away from the mouthpiece. Remember
not to touch the tip of the reed. There is a
ridge on the back of the reed which fits
into a slot on the mouthpiece. Slide the
reed into the slot as far as possible and
then release the ligature as shown. This
provides correct alignment every time.
The tip of the reed should now be aligned

Congratulations! You are the proud
owner of a Nuvo Dood and we hope it
will bring you many years of musical
fun and learning.
The Dood will help you to develop many
of the important skills needed to play a
single reed instrument such as the clarinet
or saxophone. Your instrument includes 2
synthetic Nuvo reeds which if looked
after, will last a long time.
Playing Your First Note
If you are a complete beginner you will
find it easier to use the number 1 reed to
start. After securing the reed as shown,
seal your lips around the mouthpiece and
breathe gently at first. Gradually increase
the pressure until you get your first note.
Try the note B – the fingering chart shows
where to put your fingers. You will have to
experiment quite a bit to make a pleasant
sound. If you don’t get a nice tone right
away, try changing the position of your
lips and putting the mouthpiece further
out of your mouth. Experimenting is fun
and is part of the learning process. If you
need some help, any clarinet teacher
should be able to give you some lessons.

'Play It Today' book and music from

Reeds
Your Dood uses the same reeds as the
Nuvo Clarinéo. Nuvo synthetic reeds
come in 3 dierent strengths. You might
also want to try an Eb clarinet reed
available at your local music shop. Try not
to chew your reed as it will not work if it is
not perfectly flat. The two reeds included
with your Dood are a No. 1 and a 1½. No.
1 is the softest and is suitable for a young
beginner. Later you can progress to the
1½ which is a little stier.
Your reeds are quite sensitive to
temperature so if your instrument or reed
is cold, you may want to warm it up by
dipping it in warm water for a few seconds
before you start. This will make it a bit
softer and easier to play. If you need
replacement reeds, please contact your
local music store.
Music for your Dood
Your Dood is tuned much like a recorder
and plays all the notes over a range of one
octave, plus a few extras! This means
there are hundreds of tunes you can play
and you can also have fun making up your
own tunes. If you compose a new tune
you’d like us to hear, send us a recording
or a video. We will consider adding your
tune to our Nuvo WindStars program for
other kids to enjoy.
Nuvo WindStars
To find more music that you can play solo
or with your friends go to
www.nuvo-windstars.com. Theres a great
selection of tunes with backing tracks and
you can make music with other Nuvo
instruments such as the Toot, jSax, jFlute
and Clarinéo.
Cleaning your Dood
Your Dood is 100% waterproof so it can
be cleaned frequently with warm soapy
water.

Overview

The Nuvo Dood 2.0 is a single-reed instrument designed to help users develop skills needed to play instruments like the clarinet or saxophone. It comes with two synthetic Nuvo reeds, which are durable if properly maintained.

Function Description:

The Dood 2.0 is designed for musical learning and fun. It allows users to play a range of notes over one octave, plus additional notes, enabling hundreds of tunes to be played. Users can also compose their own tunes and share recordings or videos with Nuvo WindStars for potential inclusion in their program. The instrument is tuned similarly to a recorder.

Usage Features:

  • Getting Started: For beginners, it is recommended to start with the No. 1 reed, which is the softest. The instrument includes both a No. 1 and a 1½ reed; the 1½ reed is stiffer and can be used as skills progress. Users can also try an Eb clarinet reed, available at local music shops.
  • Reed Installation: To install a reed, open the ligature, slide the reed up and away from the mouthpiece, being careful not to touch the tip. The reed has a ridge on its back that fits into a slot on the mouthpiece. Slide the reed into this slot as far as possible, then release the ligature. This ensures correct alignment, with the reed tip aligned with the mouthpiece tip.
  • Playing the First Note: After securing the reed, seal lips around the mouthpiece and breathe gently, gradually increasing pressure until a sound is produced. The fingering chart shows where to place fingers for specific notes, such as note B. Experimentation with lip position and mouthpiece placement is encouraged to achieve a pleasant sound. If a good tone isn't immediately achieved, adjusting lip position or mouthpiece depth can help.
  • Temperature Sensitivity: Reeds are sensitive to temperature. If the instrument or reed is cold, warming it in warm water for a few seconds before playing can make it softer and easier to play.
  • Music Resources: Additional music can be found at www.nuvo-windstars.com, including tunes with backing tracks. The Dood can be played solo or with other Nuvo instruments like the Toot, jSax, jFlute, and Clarinéo. A free "Play It Today" book and music can be downloaded from www.nuvo-instrumental.com for further assistance.
  • Adjustable Components: The Dood features an adjustable thumb rest for comfortable playing.
  • Mouthpiece Assembly: The mouthpiece is assembled to the body with the reed at the back, secured by the ligature and O-rings.
  • Fingering Chart: A comprehensive fingering chart is provided, illustrating finger positions for various notes (C, C#, Db, D, D#, Eb, E, F, F#, Gb, G, G#, Ab, A, A#, B, C, C#, D). The chart indicates "Fully Close" (finger covering the hole), "Half Open" (finger on the pad but not covering the hole), and "Open" (no finger on the hole).

Maintenance Features:

  • Reed Care: Avoid chewing on the reed, as it will not function correctly if it is not perfectly flat.
  • Cleaning: The Dood is 100% waterproof, allowing it to be cleaned frequently with warm soapy water.
  • Reed Replacement: If replacement reeds are needed, contact a local music store.
