NVX smart battery isolators are microprocessor-controlled dual battery isolators
used in dual battery systems. They are designed to be used as a solenoid priority
system to protect the start battery from excessive discharge, while allowing the auxiliary
battery to supply non-essential loads.
The dual sensing smart isolators have the added feature of allowing charge both
ways where the auxiliary battery may also be charged by an external source such
as Solar panels or an external AC battery charger. They will also allow the start
battery to be charged by the external source once the auxiliary battery reaches
13.2 volts to help top up the start battery.

Overview

The NVX Smart Battery Isolator (models XSBi80, XSBi200, XSBi500) is a microprocessor-controlled dual battery isolator designed for use in dual battery systems, primarily in multi-battery applications. Its core function is to protect the start battery from excessive discharge while allowing the auxiliary battery to power non-essential loads.

Function Description:

The Smart Battery Isolator operates as a solenoid priority system. It continuously monitors the main starter battery's voltage. When the starter battery voltage reaches 13.2 volts, the isolator's solenoid automatically connects the auxiliary battery to the charging system, allowing it to be charged. Conversely, if the entire system voltage drops below 12.7 volts, the solenoid opens, isolating the starter battery from the auxiliary battery. This mechanism ensures that the start battery is never drained, guaranteeing reliable vehicle starting.

A key feature of these isolators is their dual sensing capability. This allows for charging in both directions. The auxiliary battery can be charged by an external source, such as solar panels or an external AC battery charger. Furthermore, once the auxiliary battery reaches 13.2 volts, the isolator will allow the external source to also top up the start battery, providing comprehensive charging management.

The device includes a manual override function. By plugging in and pressing a manual start switch, users can temporarily link the two batteries together for 60 seconds, which can be useful in specific situations.

Important Technical Specifications:

The NVX Smart Battery Isolators are available in three models, each with different continuous current ratings:

  • XSBi80: 80 Amp continuous power
  • XSBi200: 200 Amp continuous power
  • XSBi500: 500 Amp continuous power

All models operate at a 12V system voltage.

  • Auto-on voltage: > 13.2V (for all models)
  • Auto-off voltage: < 12.7V (for all models)
  • Turn on delay: 5 seconds (for all models)
  • Turn off delay: 10 seconds (for all models)
  • Standby current: < 5mA (for all models)

Usage Features:

  • Safe Auxiliary Battery Charging: Provides a secure method to charge the auxiliary battery while driving, preventing overcharge or discharge of the start battery.
  • Cost-Effective Protection: Offers an economical solution to prevent a flat start battery, avoiding potential inconvenience and repair costs.
  • Automatic Operation: The microprocessor control automatically manages the connection and disconnection of batteries based on voltage thresholds, requiring minimal user intervention during normal operation.
  • Manual Override: The optional manual start switch allows for temporary linking of batteries, providing flexibility in emergency or specific operational scenarios.
  • Dual Sensing Capability: Enables charging of both the start and auxiliary batteries from external sources connected to the auxiliary battery, such as solar panels or AC chargers, enhancing versatility for various power setups.
  • Fault Indication: The LED on the manual switch provides visual fault codes to notify the operator of potential issues:
    • Code 1 (2 flashes): Indicates an Over-Voltage condition (> 15.5 V).
    • Code 2 (3 flashes): Indicates a Voltage drop condition (< 12.7 V).

Maintenance Features:

While the manual does not explicitly detail "maintenance features" in the traditional sense, the design and installation guidelines contribute to the longevity and proper functioning of the device:

  • Robust Grounding: Emphasizes the importance of properly grounding the auxiliary battery negative to the vehicle chassis and connecting the isolator's ground terminal to a good chassis ground. This ensures correct switching voltage and reliable operation. Removing paint for a good ground connection is specifically recommended.
  • Fuse/Circuit Breaker Protection: Recommends installing a fuse holder or circuit breaker on both the power wire going into the isolator from the main battery and the power wire going out of the isolator to the secondary battery. This protects the system from overcurrents and potential damage to the isolator and batteries. (Note: Circuit breaker and fuses are not supplied with the unit).
  • Clear Wiring Diagrams: Standard and dual sensing wiring diagrams are provided to guide correct installation, minimizing errors and ensuring optimal performance.
  • Self-Monitoring: The built-in fault indication system allows for quick identification of common electrical issues (over-voltage or voltage drop), aiding in timely troubleshooting and preventing further system damage. The LED may stay ON for a period after the vehicle is turned OFF, which is normal behavior before a fault might be indicated.

The NVX Smart Battery Isolator series offers a reliable and intelligent solution for managing dual battery systems, ensuring power availability and protection for both essential and non-essential loads.
