Overview

The Panasonic RQ-S25 is a mini cassette stereo player designed for portable audio enjoyment, featuring a compact form factor and a range of functionalities for convenient use and maintenance. This device is equipped with a Dolby noise reduction system, enhancing audio quality by minimizing unwanted background noise during playback. The player supports various tape types, including normal, CrO2, and metal, thanks to its auto tape select function, which automatically adjusts settings for optimal performance based on the inserted cassette.

For user interaction, the RQ-S25 includes an open lever to access the cassette compartment, a headphones jack for private listening, and a volume control for adjusting audio levels. The device also features a reverse mode selector, allowing users to switch playback direction, and a stop button for halting tape operation. A "Hold" switch is integrated to prevent unintended operations, disabling front panel buttons when activated. Playback direction can be controlled via a dedicated button, and fast forward and rewind functions are available for quick navigation through tape content. An operation/battery check indicator provides visual feedback on the device's status and battery level. For enhanced sound, an S-XBS/amenity sound control selector is included. The player also features a connection part for a battery case and a rechargeable battery compartment cover.

The remote control, integrated into the stereo earphones, offers additional convenience. A single button on the remote allows for various operations depending on the number of presses, with confirmation beeps indicating successful commands. The remote also includes a "Hold" switch to prevent accidental button presses. A slider on the remote helps manage the earphone cord, preventing tangles.

Powering the RQ-S25 is flexible, supporting either a rechargeable battery (included) or a dry cell battery (not included). The rechargeable battery provides approximately 3.8 hours of tape playback after a 2-hour charge. The device indicates when the battery is weak by dimming or turning off the OPR/BATT indicator, prompting the user to recharge or replace the battery. The rechargeable battery can be recharged about 300 times before its operation time shortens, signaling the need for replacement. To extend playback time, both rechargeable and dry cell batteries can be installed simultaneously.

Maintenance of the RQ-S25 is designed to be straightforward, with clear procedures for replacing key components. The mechanism block, which includes the head block, motor, and belt, is supplied as a semi-assembly. When replacing the mechanism block, users are instructed to transfer the head block, motor, and belt from the old mechanism to the new one. The head block and pinch roller are supplied together, though the pinch roller can also be supplied separately. If replacing the head block, the holder from the old block must be transferred to the new one. The motor and belt can also be replaced following specific disassembly steps.

Disassembly instructions are provided in detail, covering the removal of the cabinet assembly, main P.C.B., side cabinet, leaf switch, cam lock assembly, link unit, intermediate cabinet, and various knobs and buttons. These instructions emphasize careful handling and proper reassembly. For checking operations during disassembly and servicing, the manual outlines steps to connect the PCB and motor with an extension cord, short-circuit specific lands for power supply and microcomputer reset, and manually operate the plunger arm to check PLAY/STOP functions. Notes are included to ensure proper assembly, such as aligning the intermediate cabinet's rib with the link unit's hole and ensuring switch bosses fit correctly into the knobs.

The manual also addresses the replacement of the mechanism sheet, which may be necessary if a user complains about the sheet being different after a repair using a shared mechanism block. In such cases, the original mechanism sheet can be attached over the existing one, ensuring proper positioning. This comprehensive approach to usage, power management, and maintenance ensures the Panasonic RQ-S25 remains a reliable and user-friendly stereo cassette player.
