Questions and Answers

Overview

This document serves as a Quick Start Guide for the Olympus SP-310 and SP-350 digital cameras, providing essential information for initial setup, basic operation, image review, and data transfer. The guide is structured to walk users through the fundamental steps of using their new camera, from unboxing to transferring photos to a computer.

Function Description

The Olympus SP-310 and SP-350 are digital cameras designed for capturing still images. They offer a range of basic photographic functions, including automatic exposure, focusing, and flash control, making them suitable for everyday photography. The cameras are capable of storing images digitally, which can then be reviewed on the camera's monitor or transferred to a computer for further editing, storage, or sharing.

Usage Features

The guide outlines several key usage features:

  • Getting Started:

    • Attaching the Strap: The first step involves attaching the camera strap, which is crucial for secure handling and preventing accidental drops. The guide illustrates how to thread the strap through the eyelets on both the SP-310 and SP-350 models.
    • Inserting the Battery: Proper battery insertion is detailed, showing the correct orientation and placement within the battery compartment. The camera uses a Lithium Battery Pack (CR-V3).
    • Setting the Date and Time: Users are instructed to set the mode dial to "AUTO" and power on the camera. The guide then explains how to navigate the menu ([MODE MENU] > [SETUP] > []) to adjust the date and time settings, ensuring accurate timestamps for captured images. An operation guide with a visual representation of the date format (YYYY.MM.DD) and time is provided.
  • Taking a Picture:

    • Zoom Function: The camera features a zoom lever for adjusting the focal length. The guide illustrates how to "Zoom Out" and "Zoom In," allowing users to compose their shots effectively.
    • Focusing: To achieve sharp images, users are advised to place the AF (Autofocus) target mark over their subject on the monitor. Pressing the shutter button halfway activates the autofocus and exposure lock, indicated by a green lamp. This ensures that the subject remains in focus even if the camera's position slightly changes before the final shot.
    • Capturing the Image: Once focus is locked, pressing the shutter button completely takes the picture. Visual cues differentiate between "Pressed Halfway" (for focus lock) and "Pressed Completely" (for image capture).
  • Reviewing or Erasing a Picture:

    • Quick View: The "QUICK VIEW" button allows immediate display of the last picture taken.
    • Closer Look: Users can pull the zoom lever (T or W) to zoom in or out on a reviewed image. Pressing the button returns the image to its original size. The arrow pad (up, down, left, right) enables scrolling around the magnified image. Pressing the "QUICK VIEW" button again returns the camera to shooting mode.
    • Erasing Pictures: To delete an unwanted image, users first display the picture, then press the "erase" button. A confirmation prompt ([YES]/[NO]) appears, and selecting [YES] and pressing permanently deletes the image.
  • Transferring Images:

    • Software Installation: Before transferring images, the Olympus Master software must be installed on a computer. The guide provides instructions for both Windows (clicking the "OLYMPUS Master" button) and Macintosh (double-clicking the "Installer" icon) operating systems. Users are encouraged to register their camera online.
    • Connecting the Camera: The camera is connected to the computer using the included USB cable. The camera's monitor will automatically turn on upon connection. Users then select "PC" on the camera's monitor and press the button, allowing the computer to recognize the camera as a removable storage drive.
    • Image Transfer: Once connected, opening Olympus Master on the computer should display the "[Transfer Images]" window. Users can then select the desired images and click the "[Transfer Images]" button to initiate the transfer. If the window does not appear automatically, users are guided to click the "Transfer Images" icon on the Olympus Master main menu, followed by the "From Camera" icon.

Maintenance Features

While the quick start guide does not explicitly detail maintenance features, it implicitly suggests good practices through its instructions:

  • Proper Handling: The emphasis on attaching the strap implies the importance of secure handling to prevent physical damage.
  • Software Updates/Support: The mention of "www.olympusamerica.com/support" and registering the camera suggests that users should refer to online resources for potential software updates, troubleshooting, and extended support, which are integral to maintaining camera functionality and performance.
  • Battery Care: Instructions for correct battery insertion hint at the need for careful handling of the battery to ensure proper contact and longevity.
  • Data Management: The image transfer section encourages users to regularly offload images, which is a form of data maintenance, preventing the camera's memory from becoming full and ensuring that valuable photos are backed up.

The camera diagram provides a visual overview of various components, including the multi-connector, DC-IN jack, connector cover, microphone, flash, strap eyelets, shutter button, lens, self-timer lamp/AF illuminator, zoom lever, hot shoe (SP-350 only), power button, orange lamp, mode dial, flash mode button, erase button, AEL button/custom button, print button, viewfinder, green lamp, DISP./GUIDE button, QUICK VIEW button, OK/MENU button, monitor, speaker, arrow pad, tripod socket, battery compartment lock, and battery compartment cover. This comprehensive labeling aids users in identifying and understanding the physical controls and ports of the camera, which is essential for both operation and basic troubleshooting.
