Figure 1. Remove the cover plate that holds the focus knob
shaft assembly to the rack and pinion focuser by removing the
two Phillips-head screws
Figure 3. There is a small at spring intended to maintain
tension of the focus knob assembly shaft against the rack
gear of the drawtube. Because this connection is greased you
may nd the at spring stuck to the focuser housing as shown
in Figure 2 or in the cover as shown in Figure 3a. Carefully
remove it and set it aside. It will help to take note of the
orientation of the spring as you will need to set it back in the
same position when reassembling.

Focuser Disassembly and Component Handling

Remove Focuser Cover Plate

Remove the cover plate holding the focus knob shaft assembly with two Phillips-head screws.

Remove Drawtube Assembly

Lift the drawtube assembly from the focuser housing by grasping the top ring and pulling it outward.

Handle Flat Spring

Carefully remove and set aside the small flat spring that maintains tension, noting its orientation.

Install Shim Felt Strips and Reassemble Focuser

Apply Felt Strips to Focuser Housing

Apply two felt strips on opposite sides inside the focuser housing to stabilize the tube.

Install New Focus Knob Assembly

Place the new focus knob shaft assembly on the focuser, align gears, and attach the flat spring.

Reinstall Cover Plate

Reseat the cover plate and retighten Phillips head screws, alternating screws for even tightening.
