Overview

This document describes the P94RD Series Single Package Air Conditioner, a self-contained outdoor unit designed for residential use. It is intended for ground-level installations and can be readily connected to a home's high-static duct system. The unit is pre-charged with R-410A refrigerant and is ready for installation without additional refrigerant charging, provided repairs do not necessitate evacuation and recharging.

Function Description:

The P94RD Series Air Conditioner is designed to provide cooling for residential spaces. It integrates all necessary components—compressor, condenser, evaporator, and blower—into a single outdoor cabinet. The unit is capable of connecting to both supply and return air ducts to circulate conditioned air throughout the home. It supports various thermostat configurations, including cooling-only and heat/cool thermostats, and can be integrated with optional electric heating kits for heating functionality.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Refrigerant: R-410A. The manual explicitly states not to use any other refrigerant.
  • Electrical Supply: The unit requires a dedicated branch circuit with appropriate fuse or circuit breaker sizing. It is designed for 208/230V operation, with factory wiring set for 230V. For 208V operation, a specific transformer terminal adjustment is required.
  • Control Circuit: Operates on a 24 VAC Class II control circuit.
  • Airflow: The unit's performance is dependent on proper duct system design and adequate airflow. Blower speed settings can be adjusted to optimize system performance and comfort, with specific airflow data provided in Table 3 (page 11) for factory settings.
  • Dimensions: Unit dimensions vary by model number. For example, models 018K, 024K, 030K, and 036K have a length of 49 inches, width of 35 inches, and height of 22.2 inches. Larger models like 060K have a length of 63 inches, width of 35 inches, and height of 38.2 inches. Detailed dimensions are provided in Figure 9 and Table 2 (page 10).
  • Duct Connections: The unit features openings for supply and return ducts, with sizes varying by tonnage. For 1.5, 2, 2.5, and 3 Ton models, both supply and return ducts are 12" diameter. For 3.5, 4, and 5 Ton models, the supply duct is 12" diameter and the return duct is 14" diameter (Figure 9, page 10).
  • Condensate Drainage: Equipped with a 3/4" NPT drain connection for condensate removal. A drain trap, shipped in the electrical compartment, must be installed to prevent water collection inside the unit.

Usage Features:

  • Outdoor Installation: Designed exclusively for outdoor ground-level installations, preferably on a concrete slab, slightly above grade level, and parallel to the home.
  • Duct System Compatibility: Can be connected to high-static duct systems. The manual emphasizes proper duct design, insulation, and sealing to prevent air loss and ensure adequate airflow.
  • Thermostat Control: Compatible with single-stage or two-stage heating thermostats, depending on installed accessories. The thermostat should be mounted about 5 feet above the floor on an inside wall, away from heat sources.
  • Start-Up Procedure: Includes a detailed start-up checklist and procedure, including verifying proper condensate drainage, checking for obstructions, sealing ductwork, verifying electrical connections, and ensuring the compressor runs for a minimum of 12 hours after initial startup.
  • Crankcase Heater: If equipped, a crankcase heater requires 24 hours of pre-heating before startup to prevent damage to the compressor.
  • Safety Features: Includes overcurrent protection (fuses or breakers) sized according to the unit rating label and local codes. High-pressure switches are integrated to protect the system from excessively high refrigerant pressures.

Maintenance Features:

  • Periodic Maintenance: Recommended for optimum performance and to minimize equipment failure. This requires certain mechanical skills and tools.
  • Coil Cleaning: Regular inspection and cleaning of the outdoor coil and top of the unit are necessary to keep them free from obstructions and debris.
  • Drainage System Check: The condensate drain system should be checked for proper installation and function.
  • Electrical Connections Check: All factory wiring and connections should be inspected to ensure they are secure and in accordance with wiring diagrams.
  • Filter Servicing: Homeowners should be instructed on filter servicing.
  • Refrigerant Charging (Repair Only): If repairs necessitate evacuation and recharging, it should only be performed by qualified, trained personnel thoroughly familiar with the equipment.
  • Access Panels: The unit features access panels for the blower, electrical controls, and compressor compartment, requiring specific clearances (24" for blower/electrical and compressor, 72" from top of unit) for servicing.

Safety Warnings:

The manual contains numerous warnings, including:

  • R-410A Refrigerant: DO NOT use any other refrigerant.
  • Qualified Personnel: Installation and servicing should only be performed by qualified, trained personnel.
  • Electrical Hazards: Disconnect all electrical power before servicing. Ensure proper grounding to prevent electrical shock, fire, or explosion.
  • Sharp Edges: Use caution when handling the appliance due to sharp metal edges.
  • Combustible Materials: Do not place combustible materials on or against the unit cabinet, or in its vicinity.
  • Furnace Damper: If installed with a furnace, a damper must be installed in the furnace base assembly to prevent cold air discharge around the heat exchanger, which could cause damage or asphyxiation.
