Do you have a question about the Otto Bock Taleo Adjust 1C56 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The Ottobock 1C56 Taleo Adjust prosthetic foot is designed for lower limb exoprosthetic fittings, offering a stepless heel height adjustment from 0 mm to 70 mm, allowing users to wear shoes with various heel heights. For sizes 27 and 28, the maximum heel height is limited to 25 mm.

Function Description:

The prosthetic foot incorporates carbon and polymer spring elements that provide perceptible plantar flexion at heel strike, facilitating a natural rollover motion, and delivering high energy return. A removable heel wedge is included to absorb heel strike forces. This component is compatible with Ottobock's modular system, though its functionality with components from other manufacturers that use compatible modular connectors has not been tested.

Important Technical Specifications:

The product is recommended for mobility grades 2 (restricted outdoor walkers) and 3 (unrestricted outdoor walkers). Spring stiffness varies based on body weight and load level, as detailed in the following table:

Body weight [kg] Low load level Medium load level
Up to 51 1 2
52 to 58 2 3
59 to 67 3 4
68 to 77 4 5
78 to 88 5 6
89 to 100 6 7
101 to 115 7

The prosthetic foot has a maximum lifetime of 3 years, depending on the patient's activity level. The footshell and protective sock are wear parts subject to normal wear and tear.

Environmental Conditions:

  • Allowable:
    • Temperature range: -10 °C to +45 °C
    • Moisture: Relative humidity 20% to 90%, non-condensing
    • Chemicals/liquids: Fresh water as dripping water, occasional contact with salty air (e.g., near the ocean)
    • Solids: Dust
  • Prohibited:
    • Chemicals/moisture: Salt water, perspiration, urine, acids, soapsuds, chlorine water
    • Solids: Highly liquid-binding particles (e.g., talcum), dust in high concentrations (e.g., construction site), sand
  • Storage and Transport:
    • Temperature range: -20 °C to +60 °C
    • Relative humidity: 20% to 90%
    • No mechanical vibrations or impacts

Usage Features:

The static alignment of the Taleo Adjust is a two-stage process, both stages must be completed to set the minimum and maximum heel height. Ottobock recommends using the L.A.S.A.R. Posture system to check prosthesis alignment during both stages.

  1. Without footwear: Perform static alignment with the prosthetic foot in maximum dorsiflexion. Adjustments are made using set screws.
  2. With everyday footwear: Perform static alignment with the everyday footwear. Adjust the sagittal plane angle by changing the heel height (0 mm to 70 mm), not by using the set screws. Using the set screws will alter the minimum/maximum adjustable heel height.

For users requiring greater safety (e.g., mobility grade 2), the foot can be shifted approximately 1 cm anteriorly during bench alignment, which extends the forefoot and enhances knee securing.

Heel Wedge Replacement:

The heel wedge's hardness, indicated by its color (see Fig. 3), can be exchanged to adapt the prosthetic foot's behavior during heel strike and mid-stance heel contact. Ottobock recommends starting with the preinstalled heel wedge. To replace, bend the prosthetic foot slightly, remove the old wedge, align the new wedge with the Ottobock lettering upright and the tip pointing anteriorly, then insert the tip into the front part of the frame and push the wedge into the rear part of the frame.

Setting Heel Height:

The heel height can be smoothly adjusted from 0 mm to 70 mm (maximum 25 mm for sizes 27 and 28). This adjustment is performed while seated.

  1. Observe how the prosthesis feels when walking barefoot.
  2. Sit down.
  3. Note the angle of the prosthetic leg when seated barefoot with the prosthetic foot flat on the floor.
  4. Put on the desired shoes.
  5. Caution: Do not put weight on the prosthesis during heel height adjustment due to the risk of injury from the freely movable prosthetic foot.
  6. Unlock the ankle joint: Push the lock axis medially until it stops (see Fig. 7). The ankle joint is now movable.
  7. Push the tip of the prosthetic foot towards the sole (plantar flexion) until it stops.
  8. Place the prosthetic leg on the floor, ensuring the shoe is flat and the prosthetic leg is at the same angle as when seated barefoot.
  9. Lock the ankle joint: Push the laterally protruding lock axis until it stops (see Fig. 8). The ankle joint is now locked and can bear weight.
  10. Hold onto a suitable object, stand up, and test if the adjusted heel height is appropriate.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning: Clean the product with a damp, soft cloth, dry it with a soft cloth, and allow residual moisture to air dry.
  • Regular Inspection: After the first 30 days of use, perform a visual inspection and functional test of the prosthetic components. During regular inspections, check the prosthesis for signs of wear and its function.
  • Annual Safety Inspections: Conduct annual safety inspections.
  • Signs of Functional Changes/Loss: Reduced spring effect (e.g., decreased forefoot resistance, changed rollover behavior) or delamination of the spring indicate functional loss. Play in the ankle joint, oil leakage, and unusual noises may also signal a loss of functionality.
