Usage Features:

  • Wiring Configurations: The manual provides detailed diagrams for various wiring configurations, including series and parallel connections for single and multiple speakers (up to four speakers) with dual 1, 2, or 4 ohm voice coils, to achieve specific impedance loads (e.g., 1 ohm, 2 ohm, 4 ohm) for amplifiers. It also illustrates configurations for using two amplifiers with a single speaker.
  • Enclosure Building: Guidance is provided on building both sealed and vented enclosures.
    • Sealed Enclosures: Offer high power handling, great transient response, tolerance to minor enclosure size variation, ease of construction, and a smooth roll-off (12dB/octave). Disadvantages include requiring a woofer with long excursion for better low bass frequency response, lower sensitivity than ported enclosures, and the woofer not being in an ideal cooling environment when using high power and small enclosures.
    • Vented Enclosures: Offer increased output around vented tuning, higher power handling above the port tuning frequency, extended frequency response, better magnet cooling, and handles higher bass frequencies with less distortion. Disadvantages include less transient response than sealed boxes, midrange sound coming from inside the enclosure, potential for port turbulence and coloration, loss of cone movement control below vent tuning, and lower power handling below the port tuning frequency.
  • Enclosure Details: Parameters are listed for conventional applications, recommending 0.75" MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard). Enclosures are NET box volumes, and speaker/port displacement must be calculated into the volume. Gross volume is the sum of NET volume and displacement.
  • Subsonic Filter: A subsonic filter is always recommended and adjusted specifically for vented box designs.
  • Mounting: The baffle board (woofer mounting plate) should be no less than 1". If the woofer mounting is recessed, a minimum of two 3/4" plates together should be used. MDF is recommended for sealing the inside of the enclosure. The woofer should face up or down only in sealed enclosures.

Maintenance Features:

  • Troubleshooting Guide: A comprehensive table helps diagnose common issues:
    • No Sound: Check amplifier fuses, turn-on lead, signal lead, gain control, source unit volume, and clean contacts on fuse holders.
    • Amplifier Overload LED Illuminated: Check speaker for short or amplifier for overheating.
    • Check Impedance with Ohm Meter: If no reading, replace speaker.
    • Speaker Not Moving Freely: If speaker won't move, replace speaker.
    • Speaker Rattling Noise: Tighten mounting screws, check enclosure construction for debris, correct speaker polarity.
    • No Sound from One Coil: Check speaker leads for short circuits or open connections. Reverse left and right speaker leads to determine if issue is with speaker.
    • Speaker Distorting at High Volume Levels: Confirm speaker load impedance capabilities for the amplifier, verify proper load impedance with an OHM meter, and select low-pass setting.
  • Warranty: Orion warrants the product against defects in material and workmanship for one (1) year from the date of original purchase from an Authorized Orion Dealer.

    • Thoroughly investigate vehicle layout before drilling or cutting, especially near gas tanks, lines, hydraulic lines, electrical components, and wiring.
    • Securely attach the system to prevent damage from accidents or aggressive driving.
    • Avoid mounting where wire connections are unprotected or subject to pinching/damage.
    • Disconnect battery ground cable before making electrical connections (unless vehicle has an anti-theft code, in which case refer to owner's manual).
    • Ensure source unit and other equipment are off when connecting input terminals.
    • Replace fuses only with identical amperage.
    • Avoid installing where exposed to excessive heat, moisture, dust, or physical impact.
    • Ensure terminals are connected to proper inputs/outputs.
    • Do not run wiring outside the vehicle or where it can be damaged. Use existing wire channels, sills, panels, and molding strips for safety and neat appearance.
    • California Proposition 65 Warning: Product may expose users to chemicals including DEHP, known to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm. More information at www.P65warnings.ca.gov.
