire III or IV packages can be installed to meet ventilation requirements by introducing outdoor air or exhausting moist/hot air from the attic.

Maintenance Features:

  • Air Filters: Should be inspected and cleaned monthly.
  • Combustion Air and Venting System: Inspect at the beginning and end of each heating season for deterioration, blockage, or damage. Clean as necessary.
  • Gas Burner Adjustment: Air shutter is factory pre-set but can be adjusted when converting firing rate. Proper adjustment ensures ample combustion air and quiet operation, preventing carbon monoxide production.
  • Oil Burner Electrode Setting: Electrodes are factory set but should be checked for proper positioning during installation to ensure good ignition.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: Comprehensive guide provided for both gas and oil furnaces, covering issues like burner motor not running, ignitor not heating up, main flame igniting but locking out, insufficient heat, and circulation blower not operating. Includes control module status indicators (flash codes) for gas furnaces and indicator light patterns for oil primary controls (Honeywell R7184 and Beckett 7505) to diagnose issues like lockout, recycle, and cad cell status.
  • Cad Cell Resistance Check (Oil Furnaces): Procedure to check cad cell resistance to diagnose flame sensing issues.
  • Important Safety Reminders: Always disconnect power before servicing. Only qualified personnel should service direct ignition systems. Never use a match or open flame to detect gas leaks. Ensure proper grounding and wiring. Do not use if submerged in water.
