Module 3. Omni Operations
3.1. New User Training
Training New Players: Training new players properly on how to walk on the Omni before they
enter VR with the Omni is crucial to a good experience. Giving the proper verbal instructions has
a major impact on a novice user’s ability to walk properly on the Omni, which determines the
quality and fun of his or her Omni experience.

Training Procedure: Through years of experience of getting new players in and out of the Omni,
we have developed a highly effective procedure and script to teach new players how to walk on
the Omni. Practice and memorize this training script for novice players (see Appendix A) and pay
extra attention to the following important steps:
Clean the Omni Base before each use with a cloth.
Have the Harness back straps loosened before a new player enters the Omni.
Adjust the Ring height so that the Harness is positioned slightly above the player’s waist.
Feed the leg straps to the player through his legs.
Once the player is strapped in, pull the back straps for good support.
Stand next to the player, not in front of the player, to demonstrate the walking movement.
Have the player “Hold onto the ring with both hands” before taking first steps.
Show and tell the player to “Take one step forward and put your weight on your forward
foot. Let it slide back by gravity. Be sure to lean forward into your step.”
Hold the metal Harness frame with your hand and push the frame forward while asking the
player to keep walking forward.
At this stage, most players will be leaning forward excessively. Ask the player to “Now look
up and keep walking”, which will help straighten the player’s back.
Pull the back straps one more time for extra support.
Give the player the gun or controllers to practice walking without holding the Ring.
For average users: only focus on forward walking; do not teach backwards walking and
strafing.
For skilled users: explain backwards walking and strafing; explain how the Harness needs to
be in the back of the Ring to recognize backwards and strafing movement.
Ensure the player is not shuffling his feet, leaning backwards (not putting his body weight on
his forward foot), or leaning excessively forward.
Continue to train the player until he is able to walk on the Omni properly and comfortably;
do not stop the training prematurely.
