Do you have a question about the Omron FinsGateway and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The FinsGateway Modem Module is an add-on software designed to facilitate remote communication for FinsGateway. It enables users to quickly and easily develop applications for remote PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) data acquisition using a modem.

System Requirements

To operate the Modem Module, the environment must support FinsGateway. The following system specifications are recommended:

  • CPU: Pentium 200MHz or higher.
  • RAM: 64MB or higher.
  • OS: Microsoft® Windows NT, Windows95, or Windows98.
  • Software: FinsGateway Ver2.0 or higher.
  • Modem: Modem for Windows.

Setting the PLC Modem

Communications Settings for the PLC Modem: Unlike computer modems, which can automatically detect communication settings when an AT command is sent, PLC modems cannot. This is because a PLC is not a computer and does not send AT commands. Therefore, the communication settings for the PLC modem must be manually configured to match those of the computer modem and the PLC.

Procedure for Setting PLC Modem:

  1. Connect: Plug the PLC modem into the COM port of the computer.
  2. Access Setup Utility: Click on the Start button, navigate to Programs > FinsGateway > PLC Modem Setup.
  3. Select COM Port: In the "Receive Modem Setup" dialog, select the appropriate COM port for the modem from the "COM Port" box.
  4. Configure Communications Settings: Select the communication settings in the dialog to match those of the PLC. The default settings are: Baud Rate: 9600bps, Data Bits: 7, Stop Bit: 1, Parity: Even.
  5. Apply Settings: Click the [Set] button.
  6. Disconnect and Connect to PLC: Once the PLC modem setting is complete, unplug the modem from the computer and plug it into the PLC.

Serial Communications Driver Settings:

  1. Exit PLC Reporter: Ensure PLC Reporter is not running.
  2. Access Setup Utility: Click on the Start button, navigate to Programs > FinsGateway > Serial Communications Setup.
  3. Add Phone Line: Click the "Communications Line" tab in the "COM1 Serial Unit Properties" dialog and select the check box of the COM port corresponding to the modem to add the phone line.
  4. Close Dialog: Click [OK] to close the dialog.
  5. Set Network Address: If necessary, set the network address for the newly added phone line.

Operation

Registering Telephone Numbers: To identify each destination modem and PLC, a telephone number must be registered.

Procedure for Registering Telephone Numbers:

  1. Access FgwTapiCaller: Click on the Start button, navigate to Programs > FinsGateway > FgwTapiCaller.
  2. Select Phone Line Type: Click the "Dialing Properties" button. In the "Dialing Properties" dialog, select either "Tone dialing" or "Pulse dialing" to set the dialing type.
  3. Enter Destination Information: In the telephone number setup dialog, type the name and telephone number of the destination to call. Commas (,), or hyphens (-) can be used in the telephone number box for easier identification.
  4. Modem Settings: Click the "Modem Setup" button in the telephone number setup dialog to open the modem settings dialog. Select the modem in the "Modem to use" field and configure the communication settings to match those of the remote PLC.
  5. Unit Setup: Click the "Unit setup" button in the telephone number setup dialog to start the modem settings dialog. Select the COM port to which the modem is connected.
  6. Confirm and Finish: Confirm that the new telephone number appears in the telephone numbers dialog. Click [OK] to finalize the telephone number setup, or [Cancel] to discard the settings and quit.

Serial Communications Driver Settings (Dialing):

  1. Dial Destination: After registering the telephone number, click the [Dial] button in FgwTapiCaller to initiate dialing. The line status dialog will appear and then minimize automatically upon successful connection. This allows monitoring of the status and performing one-shot communications with a remote PLC.

Closing the Line:

  1. Hang Up: Click the [Hang up] button in the FgwTapiCaller.
  2. Manual Disconnect: Alternatively, the line can be closed by clicking the "Disconnect" button in the line status dialog.

Caution

Communications Settings: Some modems have fixed settings of 10 bits for character bits. Users must select one of the following four settings for communication:

  • 1 fixed, 7 Data bits, Even Parity, 1 Stop bit, 10 Character bits
  • 1 fixed, 7 Data bits, Odd Parity, 1 Stop bit, 10 Character bits
  • 1 fixed, 7 Data bits, None Parity, 2 Stop bits, 10 Character bits
  • 1 fixed, 8 Data bits, None Parity, 1 Stop bit, 10 Character bits

It is crucial to confirm that the communication settings of the computer and the PLC match, with the exception of speed. Refer to the PLC manual for instructions on setting the PLC's communication settings.

Speed Setting: The speed for the computer can be set via the Modem Module's communication settings, while the PLC modem's speed is set using the PLC modem settings utility. Speed settings may vary between different modems.

  • Computer - Modem: 19200 bps
  • Modem - Modem: 33600 bps
  • Modem - PLC: 9600 bps

Connecting the PLC Modem: A special cable is required to connect the modem to the PLC. The cable included with the modem is suitable for connecting to a computer but not a PLC. The cable should be prepared according to the provided figures. For detailed wiring information, refer to the modem and PLC manuals.

Connector Hood (FG) Pinout:

Modem 25pin PLC CPU unit 9 pin
1 FG 1
2 SD 2 SD
3 RD 3 RD
4 RS 4 RS
5 CS 5 CS
7 SG 9 SG
6 DR
20 ER

Send the AT Command: The PLC modem setup utility might not function correctly with older modems. In such cases, AT commands must be sent to configure the modem. Any AT command can be sent using the PLC modem setup utility. Refer to the modem manual for specific setting details.

  • Set number of rings for auto answer (e.g., 1 ring): ATS0=1
  • Save settings in non-volatile RAM (e.g., to profile 0): AT&W0
  • Select profile to load when modem is turned on (e.g., profile 0): AT&Y0

Flow control or CD/DR/ER signal control settings might be necessary for the modem. Consult the modem manual to determine the appropriate AT commands.

Troubleshooting

Is the equipment turned on? Confirm that both the modem and the PLC are powered on.

Is the equipment all connected? Verify that the modems are connected to the computer and the PLC, and that the modem and telephone lines are properly wired. Refer to the modem manual for wiring instructions.

Is it the right cable? A special cable is required to connect the PLC and the modem. Ensure the correct cable is used.

Is the right type selected for the telephone line? Confirm that the correct telephone line type (tone dialing or pulse dialing) is selected.

Is the PLC modem set? The PLC modem must be configured as it will not work with default settings. Settings may be erased if the modem has been off for an extended period, so re-configure if necessary.

Is the telephone number right? Verify that the Modem Module is dialing the correct telephone number.

Do the communications settings of the PLC and the modem match? Confirm that the communication settings for both the PLC and the modem are identical.

Are the modem settings right?

  • If multiple modems are installed, confirm that the correct modem is selected.
  • Verify that the modem is connected to the correct COM port.
  • Ensure that the COM port for the internal modem matches the settings.
