Overview

The OMRON G3PA-(VD) is a series of power solid-state relays designed for various industrial applications, offering compact size and robust performance. These relays are characterized by their extremely thin design, integrating a heat sink for efficient thermal management and enabling downsizing.

Function Description

The G3PA-(VD) series functions as a power solid-state relay, controlling AC loads with a DC or AC input signal. It utilizes phototriac couplers for isolation between input and output. The series includes models with and without zero-cross function, which helps to reduce noise and extend the life of the load by switching the output when the AC voltage crosses zero. Some models are specifically designed for 3-phase loads, and the power element cartridges are replaceable, allowing for easier maintenance and extended product life.

Important Technical Specifications

The G3PA-(VD) series offers a wide range of output load capabilities and input voltage options.

  • Output Load:

    • Load Voltage: Models are available for 19 to 264 VAC (50/60 Hz), 150 to 440 VAC (50/60 Hz), and 180 to 528 VAC (50/60 Hz).
    • Load Current: The series covers a broad range from 0.1 A to 60 A, with specific models handling 10 A, 20 A, 30 A, 40 A, 50 A, and 60 A.
    • Inrush Current: The relays are designed to withstand significant inrush currents, with values up to 440 A (60 Hz, 1 cycle) for higher current models.
    • Output ON Voltage Drop: Typically 1.6 V (RMS) max. for lower voltage models and 1.8 V (RMS) max. for higher voltage models.
    • Leakage Current: Ranges from 5 mA max. (at 120 VAC) to 20 mA max. (at 400 VAC), depending on the model and load voltage.
    • I²t: Ranges from 260 A²S to 810 A²S.
  • Input Voltage:

    • DC Input: 5 to 24 VDC, with a voltage range of 4 to 30 VDC. Input current impedance is 7 mA max. or 20 mA max.
    • AC Input: 24 VAC, with a voltage range of 19.2 to 26.4 VAC. Input current impedance is 1.4 kΩ ±20%.
    • Must Operate Voltage: 4 VDC max. for DC input models, 19.2 VAC max. for AC input models, and 9.6 VDC max. for higher voltage DC input models (e.g., G3PA-420B-VD).
    • Must Release Voltage: 1 VDC min. for DC input models and 4.8 VAC min. for AC input models.
  • Isolation and Dielectric Strength:

    • Isolation Method: Phototriac coupler.
    • Dielectric Strength: 4,000 VAC, 50/60 Hz for 1 min, ensuring high insulation between input and load.
    • Insulation Resistance: 100 MΩ min. (at 500 VDC).
  • Environmental Ratings:

    • Operating Temperature: -30°C to 80°C (with no icing or condensation).
    • Storage Temperature: -30°C to 100°C (with no icing or condensation).
    • Ambient Humidity: 45% to 85% operating.
    • Vibration Resistance: Malfunction: 10 to 55 Hz, 0.75-mm double amplitude (mounted to DIN rail).
    • Shock Resistance: Malfunction: 300 m/s² (mounted to DIN rail).
  • Compliance: Conforms to VDE 0160 (finger protection), VDE 0805, IEC 950. Approved by UL, CSA, and VDE. Conformance to EN55011 is possible with a capacitor connected to the load power supply.

Usage Features

  • Mounting Flexibility: The G3PA-(VD) relays can be mounted via screws or on a DIN rail, offering versatility in installation.
  • Close Mounting: Close mounting is possible for linking terminals, which is beneficial for space-saving, though specific models (e.g., G3PA-260B-VD) may have limitations. When close mounting up to three units, the load current must be reduced by 10% for G3PA-210B-VD, -220B-VD, -240B-VD, and by 20% for other models. For four or more units, a minimum clearance of 10 mm between each SSR is required.
  • Vertical Mounting: For vertical mounting, the load current must be 30% lower than the rated one. A distance of 3 cm or more between the G3PA (especially the SSR on the upper side) and the duct is recommended.
  • Horizontal Mounting: Screw or DIN track mounting is possible, with horizontal mounting to ground. For horizontal mounting, a distance of 80 mm between the upper SSR and the lower SSR should be maintained.
  • Indicator: An operation indicator and temperature indicator are included for easy monitoring of the relay's status.
  • Linking Terminal: Linking terminals are provided for connecting multiple SSRs, simplifying wiring in multi-unit installations.
  • Noise Terminal Voltage: Conformance to EN55011 is possible if a capacitor is connected to the load power supply.

Maintenance Features

  • Replaceable Power Element Cartridges: A key maintenance feature is the replaceable power element cartridge (G32A-A Power Device Cartridge). This allows for easy replacement of the triac circuitry if it malfunctions due to excessive current, without needing to disconnect the wiring from the G3PA unit.
  • Temperature Indicator: The temperature indicator on the power device cartridge changes from pink to red if the triac circuitry has malfunctioned, signaling the need for replacement.
  • Special Tool for Cartridge Replacement: For specific models (G3PA-210B-VD/-220B-VD), a special tool is provided to extract the cartridge, simplifying the replacement process. For other models, screws secure the cartridge.
  • Silicone Grease Application: When mounting a new power device cartridge, it is crucial to apply silicone grease (provided with the G32A-A) to the entire surface of the heat radiator. This improves heat radiation efficiency and ensures proper operation.
  • Cleanliness: Before mounting, ensure there is no dust or wire pieces on the heat radiator of the G32A-A or the G3PA to prevent malfunctions.
  • Power Off During Replacement: Always turn off the power supply when replacing the cartridge to prevent malfunction or damage.
  • Terminal Cover: The terminal cover should be attached after maintenance to prevent accidents due to electric shock.
