Section 060-INDP-111 System Description 2-85
BMC II BISYNC Operation, Administration, and Maintenance Guide BMCB001 and up
Internally, the BMC provides human-machine password protection that is
defined by the system administrator. The BMC password is a six-character
alphanumeric password.
In addition to the access level password, the BMC has three levels of
password protection which allow the System Administrator to limit access
within the BMC. The most restrictive level (Level one) limits most access.
Level 3 affords the most access. Priority can be assigned to individual BMC
commands. For User Sensitive information, the BMC uses single application
to single application communication links which are password protected and
limit utilization of a specific application to user specified applications.
Security is discussed in greater detail in the Command and Message Guide
section.
Download of Software
Since many of the operating programs are disk-based, the programs may be
downloaded from an authorized source under operator supervision. The
download of new software uses ASCII asynchronous communications
protocol. Nortel maintains a record of software for each operating site. A
port on the BMC is dedicated to the download function. Software may be
downloaded to the BMC because:
• A new program revision has been developed and the user wishes to take
advantage of the new software.
• An attempt to recover from a hard disk failure is unsuccessful and
software must be reinstalled on the system.
• The download function is to be tested.
For further information for downloading and the detailed procedures to
accomplish a download, refer to the Maintenance Procedures Guide section.
Test File
The Test File is transmitted from the HOC to the BMC when initiated by
manual terminal request at the HOC. The Test File consists of a 10-byte file
header and one 256-byte block sent from the HOC to the BMC. The Test File
is provided to aid in testing data transmission facilities, BMC hardware, and
the store and forward capabilities of the BMC.
Note: The test file is a 256 byte file. The HOC may have to reset to
Category A to properly receive this file. Consult with technical assistance
personnel for requirements.
The HOC sends the Test File to the BMC as a result of terminal input request.
The BMC stores the Test File on Disk and returns the identical file, with a
change of name, to the HOC when a Specific File Poll message for the Test
